Theremin: THE SPY!

So the Mrs. and I went to a local ice creme shop. Let’s just set the scene that this place has AWESOME home-made ice creme, a nice sound system, eclectic music, and psychedelic paintings on the walls.

The music was some jazz combo that featured a Theremin, and while discussing this unique instrument, and its Russian inventor, the owner noted that he was also A SPY!!!!!

I hadn’t heard that, but indeed he sure was! Very neat stuff!

So let’s listen to one of the most famous Theremin pieces known, the opening theme to The Day the Earth Stood Still, one of the greatest Sci-Fi films ever made!

Music invented by a physicist and SPY!

    “TDTESS”

I love that movie. I’ve actually watched it three times in the last month. (aunt Bea and the choir teacher [John Masters] always give me a chuckle) There’s something about Michael Rennie that I find very interesting. (I could also say the same thing about Peter Lorre and John Carradine) I just can’t look away when they’re on screen.

Speaking of the theramin as a musical instrument, have a listen to the “Beach Boys song Good Vibrations”. I’m not a fan of the band, but they use a theramin to good advantage on this track.

Or, if you like TDTESS, outube a video by the band “Klaatu” called “true life hero”. It’s probably older than you are, but it’s a pretty fun romp.

Glad to hear there are lots of classic film buffs still out there, and reading here!

Also I couldn’t agree with you more about Peter Lorre and John Carradine, such great character actors!

Was he not also an instrument of the Soviet System? Or was he really working for the West?
