More “Safety” At Gun Free Zones

School held responsible for security lapses.

The families of three college-bound friends murdered in a Newark schoolyard in 2007 have reached a $5 million settlement with the city schools and state.

The settlement was announced Tuesday, several weeks into a civil trial.

The state attorney general’s office says the Department of Education is responsible for $3 million and the Newark school district is liable for $2 million. The state has oversight of the Newark schools….The families claimed the school district was negligent for leaving gates to the Mount Vernon School open at night when the schoolyard was a known gang hangout.

“Known Gang Hangout”? God, why would Gangs hang out in a “Gun Free Zone”? Its almost like those signs ATTRACT danger, rather than scaring it away!

I remember this case, I was still living in Jersey City at the time, it was tragic.

I fail to see how the school district should be held responsible for the fact that some good kids chose to hang out in the schoolyard at night, or for the fact that some bad kids chose to kill them. Had the gates been locked, are we supposed to believe that the kids wouldn’t find somewhere else to hang out, or that the other kids would not be walking around victimizing people?

Amazingly enough, no “assault weapons” were used in the murders—just a revolver, a steak knife and a machete. Is it even possible to kill someone without an AK-15 Assault Clip?

I wonder why “the Six men and boys charged with the murders are serving prison terms” weren’t held responsible in the lawsuit.

Could it be that the “it’s not about the money” claim is fallacious?
