Commentary: Guns for self-defense mean more costs, not more benefits
Odd, I own and carry guns because I have a firm and researched belief that guns do more good than harm. OK you’ve piqued my interest…
FBI statistics for 2010 indicate that for every justifiable homicide by a private citizen using a firearm there were approximately 50 criminal homicides with a firearm. When suicides by firearm and fatal gun accidents are considered, there were about 115 deaths through the misuse of a firearm for every justifiable homicide in which a private citizen shot and killed another in self-defense.
Hmmm, so now we’re comparing murder to justifiable homicide. Is that relevant? If I draw a gun on a mugger and they run away, or a rapist is shot by an intended victim and is rushed to the hospital and survives, is that a bad thing?
Yeah, we talk “Stopping Power” not “Killing Power”. Of course we’ve seen the REAL numbers, and guns are USED in self defense around 100,000 times per year (documented criminal reports, and likely a low number) and estimated as high as two million, which because of methodology I suspect that’s a bit high. So anybody rational can figure that the number is somewhere in between. (citation)
But wait, we have the death knell!
Many studies have shown that guns kept in the home are far more likely to be used against family members or involved in suicides or accidents than actions against intruders. In one study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, Drs. Arthur L. Kellermann and Donald T. Reay found that for every self-defense homicide involving a firearm kept in the home, there were 43 suicides, criminal homicides or fatal accidents of residents.
Another study by Dr. Kellermann and his colleagues found that guns kept in the home were four times as likely to be involved in accidents, seven times as likely to be involved in criminal assaults or homicides and 11 times as likely to be involved in attempted or completed suicides than to be used to injure or kill in self-defense.
If by “Many Studies” you mean, just that one Kellermann study, and Kellermann won’t even stand up for his poor work. They’re so desperate for a study that shows numbers the way they want them, that they keep dredging up this horrible piece Joyce-funded ethics violations.
Kellermann is synonymous with “Junk Science”, but is still cited daily by people looking to mislead, even 17 years after it was first discredited, and never repeated.
Oh and just for giggles:
National surveys conducted by the Injury Control Research Center and the National Opinion Research Center show that Americans, by a wide margin, feel less safe when they believe that more people in their community are acquiring or carrying guns.
Never read this survey, but when shown this image most people will FEEL that the right line is longer. Doesn’t matter how well or poorly this study was doing, the end result is garbage…oh and so is this article.
We all joke about the Anti-Rights “Blood In the Streets” and “High Noon at the OK Corral” predictions…but yet they still exist. My Dad said to me the other day: “You know they’re making open carry without permits legal in Oklahoma?”
My answer: “You mean like its been in Maine since forever?” Oops, Nothing scary there!
“OH NO You can carry a gun in Arizona Without a Permit!” And the problem is? Yeah. “YOU CAN CARRY IN BARS IN VIRGINIA!!!!”, yep, and I did several times while I was down there on vacation! BIG FRIGGIN’ DEAL!
AMPA, Florida (AP) – The thousands of protesters expected at the Democratic and Republican national conventions can come armed with a lot more than signs and slogans: State law in Florida and North Carolina allows concealed weapons, including guns.
In Tampa, where the Republicans will hold their festivities this fall, officials are starting to worry about people toting guns in such a politically charged environment. The City Council voted Thursday to ask Republican Gov. Rick Scott to help them temporarily ban concealed weapons. Charlotte officials have yet to publically voice concern, but with both cities trying to balance public safety with First and Second Amendment rights, it’s likely the host city for the Democratic convention will also have to address the issue.
The Tampa City Council wants Scott to issue an executive order, preventing people with concealed weapons permits from carrying guns….Charlotte officials also believe they are hamstrung.
“We can’t change what the state legislature has in place,” said Mark Newbold, an attorney with the police department.
Sorry, you can’t do it, its illegal. Oh and you know what else is illegal? committing crimes with guns!
Let’s look at the most recent “Political attack”, the Tuscon Mall Shooting. Loughner had a clean background, but that was only because the bleeding heart “Progressive” Sheriff kept refusing to charge him with the countless felonies he committed under his watch. We talked about it before, “Progressives” care more about criminals than they do about good people, and because this criminal was coddled, and coddled until he killed and maimed a bunch of good people. That’s where the system’s priorities were.
Do you think if he had a felony conviction that would preclude him from buying guns at gun shops, and carrying or owning guns legal…you don’t think a drug addict who had all sorts of felonious contraband in his possession at the time of the murders couldn’t get his mitts on a black-market gun? Sorry, but the dude had LSD and Mushrooms in his home which are 100% illegal in this country without some crazy federal licenses for scientific testing (a Coworker of mine used to give LSD to Mice as part of her job! How cool?), but its legal to buy a handgun in every state in the union, and just a crime to give or sell it to the wrong people.
