Good Video For Novices

“Double Action” and “Single Action” can be pretty confusing terms for new shooters. My Wife got confused with the terms for AGES simply because she’s not a gun geek, she’s a shooter. For her cocking the hammer, the firing a revolver was “two actions” leading her to confuse the single-action shot with a “double action”, and she could give a damn about HOW the gun manages to shoot.

“Single Action” and “Double Action” is really just talking about the actions done by the TRIGGER.

And there is a SEA of other actions in between, which really gets geeky, like the fully-charged striker of some Walthers or the Springfield XD, the partially charged striker of M&Ps Glocks, Kahrs and many others. The partially charged hammer like on a Ruger LCR or a SIG DAK trigger.

And I’m sure I’m missing a ton. That being said, while I am amused by the mechanical workings of a gun, when it comes to actually SHOOTING things, I really just judge on feel. Does it feel like a long pull with a bit of tension on it? Does it feel like a short crisp pull? I’ll often simplify those pulls to simply “Double Action” or “Single Action” when maybe that isn’t 100% true.

Buy Local Seafood

Not only is it fresher, but its SAFER!

Korean shellfish shipped to the United States may have been exposed to human feces and potentially contaminated with norovirus, the Food and Drug Administration warned distributors, retailers and other food service operators Thursday.

After evaluating Korea’s shellfish sanitation program, the FDA said it found significant deficiencies, including inadequate sanitary controls, ineffective management of land-based pollution sources and the presence of norovirus in shellfish growing areas.

The agency said all fresh, frozen, canned and processed oysters, clams, mussels and whole and roe-on scallops – known as molluscan shellfish – that entered the country from Korea should not be sold.

Nasty! The EPA is one of those bloated federal agencies, but that doesn’t mean all their work is self-serving crap. Because of them, we don’t have to deal with this shit (literally) when we sup into some local Scallops!

Be safe out there! (also as a general rule you should stay away from those canned oysters and mussels…they’re just NASTY!)

Fat People Are Dumb!

Mrs. Weer’d brings us our daily dose of junk science:

Childhood obesity affects math performance in school, along with child’s social skills and well being, according to a new study published in the journal Child Development….Kids who were obese throughout the study period performed worse on math tests in the first through fifth grades than children who were not obese.

GRANT FISHING!!! Let’s look a little more:

In addition to the math performance findings, obese children reportedly felt sadder, lonelier and more anxious than kids of healthier weights. Researchers said this emotional well being also could contribute to their poorer performances in math….While weight may indeed contribute to poor school performance, there are likely several confounding factors that also contribute to an obese child’s overall well-being, experts said.

“Obesity does not prevent kids from doing math, but obesity develops in families where there may be less oversight, less education, fewer resources,” said Dr. David Katz, director of the Yale Prevention Center.

Correlation does NOT mean causation. Really we’re not talking about fat kids at all, we’re talking about a family that fosters fat kids, and social stigma that teases the fat kid. Hey, but when our “Progressive” dictators are pushing to ban foods and drinks “for our own good”, they’re looking for as many crappy studies that will frame the debate EXACTLY how they want it, and are willing to pay for it.

“Gun Death” Thunderdome

Wow, this is quite the crazy story.

A neighbourhood dispute over loud music and erratic driving has escalated into a bloody brawl in which a chainsaw partially severed a man’s arm…Another man, Troy Thornton, 26, lost a finger in the dispute. His sister, Nicole Thornton, claimed he was attacked with a samurai sword.

Mr Thornton, a father of two, lives in Queensland but was in Sydney to attend the funeral of his sister’s partner, Peter Reinhardt, who drowned when his boat overturned on the Nepean River in March.

As Ms Thornton kept a waterside vigil with her newborn baby, the couple’s Londonderry home was robbed. Thieves took jewellery, cash and a gun…The Thorntons claim that someone from the Jorgensen household then drove in a dangerous and threatening manner towards them.

Police were called and the two families were told to return to their homes.

But tensions escalated again just before 9.20pm, resulting in the chainsaw being produced.

Ms Thornton claimed members of the Jorgensen household tried to invade their family’s home.

“Basically we ended up all in a brawl,” she said. “The guys from next door. By then there was 20 of them with bats, swords and poles.

“It was me, my mum and my sister taking on guys, so my brother has gone and got the chainsaw.”

So a stolen gun, from a country that mandates “Safe Storage”, a funeral from a boating accident, a dangerous driver, and then bats, swords, and a chainsaw.

And this is Australia! You know what else is in Australia?

Hey, but no “Gun Death”, so the laws WORKED!

What Gun To Carry?

There are ALL sorts of smaller points, like cost, weight, size (both overall, and in what dimensions, such as double-stack vs. Single-Stack, and Size of the grip vs. barrel length)

And of course personal preference, like Revolver vs. Semi-auto, or Glock Vs. M&P.

But I think the big point is how much gun are you willing to lug around ALL THE TIME, and start from there, because a carry gun ain’t shit if you don’t carry it.

