As a general rule you use the term “Negligent Discharge” when an “oops” happens with a firearm. That isn’t always the case
I lock the slide open, pull the mag, shake out the round in the chamber and replace it in the magazine. Grab the slide, pull it back and release and *boom*. Gun goes off. Now, my finger was nowhere near the trigger when this thing went off. Bullet impacted the ground about five feet in front of me. (Because we always, always, always keep the muzzle in a safe direction NO MATTTER WHAT.) Now Im curious.I dump the mag, lock the slide back, and examine things closely. Amazingly, the firing pin is protruding from the bolt face with the slide locked back. I poke my finger in there and push on the exposed firing pin…no travel, the thing is frozen in place. Somehow the firing pin locked in the forward position and when I dropped the slide the gun slam-fired the next round. Unbelieveable. I have read of such things happening but never experienced it myself, and I’ve shot more guns than most people ever will. I gave the guy back his gun, pointed out the firing pin issue, and said “Do not load this gun. It *will* go off if you load it. Find the instructions and disassemble the slide and see why the firing pin is locked up in the forward position.”
Scary stuff! The gun was an AMT Automag in .45 Win Mag. A pretty serious heater. I’ve heard many horror stories of AMT quality control issues, and I’ve shot a fistfull of really sucky AMT guns. Who knows what’s wrong with this one, but its not safe to use until its fixed.
The Moral of this story is Always follow the 4 rules of gun safety whenever a firearm is in your hand
RULE I: ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED
RULE II: NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO DESTROY
RULE III: KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET
RULE IV: BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET
Not only do these rules keep you aware of negligent handling that can cause serious problems, but it also keeps things safe in the odd event that a gun malfunctions and discharges.
Another “common” (I say that because guns that fail in a way that the gun discharges is quite rare) is firing pin blocks getting worn and the gun discharging when the hammer is dropped by means of the decocker. The most common culprit of this I’ve read about is the CZ-52 Whenever you decock a firearm ALWAYS keep it pointed in a safe direction. Also if you carry a DA gun like the CZ-82/83 or a CZ-75 that doesn’t have a decocking lever (dunno why only CZs are coming to mind) it might be a good idea to have your “Safe direction” be a clearing barrel that way if your finger slips and the hammer falls with enough velocity to ignite the primer the round will quickly be captured by the sand or dirt in the barrel.
It actually doesn’t take a lot of sand to stop most rounds, and I actually like the way the CZ-82 is set up for carry, as you can engage the safety or lower the hammer, but not both which would be redundant in my book.
Just be safe people, it doesn’t take much effort if you keep your mind about it.

Self Defense Blog “The Armed Citizen” is being sued for copywrite infringement
Today, The Armed Citizen received informal notice in the form of a media inquiry about a lawsuit against this website and its owners, David Burnett and Clayton Cramer. The lawsuit, reportedly filed in US District Court on July 20th, alleges that The Armed Citizen and its owners “willfully copied” original source content from the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
According to news reports, Righthaven LLC has reportedly filed lawsuits against 75 other political websites and/or blogs without prior contact or attempt at resolution. The sites include FreeRepublic.com, the Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative and the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws….We have removed all postings except this one until such time as we can carefully review each one for compliance with Fair Use–and it is entirely possible that they will never come back. Make you sure thank the Las Vegas Review-Journal for destroying a valuable gun rights resource because they can’t figure out how to run a newspaper, and have to make their money with dozens of lawsuits filed against multiple organizations for unintentional violations of Fair Use.
Scary stuff right there. The Armed citizen is both an amazing source for defensive firearms use, as well as citation to the local news sources that report them. Hopefully this will be resolved quickly and the blogmasters will continue their hard work again to keep us all informed of the real and human story of defensive firearms uses, and hopefully this will set precedence against papers maliciously abusing copywrite laws.

