NRA News: UN Arms Treaty is Dead

Doesn’t mean it won’t pop up again, but it appears we won’t be coming around right now.

Now there’s talk of the “Next Administration”, which is foolish as I can see Romney standing behind this tripe just as much as Obama did, and claiming its some sort of “Good Foreign Policy” before he dives into his boilerplate lie about “respecting the Second Amendment”.

Still Congress is loaded with pro-gun members, and America is a pro-gun country, you can’t change the CULTURE that quickly.

We need to be vigilant, of course, but I think much of the discussion of this garbage UN action has been fear mongering.

  1. Jack says:

A lack of the treaty know does remove it’s use as a fig-leaf to justify executive fiat gun control. Which is good.

Yes vigilance is required. Just look at the UK. They used to have a very vibrant and entrepreneurial gun culture. However, they have had a long taboo against carry. Even to medieval times people were required to own certain arms for the common defense, but they were bared from carrying them within downs, again for common defense.

Canada is right now in the death struggles of “Sporting and Hunting purpose”. Their only carry is as rare as a Hawaiian toter’s permit, have “sensible magazine restrictions”, have a maximum barrel size on handguns, will ban guns outright for just looking like an AK47 (even if 22lr), and arguably the worst have such an oppressive “save storage” law that defense in the home is all but impossible.

And if you do manage to defend yourself, the State will prosecute you.

They did get rid of the long gun registry. So there’s that, but without having self defense valid reason to own a gun they’re facing an uphill battle as hobbyists with a potentially dangerous interest in a shirking pool.

That’s one thing we’ve got going for us in the US. 41 states are Shall Issue. And permits are up, even in the May Issue states. Maryland might go over depending on the court battle. And there is pressure on Illinois and even Massachusetts. Hell we got Wisconsin.

While Self Defense isn’t what the 2nd is about. Washington didn’t cross the Delaware to avoid being robbed by Sumdood. It makes a far stronger argument for gun ownership than hunting.

You can see this even infecting the lies the antis have to say. Like “Oh we’re not after your .38 or your 9mm”. Where before they’d be open about handguns and tell you that your deer rifle is safe.

  2. My guess is that the language didn’t go */far enough/* to oppress personal arms. The USA, Russia and China all objected/requested more time. For many in the world, it isn’t small arms they’re concerned with, but “weapons of war” – machine guns, grenade launchers, artillery, tanks and similar – all sold by those 3. Many already control small arms internally to their satisfaction, and don’t care what we do to ourselves.
