“Gun Death” Washing Machine

Another thing that almost every home has…even if you live in a tiny apartment, there are probably a few coin-op machines in the basement. I guess I did have one apartment that had neither a washing machine in the unit, or a coin op in a common space. Otherwise all my dorms had coin-op, all but the one apartment had in-unit laundry, and my house actually came with a washer and dryer (that we disposed of, and replaced with a GOOD unit).

Yet you don’t see EVERY damn house have stories like this:

A Garland, Texas, man is charged with capital murder after his 4-year-old son was found dead inside a home Tuesday afternoon.

…When officers arrived to the home in the 2400 block of Newcastle Drive, they said the child was deceased. And investigators believe at some point the boy had been injured inside the home’s front-loading washing machine.

Now I found a follow up story:

A Texas dad, who was jailed after his 4-year-old’s washing machine death, walked free on Friday as cops vowed to keep investigating.

Garland police dropped capital murder charges against 28-year-old **REDACTED**, saying they have more work to do.

… “That door has to be shut and then someone has to push a button on the outside to get that started,” Harn told Fox 4 on Wednesday. “It does not start by automatically shutting that door.”

Investigators were still waiting an official cause of death, but Koda’s injuries match the inside of the washing machine, police said.

So charges have been dropped….still I don’t get it. I have a front-loader (they’re awesome) and occasionally (often because I’ve over-loaded the unit) where the door becomes unlatched during the cycle. When the latch triggers, the machine goes into alarm, and stops the current cycle. For me to have clean laundry I need to push the door shut to re-latch it, and hit the start button to resume the wash.

Not enough info….did son hide in wet laundry to surprise Dad? Even a big industrial unit is a bit of a squeeze for a 4-year-old, it gets tighter and more unpleasant with wet clothes. That COULD explain why dad might latch the door and hit the button to kill the boy…but I’m not buying it.

Either way, the antis focus on “Gun Death” because they are claiming that guns CAUSE death. Either the gun emboldens or outright drives somebody to violence, or they are just so dangerous that just having them around invites death.

Of course these days so very many houses have guns, yet are never stained with “Gun Death”, tragic or otherwise. Same with most houses having washing machines, and yet killings of this kind are EXTREMELY rare.

    That is just flat strange…

Yech front loading washers. I like a simple, powerful machine that can be precisely controlled: a top loader.