Of course that’s talking worst case scenario, which is bullshit anyway. Presidential candidates and presidents travel through gun-friendly places all the time. Guess what happens? NOTHING.
Actually when Hillary Clinton was running for President in 2008, my truck was first-in-line to be stopped so that former President Bill Clinton’s limousine could depart Harvard college after a speech. I was carrying a 1911, and he had the rear window rolled down and I got a clear look at his face through the open window.
Don’t much care for the man, but he’s out of power, so really I could care less.
So yeah, lots of nothing is going to happen.
Oh and a further note for why I call them “Anti-Freedom”:
Tampa is proposing a “Clean Zone” protest area with portable toilets, water, a stage and a microphone for protesters. Outside that area, people will be allowed to march down an official parade route as long as they have a permit.
The exact location of the protest zones and security perimeter will be decided by the city commission in the coming weeks.
Go figure! Those who don’t like the freedom discussed in the 2nd Amendment don’t much care for the 1st either. I’m sure they would also love to have TSA goons outside to illegally search people too, because they aren’t just anti-gun, they are against ALL Freedom!
A convicted Bay State killer convinced the Feds that his 15 years behind bars were so stressful that it gave him PTSD, clearing the way for him to collect a $700-a-month taxpayer-funded disability handout.
Lester Young, convicted for shooting a Dorchester man during a 1994 robbery, realized his big house stint made him a nervous wreck after he was paroled in 2009 and had to face an automatic bathroom sink.
First up he was convicted of murdering somebody during an armed robbery and he’s FREE! I know a few felons, I know people who were drug addicts and/or drug dealers, I know people who have spent time in Jail. I don’t know ANYBODY who’s MURDERED another person. I’m not a huge fan of those other serious crimes, but Murder is a bridge too far. Also I’ll point out that it is VERY easy not to murder people…I DO IT EVERY DAY! Somebody who goes that step to murder really isn’t the type of person who should be off a leash EVER.
But to add to that this monster got out, and got a bullshit diagnosis for PTSD BECAUSE of prison, and was taking money from the public coffers.
Yeah, get that, MURDER somebody, and they PAY you for it, meanwhile start a company and employ people, work a productive job, help people, make products, make the world a better place and they TAKE YOUR MONEY TO GIVE TO MONSTERS WHO ACTIVELY MADE THE WORLD WORSE!!!!
Oh and note that this came up on the violation of his parole. He did his time, and still can’t act right. Having trouble adjusting to society? Simple DEATH PENALTY! We’ll put you down painlessly and with dignity.
There are Millions of people who can behave themselves in the very broad sense of not committing crimes that are associated capital punishment and life sentences. Why do we need to cause so much trouble and turmoil for the rejects who can’t meet that VERY low bar.
Seriously, I’m not saying you have to obey the speed limit, stay off drugs, or even not punch people in the face because you’re a total asshole, I’m talking about people who do predatory fraud of people’s life saving, people who murder, people who rape, people who torture.
That’s a VERY low bar, and if you’re reading this, you’ve never even gotten CLOSE to this bar in your darkest hour.
Those who are so deviant they can’t stay above this abyssal limit are really beyond rehabilitation, and probably had multiple warnings before they crosses the line. Let’s not waste any more time or trouble on them, that’s for people who are GOOD.
Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy signed a bill into law Wednesday that abolishes the death penalty, making his state the 17th in the nation to abandon capital punishment and the fifth in five years to usher in a repeal.
The law is effective immediately, though prospective in nature, meaning that it would not apply to those already sentenced to death. It replaces the death penalty with life in prison without the possibility of release as the state’s highest form of punishment.
I believe the last death sentence to be issued (but not yet performed) in the state are these feral beasts.
Probably this moonbat criminal coddler will do his best to make sure these monsters die of old age before they ever feel the needle (because somehow moonbats think letting a human being rot in a cage is “More Humane” than a quick painless death….but then again they’re leeching off the public coffers, and is there ANYTHING moonbats like more than watching Tax Dollars getting flushed?), still think about this: Governor Malloy thinks the next set of monsters who rape and burn to death a household full of women and children, they deserve BETTER.
These despicable politicians and “Progressive” Degenerates care more about the worst monsters our society can churn out than the best….and they think they mandate (at the point of the gun) that the best in society should pay for the pleasure of the worst.
