Wow, you may remember this post where I spoke out against birdshot in shotguns. I’m still not a huge fan of the idea, but he makes a compelling point:
Kinda hard to argue with that. Also if you’re using birdshot, I’m sure you’re not using an H&R single-shot, but a modern repeater of some sort, and what’s worth shooting once is worth shooting twice!
Oh and he was talking about #4 shot. Here’s a video of somebody we can all respect.
All interesting.
Since I did a penetration test I’ve been carrying steel T and BB in my 870. Haven’t yet had to use it for real but I’m convinced it’ll do just fine.
I have a friend that was shot in the back at about 25 feet with birdshot from a 12 gauge. He was in a convenience store when it was robbed. He slept in his own bed that night. I know that there are outliers to any data, but that one sticks with me. When I have a shotgun loaded for self defense, it’s loaded with buckshot.
Another interesting data point.
I’m not really a shotgun guy. If a pistol won’t do, I’m going for a rifle.
But if my 590 needs to be loaded up for reals, its 9-pellet #00 for me too.
I think you confused #4 shot with #4 buck.
Both Mass and Jeff were discussing #4 Buck, that is correct.

I do love the buck and ball combo load. That’s what cavalry soldiers used in the Civil War. But that bird shot will leave a solid bruise on someone’s intention to cause harm.
Of course, in my home, the invader will have a choice of many different types of firearms to be shot with. Ain’t choice grand?
