Found this clip yesterday. I played Tuba from middle school to college (unlike Tom, I started on the Trombone because my uncle had an old one in my Grandmother’s attic I had discovered the year prior to band sign-up, and I thought that was a good a choice as any…but I lacked the dexterity to work the slide with any grace, and my band directer both needed tuba players and needed to stop hearing me butcher trombone parts and talked me into it) Funny that despite a generation between my band career and Tom’s how close the jokes are!

Trombone’s a tricky one, I’ll agree there. It’s beautiful when someone can play it well, but it’s like finding someone who can play the accordion well: it takes a LOT of time, a LOT of practice, and probably no small amount of “natural ability.”
Same would go for double reed instruments. A good Oboe or Bassoon solo in a symphony is really an amazing thing….but hearing the new student in the band room trying to learn one could be likened to listening to somebody strangling a duck or goose respectively!
