A Very Pleasant Suprise

First up, I’m in Maine right now. Dad’s Birthday is next week and the wife and I came up as a surprise.

After lunch I asked Dad what he wanted to do, and he suggested we go to the International Crytozoology Museum in Portland.

Now I generally discuss Cryptozoology in the more schlocky visage as seen in TV specials and supernatural radio shows. Well the mood was set when we were personally greeted by the proprietor, Dr. Loren Coleman. He started us with an exhibit of things that I wouldn’t consider cryptozoology, like the Giant Squid, or the Giant Panda, The Megamouth Shark, or the Okapi.

These things are REAL critters, not lore…but they once were. A good way to get into the mindset. Also the museum openly discusses hoaxes like various bigfoot track, and sideshow oddities like the “FeeJee Mermaid” and the Minnesota Iceman.

Its a small space but with lots of interesting artifacts and displays. I had a ton of fun.

The Museum is at 11 Avon Street in Portland Maine, which is a small side street behind Joe’s Smoke Shop. General Admission is $7.00, $5.00 for under 13.

Well worth it, and I’ll defiantly check back.

It’s on my list, if I ever get up that way. Was there any mention of the ivory-billed woodpecker? That’s a subject of much discussion in Arkansas.

  2. Wally says:

I have been wanting to hit the cryotozoo museum for a while now… Sounds like I really need to!

I wish I was closer. That’s right up my nerdy alley.

  4. Thank you, Weer’d Beard.

I appreciate you checking out the museum, which, of course, is five times bigger than it use to be a mere three months ago, before we moved to this beautiful new Avon Street space. Over three thousand items are on display, including information on Ivory-Billed Woodpeckers, Bigfoot, Caddy, Nessie, Yeti, Thylacine, Champ, Orang-Pendek, Dover Demon, Mothman, Chupacabras, Jersey Devil, Ogopogo, Sea Serpents, True Giants, Yowie, Black Panthers, and much, much more. Being the world’s only cryptozoology museum, we are comprehensive, displaying original, one-of-a-kind artifacts, casts, hair samples, fecal material, and such. I am delighted to hear you enjoyed your visit, and good to read you say you will definitely be checking back, as we do add new exhibits all the time.
