The Antis and Their Own

Of course we all know from the various court cases ruling DC’s Ban on Carry and gun ownership, that the government of the District is deeply anti-gun.

So when proceedings were done to charge David Gregory with illegal possession of a “High Capacity” Magazine within the District of Columbia, they axed it!

It was an open-and-shut case. Gregory showed the 30 Round STANAG magazine on national TV in High Definition, the police also took possession of the very magazine Gregory held up, and they have records of the producers of the show contacting the ATF asking about if it would be legal or not, and were told not to do it.

If Gregory was to be arranged on this crime, I see no other move but for him to plead No Contest to the charges. They had him dead-to-rights.

This is why the antis hate when pro-gun people say “Enforce the laws we have, don’t write new laws!” Because they’ll only enforce them if they don’t like you.

I Say Good Move

Bushmaster Moves the political stunt Newtown lawsuit to Federal Court.

Gun maker Remington has moved a lawsuit by families of those shot in the Sandy Hook school massacre from state to federal court, where at least one expert says it has less chance of succeeding.

Nine families sued Remington and others in Bridgeport Superior Court in December arguing the Bushmaster AR-15 rifle used in the shooting should not have been sold for civilian use because of its overwhelming firepower. A 10th family joined the lawsuit adding a wrongful death claim.

The case was placed before U.S. District Judge Robert Chatigny last week after Remington argued that since it is located in North Carolina and not Connecticut, federal court was a more proper jurisdiction.

Timothy Lytton, a professor at the Albany Law School who has written extensively about suing the gun industry, said getting the case into the 2nd U.S. Circuit, of which Connecticut is a part, is a victory for the defendants.

“The 2nd Circuit has previously refused to hold gun manufacturers liable or permit lawsuits against gun manufacturers for injuries caused by third parties,” he said. “It has a history of knocking these types of cases down.”

A 2005 federal law shields gun manufacturers from most lawsuits over criminal use of their products, but it does include an exception for cases where companies should know a weapon is likely to be used in a way that risks injury to others.

Experts have been saying that this case stands no chance, I suspect this move makes chances of dismissal or a win for Bushmaster higher IMHO.

“Gun Death” Elephant

One thing implied by anti-gunners is that guns are inherently dangerous. That could be said for say older black powder guns, especially in the days when they were used in conjunction with fireplaces and candlelight, or early cartridge guns where the idea of a drop safety had not yet come into the mix. Still modern guns simply don’t “Just Go Off”, and like many other things that carry a certain degree of risk, like power tools, kitchen knives, and automobiles, they are inherently SAFE if properly handled.

Some things do “Just Go off”:

A veterinarian and co-founder of Hope Elephants, which cares for retired circus elephants, was killed when one of the animals stepped on him, police said in ruling his death an accident.

Knox county sheriff’s office deputies said they found James Laurita, 56, unresponsive in the barn at the foundation in Hope, about 87 miles (140km) north-east of Portland in Maine.

Laurita appeared to have fallen before one of the foundation’s two elephants apparently stepped on him, police said, citing a medical examiner’s report.

Elephants are VERY dangerous. That really goes double when you think of this:

“The elephant was not aggressive in any way. It was clearly an accident,” said Mark Belserene, administrator for the state medical examiner’s office, who added that the official cause of death was “asphyxiation and multiple fractures caused by compression of the chest”.

I remember reading a study on Great White sharks, and it was discovered that it was very plausible that many of the killings by sharks weren’t actually true “Attacks”. When a large animal like a shark or an elephant attacks the trauma is SEVERE, and when it is on something considerably smaller than them like a person or a prey species (in the case of sharks, as elephants are herbivores) the attack is almost instantly fatal. Most shark attack victims don’t die from a powerful attack, but tend to bleed out from a missing limb or massive bleeding. The study showed that great white sharks were naturally inquisitive to strange objects in the water, and rather than the powerful strikes they might do on seals or large fish, for strange objects, they tended to do less powerful exploratory bites just to see what the object is.

Now that has little difference for the person being “explored” or accidentally stepped on as the damage will still often be worse than you can survive from, but it really does show an inherent danger.

And all are not a “Gun Death”.

Neat Drink Discovery

So for reasons I won’t explain I acquired a bottle of Amaretto.

Also at the same time I’ve been experimenting with cocktails that use simple syrup as an ingredient.

Simple Syrup just seems vulgar to me in a drink. It’s really just refined sugar water, it only adds sweetness to the drink, and no deeper flavor. So I’ve been substituting mild liqueurs for the syrup to add both sweetness and flavor. One common one I’ve been turning to is Triple Sec in drinks that use citrus juice or elements for added flavor. It works REALLY well, especially in the classic Daiquiri.

So to use up this Amaretto, which frankly isn’t something I’m particularly interested in, I’ve been swapping it with the triple sec in a few recipes. Most haven’t created an noticeable change, but this one is a known winner.

Start with the classic Gimlet. My own variation is 2 parts gin, a half-part triple sec, and the juice of half a lime. I also add a few dashes of orange bitters, shaken and served either straight up, or on the rocks. It’s quite nice.

Recently I’ve decided to omit the bitters, and instead use the more bitter Amaretto instead of the triple sec….and by George, it’s REALLY good.

Since the drink is so different in both flavor and color from the base cocktail, and because I don’t take myself very seriously, I think I’ll call this one the Am-let (say it like Omelet).

Give it a try!

“Gun Death” Mixed Bag

Here’s an interesting one, if you can get past the wanton brutality of it:

An elderly couple severely beaten in their Kansas City home, allegedly by a man also accused of fatally shooting three of their neighbors, died Tuesday after being taken off life support, relatives and hospital officials said.

