“Gun Death” Cab Driver

We’ve talked about Pizza Delivery, and Real estate agents, Cab Drivers have it pretty dangerous too.

Hooshang Vatanpour — a father, husband and cab driver — was kidnapped and beaten to death by two customers last year.

His body was then set on fire.

They’re trying to make this a capitol case, and I think it deserves it. Of course not only are people fighting this to be a life-in-prison sentence, but also many will not that since this was not a “Gun Death” its irrelevant.

“Gun Death” Grandma Beaten

Gonna shamelessly steal this one from Jay

LYNN, Mass. — An elderly Lynn woman was left bruised and bandaged after two thieves attacked her outside of her home and stole her purse on Monday….Sozanski has her head bandaged and is now suffering from a concussion. She can’t believe that she was attacked in her driveway, all because someone wanted to steal that great grandmother’s purse.

As Jay pointed out, this is the face of gun control. Nobody had a gun in this situation, and the grandmother was left severely beaten. Nice “utopia” huh?

Sure Happy It’s Thursday

Sitemeter and Comments imply you guys are happy with how I’m running the show here at Weer’d World. I must say this week has really been breaking my balls, I’ll be happy to see a weekend (even tho I’ll be in the Lab for some of it). Let’s just say tonight I’ll be happy to hoist an adult beverage and tune into BB&Guns for rants about TSA, Thanksgiving, and whatever else puts sand up yer craw.

I should probably work out too. Oh and I also need to reload the “Gun Death?” file. If you have a story send it to weerdbeard AT gmail DOT com.

Food Chain?

Also follow this link chain. Lissa did battle with a snake. Mr. Serpent made some bad choices and got his just desserts. Borepatch left a link to This Blog that contains this video:

I’m curious what’s going on here. Obviously kitty is doing a kitty thing, and I’m willing to chalk the sheer stupidity of this scenario down to domestication. But what are the gators up to? I suspect given that they live in a populated area pest critters like rats possums, and squirrels make up a part of their diet as do pets like dogs and cats. Were the gators just full-up and curious, and not interested in being touched?

Odd video. I’d make a self defense analogy about refusing to be a victim, but let’s face it, if this was a defensive situation, all the fangs and claws Mr. kitty has wouldn’t be enugh to scratch Mr. Gator’s rough hide….

“Gun Death” a REALLY Brutal One

Wow, this is a gut-twister sent to me by Jennifer. Warning this one is BRUTAL.

An Oklahoma community is in shock after a 4-year-old boy is stabbed with scissors 36 times and killed in a brutal home invasion.

Dakota Lane and his 6-year-old brother were sleeping when the attack took place Tuesday night, Muskogee police said. The 6-year-old was not injured.

Dakota Lane’s mother, who is eight months pregnant, was injured trying to fend off the attacker, whom police identified as 18-year-old Aaron Laconsello. The boy later died at a hospital.

Yep nothing but a pair of Scissors, and a young boy is brutally murdered, and I would say a young mother and her unborn baby are lucky to be alive.

The people who tout “Gun Death” as a metric don’t seem to consider the value that this young mother might have if she herself had a gun. All it took was a pair of scissors to take her son’s life, and almost her own and her unborn baby, but a pregnant woman against a young male? She’d need a gun to make the odds even. That would be a “Gun Death” I could salute.

Grrrrrr

You know what, go read Jay’s Dead Goblin Count, it’ll make you feel better.

Four Loko

I’ll spoil the punchline of Bob’s recent post but go read his comparison to the media freak-out about Four-Loko “Malt Beverage”. Also I thought I’d post this great commentary by the Malt Liquor Master, Bruz40

As I said at Bob’s the restrictions do nothing. You can still get hard liquor for high-proofage drinking (far more that’s in any malt), and one can simply chase with energy drinks or coffee or tea (How I used to roll during my college days of heavy drinking) or go ahead and just mix up a vodka and redbull and have a DIY Four Loko.

Stupid laws for stupid people! Maybe I need to flag down a 40 for Friday’s VC.

Bear Gun

Just a little gun-geekery here. I like to hike and camp-out as often as I can manage (which recently has been not-at-all), but when switching from a populated environment to a rustic one safety concerns can change. Camping out in the woods or hiking a mountain trail changes the potential dangers. While there’s always a chance of encountering a dangerous person on a trail and at a campsite (and many many documented cases thereof) suddenly 4-legged predators become an issue. Around here its more geekery than anything as probably the most aggressive predator is the Coyote, which are neither big nor tough animals. Rutting bull Moose have been known to hurt people as well which is a VERY large threat, but from what I hear overall easy to avoid. In the middle we have the Black bear, which is also not terribly aggressive, nor impressively large, but attacks are not unheard of, and while they are hardly as impressive as their brown cousins to the west, they are VERY tough animals. I was told a story by a trapper who had dropped a snared sow with a single .357 Magnum round between the eyes. He then left the trip line to retrieve his ATV to haul off the carcass, when returning he found the bear had come back to life. Seems the magnum slug had flattened out against the dome of her thick skull only giving her a nasty concussion, but doing nothing fatal.

Of course there is nothing in this mix that my FAL or my 12 gauge loaded with slugs couldn’t handle….and in a pinch several well-placed shots from a 7.62×39 AK or SKS would likely dissuade a bear or moose. But when I’m hiking I really don’t want to lug around a big long-gun for the off chance that I get between a sow and her cubs, or stumble into a bull-moose rut, or somebody leaves some food out at a campsite and the raiding bear gets aggressive. And while I did document a while back a store where a person dropped a Grizzly with 9 shots from a .45 ACP handgun (I assume a 1911 like what I normally carry) In such dire circumstances I’d prefer a little more gun.

I will say I do have a shine for such uses to the Ruger Alaskan in .454 Casull preferentially. Its not as comically huge as the S&W X-Frame Revolvers, still holds a full 6-rounds in the wheel, and while .454 doesn’t quite pair up with .500 Magnum, or .460 Magnum, its a really stout cartridge.

That being said a wiki-wander had me stumble upon the .460 Rowland While not quite the stump-puller the .454 Casull is, its a REALLY stout round, and on top of that it can be used in most .45 ACP platform guns with minor modifications, also .45 ACP loading dies can be used to load up cartridges. Throw this on top of the fact that there is a conversion kit for the S&W M&P45, the kit nearly doubles the price of the gun, but man the idea of 10+1 rounds of magnum-power .45 ACP in a rock-solid platform like the M&P…hmmm Also I dunno where they hid it on their site but they do have a picture of the kit.

Just a pipe-dream at this point, but given that ammo prices and availability are on-par with .454 Casull, the price of a NIB M&P+ Conversion kit is about the same as a NIB Ruger Alaskan. 10+1 vs. 6, and the fact that the M&P can be converted to .45 ACP, vs. the Casull dropping down to .45 Colt, I’m starting to see this as a potentially VERY viable gun to add to my collection…