I see this as nothing more than a bunch of petulant fools attempting to monopolize their voice in the world, and I hope they will be appropriately punished. Sadly the real victim here is the public, and the reporters on both sides of the news (both bloggers and old-media reporters), as news blogs serve as a great way to aggregate and direct new eyes to news sources they otherwise would be unaware of.
Las Vegas Review-Journal is simply slitting their own throats, and will likely be soon adding their reporting and printing staff to the unemployment roster, and leaving a void in news coverage.

What I want to know is how they got so many big actors to sign on to such a ham-handed script…
Overall I don’t really mind not being in Marine Bio anymore. Lab work is cleaner, more regular, easier, and pays better. Not being offshore half the time also helps you have a more normal social life. Of course its all safer too!
That being said, this time of year I really miss being offshore. The weather as a general rule is much nicer, the hot sun and the cool sea make for an agreeable climate, and one thing that’s cool is the BIG fish come out. The biggest I’d commonly see on the North Atlantic during the summer months is the Basking Shark
Friggin’ awesome video! Basking sharks are HUGE, the ones I’d usally see were around 15 to 30 feet long, and they can freak you out when the visibility isn’t great as they have similar features of the Great White shark, unless you can see the snout (which is more pointed, and will give you the frame of reference to see that the dorsal fin is MUCH further back) or the coloration (Whites are a dark charcoal on their backs, Baskings are a mottled Olive to drab brown). Of course while the White Shark is a top predator, the Basking Shark is a filter feeder and only has small teeth. Also basking sharks are known to breach completely out of the water, I’ve never actually seen this, but I’ve been just late enough to see the splash they leave behind.
Another wierd creature is the Ocean Sunfish or Mola Mola
These guys, while not as big as the basking shark are surprisingly large, especially with their bizarre body morphology. Like the basking shark, these guys love to soak up the summer sun and can be seen resting at the surface, they’re also quite curious and will come to inspect a boat. These guys are also gentle giants, as they feed predominantly on jelly fish.
Really cool fish.
So some might have noticed the troll in my last “Gun Death” post, maybe he’ll behave at the new place, but maybe Larry Potterfield’s truck will break down in my yard and he’ll excahnge a few cases of ammo for a hand changing a flat.
He seemed to belittle the whole idea, but what he didn’t notice, or was ignoring was the cases I list under this category contain NO guns on either side. This notion came to mind when I read this story
The most important of these men, to me, was my father. When I was a boy, he and my mother moved our family of six from the Terrace Village public housing projects in Pittsburgh’s Hill District to a predominantly white neighborhood. While many of our neighbors welcomed us, we were not welcomed by all. I recall a brick through the front window, and other incidents. But burned into my memory is the Sunday evening when my father was beaten with a tire iron on the street in front of our home, and in front of us, his four little children. Those three young white men were never caught.
When my father, with his surgically reconstructed eye socket and jaw, was released from the hospital, he did something he never once considered when we lived in the projects. He bought a gun.
Every evening after that, before going to bed, I and my siblings would go out onto the front porch to say goodnight to my father as he sat in his chair, shotgun across his lap, with its black barrel glistening under the porch light. I never once felt unsafe. I never once had trouble sleeping. My sense of security did not come from the Pittsburgh Police, or from the law. My sense of security came from my father, and his gun.
There were no more incidents, at least not any that I can recall, after my father exercised his Second Amendment right. It was his contribution to “non-violence” in our neighborhood.

We can only imagine the white boys would prefer the black family to live in, as some people might say “a black neighborhood where they sell dope on the street corner and where you see what must be crack houses.” or “a full-fledged ghetto” (for those who don’t recognize the quote, I’ll let you know that the quote is put there for irony and emphasis of bigotry), when the object of their ire decided not to get out of town, I suspect they wanted to give him a little more “incentive”.
But they didn’t. Why? Because the antis hadn’t won yet.
Claim I’m putting words in your mouth all you want, truth is truth, and those who hate freedom truly are disgusting.