**VICTIMS** were attacked in their basement on Sept. 2. Prosecutors allege that **REDACTED** beat the couple, then fatally shot three other people outside nearby homes before fleeing in the **VICTIMS** SUV. **REDACTED**, a convicted felon, was arrested hours later when police found him walking with a loaded shotgun in his pants.

Now I haven’t seen the antis talk about this story, but I don’t see why not, we have a man convicted of a violent felony, and a person of interest in an unsolved double-murder with a gun, and he shot 3 people…but also I can see why not because he beat two other people to death. Indeed it would have taken a lot more work to get this body count without the gun, but that’s using the methods he chose. We’ve certainly seen killing like this in a “Gun Death” files before.

What do you think?

NFA, Just Go Away!

Yep

The only thing with any shred of rationality in the NFA is Full-auto guns. I mean a full-auto gun behaves totally different than an semi-auto gun…of course the Non-NFA bumpfire stocks further blur these lines too.

Still the bottom line was the NFA initially was going to include handguns, so because of this non-handguns needed to be defined, which leads to the definition of Short Barred Shotguns an Rifles.

Of course in a modern world where you can’t put a 8″ .22 Barrel on your Thompson Center Encore rifle without registering and paying tax to the .gov, but you can go over to your buddy’s house and give him some cash for his Desert Eagle, or S&W .500 magnum that he doesn’t want anymore with no government involvement, it really is just a stupid law, and should be dissolved!

Surprise! “Gun Free Zones” need More guns!

In Europe:

One was a young policewoman, unarmed on the outskirts of Paris and felled by an assault rifle. Her partner, also without weapons, could do nothing to stop the gunman. Another was a first responder with a side arm, rushing to the Charlie Hebdo offices where a pair of masked men with high-powered weapons had opened fire on an editorial meeting. Among their primary targets: the armed police bodyguard inside the room.

With the deaths of the three French officers during three days of terror in the Paris region and the suggestion of a plot in Belgium to kill police, European law enforcement agencies are rethinking how – and how many – police should be armed.

Scotland Yard said Sunday it was increasing the deployment of officers allowed to carry firearms in Britain, where many cling to the image of the unarmed “bobby.” In Belgium, where officials say a terror network was plotting to attack police, officers are again permitted to take their service weapons home.

Shame the average person can’t do the same. Also a fun fact to throw into the face of smug Euros who say “Our Police don’t even NEEEEED guns!!” Yeah, they do!

Not just Europe either!

Nearly all campus police officers at public universities now carry guns, pepper spray and other weapons, according to a new Justice Department report, and experts say more private schools are looking to arm police.

Overall, about two-thirds of public and private campuses used armed officers during the 2011-12 school year, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics survey of 900 four-year colleges with at least 2,500 students. Officers at public universities were more than twice as likely as those at private schools to carry guns.

Despite the increase, schools aren’t required to report weapon use to federal authorities.

Experts said campus administrators are increasingly pressed for assurances that officers are well-equipped and well-trained following high-profile crimes like the 2007 Virginia Tech shootings and the Penn State child sex abuse case.

“Compared to 10 years ago, we’ve made drastic improvements to become more professional, more accountable and more responsive to the expectation of our campus community,” said Florida State University Police Chief David Perry, who serves as president of the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators.

“Parents are asking up front … do you have weapons, can you respond to an active shooter if there was a situation on your campus?” he said.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics last surveyed campus law enforcement agencies in 2004-05. On the more than 700 campuses questioned for both reports, the percentage of agencies arming their officers rose from 68 percent to 75 percent. About 32,000 people were working full-time for campus law enforcement at four-year institutions in 2011-12, the most recent statistics available.

Of course the campii with ZERO active shooter problems are ones that don’t expel students for carrying guns that would otherwise be legal across the street from the School.

More guns, Less Crime!

Can We Quit This “War On Drugs” Crap?

Straight up War!

The U.S. Border Patrol made the rare move of firing warning shots from a helicopter to stop a boat believed to be smuggling drugs off the San Diego coast.

The Border Patrol said in a statement Sunday that a Blackhawk helicopter and two of its boats were chasing down the panga boat Saturday night after it was spotted by the Coast Guard and men were seen dumping what appeared to be bales of marijuana overboard.

When the boat refused to yield, several shots were fired across its bow by the mounted guns on the Blackhawk. The three men aboard immediately stopped and the men were taken into custody.

So yeah, the “War on Drugs” has close air support from armed Blackhawks! For a boat filled with WEED! Not that I see much of a difference if it was filled with Coke or Heroine. Still when it comes to a plant that even the more minor pot smoker has grown in their own home, this is just CRAZY stupid!

Can we just legalize this crap and set the prisoners free?

“Gun Death” Local Stabbing

Here in Massachusetts:

An overnight murder in Weymouth and the subsequent fatal shooting of an armed man by police is under investigation by cops and Norfolk District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey’s office, according to authorities.

…“While the investigation is in its beginning stages, initial information is that when officers arrived they found a white male in an agitated state, apparently armed with one or more knives,” Norfolk DA spokesman David Traub said in a statement. “As the confrontation outside the residence unfolded, both officers apparently made the simultaneous decision that the use of force was necessary and both discharged their weapons. The male was struck and incapacitated.”

He was transported the male to South Shore Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The body of a white woman was found on the steps leading to the home.

“While the cause and manner of death will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, there was evidence of stabbing injury,” Traub said.

Man stabbed a woman to death, then started to go after responding officers. Not all the details are known about this case yet, but the “Gun Death” in this story can be argued SAVED lives, while the non “Gun Death” was likely a murder.

So why do the antis focus so hard on “Gun Death”?