This is why I fight against “Progressives”, we have no common ground, and we have NOTHING to agree on.
Saw this on IRC as I woke up. Neither parties are me, and honestly I don’t even really talk with either of these guys, but I thought I’d share:

Swans have a seemingly placid demeanor, and their monogamous mating habits have long made them a symbol of lasting love. But the creatures — generally snowy white, with long graceful necks and a black “mask” around their eyes — are territorial and can be quite aggressive when threatened. This aggression makes them good at driving off geese; it can also lead to tragedy.
Anthony Hensley was a 37-year-old married father of two who worked for a company that uses dogs and swans to shoo pesky geese from properties in the area. Hensley had taken to a kayak Sunday morning to check on the swans in a Des Plaines-area pond when one of the larger birds turned on him, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
Cook County sheriff’s investigators believe Hensley either got too close to the swan or the swan’s nesting area, the Sun-Times said. Hensley rolled off his kayak and landed in the water, and the swan kept up its relentless attack.
The Sun-Times reports that the swan continued to pursue Hensley as he tried to swim to shore. Hensley was submerged when emergency workers arrived, and an autopsy found that he died from drowning near the Bay Colony condominiums in unincorporated Des Plaines.
Wow! Swans are fucking HUGE! I can imagine that if you’re in the water trying to keep your head up, unless you can plant your feet on the bottom, that swan can probably provide enough grunt to keep that head down until the fight stops.
Odd animal attack, but animals can be deadly even in what we consider Urban areas. Be they Coyotes or Bears, or Pit Bulls and Swans. I can imagine that if a gun was on the caretaker’s belt, maybe he could have stopped this before he died. Maybe not.
Either way, this isn’t a “Gun Death” so it doesn’t count.
Employers at some U.S. airports are being allowed to hire workers without completing all background security checks because of a backlog in the screening process, federal officials said.
The backlog and resulting relief granted to airports was first reported by WSB-TV in Atlanta, which obtained a memo from airport officials outlining the Transportation Security Administration directive. The memo was sent from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport officials on April 20 to airlines and contractors there. It says workers can be granted access to certain parts of the airport before their checks are finished.
“To allow for a continuity of operations, TSA has provided airports and airlines with interim regulatory relief,” TSA spokesman Jon Allen said in a statement. “At no time was security at risk, and all new employees will still undergo identity verification and be subject to watch list matching.”
Of course the report is vague, but I think we’ve seen all the obvious flaws, like dumping out your water bottle before you go see the sexual deviants at the screening area…and then seeing some chump wheeling in a dolly full of water bottles to be sold on the other side in the various shops.
Of course its not like even if the system was running at 100% these fools could catch the next major terrorist, but hey, now it means the Terrorists won’t even have to break a sweat to get through.
….While a high school dropout sticks his hands down your pants and makes your children cry.
I don’t see it very much anymore, but often the people who use “Gun Death” use that metric to not only demonize guns, but also give the illusion of safety. “Why do you NEED a gun, we have almost no ‘Gun Death’ here!”
A 25-year-old homeowner shot a 26-year-old intruder Wednesday morning after police said he broke into the home on Mardale Avenue by smashing a window.
Bedford Heights detective Ken Hatcher said police were notified around 11 a.m. by the homeowner that moments earlier he had looked outside and seen the intruder breaking flower pots at a neighboring home.
Hatcher said the intruder then saw him and had broken a kitchen window and crawled in.
The homeowner, who had called 9-1-1, did not hang up the phone. He then confronted the intruder, who then grabbed a knife from the kitchen and threatened the homeowner.
Hatcher said the homeowner then grabbed a 45-caliber semiautomatic pistol and shot the intruder once in the chest area.
He grabbed a kitchen knife, that’s a deadly weapon. The homeowner grabbed a .45, that’s a better weapon, and then good guys win.
Of course those who pitch the metric of “Gun Death” would rather the intruder have all the advantages. They’re pro-criminal. Hell many of them ARE ACTUAL criminals, and they’re just showing professional courtesy.
Also for those of you in the caliber war, so much for the .45 ACP being the fist of an angry God. I remember hearing say to somebody “You shoot somebody in the hand and they’ll fall down!” Yet this fella took a .45 to the chest and the story doesn’t even say he was in “Critical Condition”. All handguns suck, but they’re nice to have when you need one!
Buddy at work was musing at how they have pit bulls fight for sport, he suggested sticking mixed-species who are known to be ornery into a steel cage until one expires.
He suggested an Ostrich and a Camel in Thunderdome. Seriously, that MUST BE!
