Birthday Ramblings

Wow the blog has been bleak recently. Been busy doing various things over the past few days, and the other time I’ve been doing other things. I know you don’t mind, but I thought I’d just let ya know.

Well Tommora is the first day of 2011, and also my Birthday. But that doesn’t stop me from celebrating for the last several days, with no end in sight. (I told the wife, that this year I’ll stop celebrating on Tuesday)

So let’s have some random ramblings. First up, our house is not Mouse-tight. Its close and I have an idea of what can fix it, but for the time, it appears that it isn’t easy for the critters to get in, so we only find them when they get driven into the house by extreme weather. Seems the cold weather got one into the house. I saw evidence of mouse activity just before the wife and I left for Maine. I didn’t want to come home to a dead mouse who has begun to putrefy, so I let the little bastard have the run of the place.

Little shitbag had a field day with a basket of snack food we keep in the kitchen. Well she got her’s.

I won’t lie, I get a whole big-game hunt feel from trapping mice. Also the Maxim-style snap-traps (I use the Victor Brand, and like them best) are hands-down the most humane way of dealing with problem mice. I’ll spare you the autopsy report, but I’ll just say this little bastard felt NOTHING, and likely didn’t even suspect she was being killed at the moment of truth. Now things like glue traps and poison don’t do that. I can’t speak for the electric kill taps are, but I can’t imagine they do as good a job as the snap-traps. As for live-trapping mice, I’ll just say from all my readings of Mouse biology, live-trapping mice is essentially kill-trapping them, just the killing is done by predators or other mice. You think that’s better than a quick and painless kill? I sure don’t. Well she went out painlessly, and I’m glad she’s out of my house.

So the Vector’s threw a wonderful brunch for the wife and I, and unbeknown to me there was a birthday twist. First from Rockstar’s Mom, I got a pound of Bacon with a really hilarious card (my reputation proceeds me), but there was this.

That is a pair of pancake-cakes birthday cakes. (how many times can you say “cake” in one sentence?) One is a sweet cake with Blueberries and chocolate chips, but my favorite was the one with sausage and scrambled eggs. I doused the latter in hotsauce and found it to be most awesome. The Sweet one was good too, but just regular awesome :). Thanks Rockstar for making something so cool for my Birthday!

Still I think hands down my best birthday present will be this.

That’s me getting Ms $w33t-P down for a nap. She didn’t want to go to sleep, but I’m a biologist, and I know tricks. Seriously, I got the baby bug BAD!

So for my evening I don’t have any crazy plans. Frankly with the way work has been going (BTW Thursday was another rough day at work, when I thought it was going to be a cake walk!) I’m glad to have a quiet night. But I guess Quiet is going to be relative, as I’ll be on the New Year’s Vicious Circle which is no-doubt going to be fun.

As a pre-game I’m drinking this

That’s a black-peppertini made from my latest batch of black pepper vodka, made a little bit dirty with some blue cheese olives. The glass is a gift from my Aunt a few Christmases ago. She got me a pair of them and they’re really neat. they have a stemless bowl that sits on top of a globe that you can fill with ice to add extra chill to your drink. Not a great glass for a party as it takes two hands to run the glass when standing, and its heavy, but for sitting at your computer drinking a martini, its really cool. Also I LOVE these glasses for having a martini at sunset while sitting on my back deck on a hot summer evening, as the globe keeps the glass plenty cool even in the heat of the summer, and you’re just sitting back and enjoying the evening.

So that’s my evening, I hope yours is as good as mine!

Just another justification for your “kindred spirit” status in my book.

I’m generally good during the summer, but as soon as the cold snap sets in, it’s man against beast.

I’m glad I’m not the only one. The traps have been untouched for 3 days now. The wife stated relief that the mice are now gone…I agreed with the relief, but wished that maybe there was a pair to catch first. πŸ˜€

The mice in my neck of the woods are pretty damn smart and can usually eat the bait without triggering the smack down.

I’ve found that dried fruit is the best bait. Easy to mold around the platform and hard as hell to eat without triggering.

        Good hunting

What brand traps do you use? I find the Victor brand with the plastic paddle is the best combination of ease of setting but sensitivity of use. The wife made me take one down because it kept triggering every time she walked by and scared the daylights out of her. πŸ™‚

After you left yesterday, the missus was working on plans for the next batch of pancake-cakes. We’ll have to have you over again for them, and I think we’ll have to get Uncle Jesse involved in the planning. I’m sure he can come up with some good combos.
