Arming Teachers

Awesome!

A group of teachers in a Florida suburb are receiving free weapons training classes for free

First up, I want to know what School of Journalism School the reporter went to who wrote that line, as well as the editor who let that get published. Still this is a great thing. Even with the federal law about guns in schools still in effect, this is the best way to raise awareness of the problems. Ignorance is the biggest problem, and many teachers, staff and administrators in schools are ignorant on guns and security, and through that ignorance, support the idea that somehow a sign on the side of the school might prevent violence.

“I’ve been kind of skirting around the issue of getting a gun again and this opportunity came open,” Oak Grove (Clearwater) Middle School teacher Terri Cunningham told FOX13 News. “I decided it’s free; don’t turn down anything that’s free.”

The class, which normally costs $75, was offered with a discount because of the apparent growing interest in concealed carry permits among teachers in the wake of the Newtown shooting.

Lenny Bogdanos, who works for International Executive Protection, told FOX13 News that ,”if you’re educated and trained properly then you’re going to understand how the weapon works, you’re not going to be afraid of it and you’re going to control the weapon instead of the weapon controlling you.”

I couldn’t say it better!

Also good to see in the picture the trainers are using suppressors in the class. This is another stupid gun law that needs to be struck down. Suppressors are awesome training tools, and hardly deserve the vilification they’ve received in this country.

IIRC there is a provision in the .fed GFSZA that holders of a CCW/CPL/CHL/whateveryourstatecallsit issued by the same state in which the school is located*** are exempt from the GFSZA, eving only state level prohibitions in place.

If a a state wants armed teachers/staff, all they have to do is pass a law with the same provision…let those with CCW carry in schools.

***Out of state permits recognized through reciprocity DO NOT meet this qualification.

From my CCW class I was told that you cannot carry a gun concealed or unconcealed onto school grounds, you may keep it in your locked car in the parking lot and that’s it. Maybe the laws are different in Florida but here we can’t so it would be pointless for teachers to have a CCW for the specific reason of taking it to work. I wish they would change that law.

I made the remark to someone and they retorted that a teacher might get pissed at a student and use it against the student. There are reports of teacher abuse through out history. My rebuttal was the stringent background check done on those who do obtain a CCW, it’s more thorough than those who buy a gun so any teacher carry a CCW would more than likely not be a candidate for using a gun against a student in a moment of anger.