So Much for a “Free Pass”

We talked about it here. Now they have a conviction.

A retired Houston-area firefighter faces up to life in prison after a jury convicted him of murder for gunning down his unarmed neighbor during a dispute over a noisy house party.

Raul Rodriguez, 47, argued he was within his rights under Texas’ version of a stand-your-ground law when he killed Kelly Danaher in 2010. The trial’s punishment phase, which will include further testimony, was scheduled to begin Thursday.

From JUST the information in the video, it looked like a STUPID, but a clean shoot. (Just from the video, when the drunks got belligerent, it would have been a good move to head home and lock the door, and only engage if directly attacked)

But I made a speculation about this:

Johnson said Rodriguez lured and provoked Danaher and two other men to come out onto the street and threatened them by brandishing his gun. Rodriguez did have a concealed handgun license. She said Danaher and the two other men were unarmed and that Rodriguez’s life was never in any danger. Danaher’s widow had told jurors her husband was not a confrontational person.

Now I can’t agree with the last part. Again the drunks were openly breaking the law, threatening, and DID assault Rodriguez. The only thing on trial was Rodriguez shooting Danaher. From the video Rodriguez is acting calm, and apparently standing in the road. The thing that unsettled me was all that talk of Rodriguez’s gun by the other men. Rodriguez never mentions it in the video, but one of the drunks states that he’s going to get a shotgun because Rodriguez “Flashed a gun”, and Mr. Danaher is asking Rodriguez if there is a gun in his pocket shortly before being shot.

That’s a pretty big red flag right there. Texas isn’t an open carry state, so legally the drunks shouldn’t know if Rodriguez had a gun or not…unless he was brandishing it for effect, which is a crime.

This was an ugly case, and I think I’ll stand with the Jury on this one.

BTW the media was quick to call the Martin/Zimmerman case “motivated by race”, and even throwing around the odd modifier “White Hispanic” when it turned out Zimmerman’s pedigree is Jew/Hispanic/Black mix. Obviously if there is ANY consistency with the media race MUST be a factor when we’re talking Rodriguez/Danaher, right?

And again, so much for a “Free Pass” or “License to Murder”. And it must be noted that Texas has some of the most liberal deadly force laws in the country, and still this guy is looking at life in prison!

Trouble in Anti-Gun Paradise

Mrs. Weer’d was late for dinner because he bus was stuck in traffic. She sent me the story.

A car chase that started on the Tobin Bridge this afternoon ended in Kendall Square after a state trooper fired at the alleged suspect, who drove away only to crash his car on the other side of the Longfellow, got out of the car, boarded the Red Line at Charles/MGH and then was pulled off the train at Kendall by waiting state troopers….State Police say the incident began when a trooper on the Tobin Bridge attempted to stop a car wanted as part of a gun investigation….Preliminary investigation indicates that the shots fired were discharged on Broadway in Cambridge by a trooper in self-defense after the suspect put the trooper in fear for his safety. The shots were fired at the vehicle.

I got held-up in Boston in a similar event. My case turned out it was one gang banger shot another, and then fled into the subway. I happened to be sitting on a bench reading the paper, when suddenly I saw TONS of officers, several with MP5s. I’d only had my carry permit for about a month, and this was one of the first time I was carrying my 1911 in an all-day outing, rather than just my J-Frame. I started to flop-sweat thinking I was printing, and somebody called the cops, and I was about to be proned out.

They caught the guy in another tunnel, and my train left the station without incident, besides being about 20mins late.

Mrs. Weer’d ended up equally fine. 20 mins late, but fine.

Still, Massachusetts is lousy for gun owners. Mandatory licensing, mandatory training, full registration, and no private sales. Cambridge and Boston have further restrictions that are even WORSE, such as added (illegal) fees, added (illegal) training, a habit for letting the mandatory minimum processing time lapse, often several times over .

Yet we still have this crap. Of course Boston has a lot of GANGS…but that couldn’t be an issue, could it?

“Gun Death” Public Healthcare

It kills!

A father whose baby son died after being born in a hospital waiting room has told Sky News he believes his son might have survived if he had been given better care.

Steven Yorke and his partner Sara Proud went to Leicester Royal Infirmary on Sunday night when Sara realised she was in labour.

When they arrived they were told to wait in a side room with other expectant parents.

But 80 minutes later baby Kyle was born while Mr Yorke was trying to find help.

When two midwives did come to assist, the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby’s neck.

Kyle was quickly delivered and rushed off in the hope of being revived, but those attempts were unsuccessful.

I’d say he has a case. The cord wrapped around the neck is a fairly common birth complication and the pros are trained to look for it, but a layperson has their hands full just dealing with the situation where they are IN a HOSPITAL but nobody will help!

Scary, and we’ve seen it before!

Hey, but like gun control (which doesn’t stop bad people from getting guns and leads to more “Gun Death”) “Progressives” want more public healthcare. So this death is best ignored, as it is an inconvenient truth.
