An Old Lesson

We’ve been over this many times people, but given the most recent thing involving Bill Engvall blabbing about the 2nd Amendment and somehow like it has ANYTHING to do with ducks and deer.

I think most of the “Fudds” have gotten the message, it it could be that Mr. Engvall is a wealthy comedian now so he may have a bit of Ivory Tower syndrome. Or it could be that while he’s a “Redneck Comic” he’s famous because of the “Comic” part, not from the “Redneck” part. He may hunt deer for fun, but nobody will PAY him hunt for them. (That was Jim Zumbo) and likely he’s sacrificed a LOT of time in the treestand and the blind for his career.

That’s all a nice way of saying he’s out of touch. This is for all the Bill’s out there.

On Tuesday, Lanny Breuer, Assistant Attorney General for the Department of Justice’s Criminal Division, testified before the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Terrorism about his knowledge of BATFE’s gunwalking operations, and his support for gun control…”Today, Senator, we are not even permitted to have ATF receive reports about multiple sales of long guns, of any kind of semiautomatic weapon or the like. . . . Very few hunters in the United States or sports people and law-abiding people really need to have semiautomatic weapons or long guns. . . .”

So here’s the mission. I write a gun blog. I talk about guns, gear, knives, and politics. If you’re reading me you’re probably interested in some of the same things. You get it. You probably carry a handgun for protection, you own “high capacity” magazines, and you probably have what Jim Zumbo called a “Terrorist Rifle”. But now Zumbo and Engvall were talking about what I probably would best describe as defensive/SHTF rifles. Of course even that is wrong, there are many sports that are designed around semi-auto rifles that accept detachable magazines, from three-gun to high-power, but also these rifles are PERFECTLY suited for hunting everything from small game to large dangerous game. A tactical shotgun will harvest birds just as easily as from a traditional wing gun.

You need to seek out somebody who owns guns, but aren’t enamored with them. These are the people who bring a half-empty box of tarnished .308 Soft points to the range to sight in their rifle, then stoke up the magazine and go walking through the woods, maybe they take a single shot, maybe they don’t. Then they go home, clean the mud off of it, and it goes on the wall until next year. The guy who is crazy about breaking little clay birds, but has no interest on any other shooting sports.

Find them and talk to them about this. Let them know that unlike your more limited deer rifle, or bird gun, these can be cleaned up and go into service to protect the home from danger. And remember that’s why the founding fathers wrote the 2nd Amendment. They got the hunting thing. They didn’t have grocery stores back then, if they were hungry somebody needed to shoot a critter, toss a line in the sea or pond, or physically raise the livestock on their land. Even the guy with his small heard of cows to feed the village needed his guns to keep the cattle safe from predators. But there’s nothing about deer, ducks, or wolves in the US Constitution, they didn’t fear that being taken away, they had no fear that hunting would be banned. Instead they feared their oppressive government.

And talk to them about this quote. The cat is out of the bag. The adjustable M4 stock on an AR-15 doesn’t make it so you can tuck it in your back pocket to rob a liquor store, or somehow less suited for hunting (and actually MORE suited for hunting as you can adjust your gun for how thick your clothing is that day, or for what shooting position you’re taking), or that a bayonet lug has anything to do with ANYTHING (Hell the Army isn’t even training use of a Bayonet anymore) Read the above quote, they’re not after the kickass tactical guns I like, they’re after YOUR guns. You have a semi-auto shotgun for trap, skeet, or bird hunting? Use an auto-loading rifle? These people don’t see a difference between an Auto-5 and a Benelli riot gun. They don’t see the difference between a Browning BAR hunting rifle, and a SCAR-16 carbine.

And when you think about it that way, do you think these people don’t have a problem with a bolt-action repeater? Or a Pump Action Shotgun? How about your trusty .30-30 Lever rifle?

There are a lot less “Fudds” then there was before the 94 Assault weapons ban, but there are still plenty of them, and we need to seek them out, and give them the straight dope!

The fudds need to remember their Ben Franklin:
“Gentlemen, we must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately”

And, to tell the truth, the banners aren’t exactly too fired up about hunting or skeet shooting either. Yeah, the leftist politicos may pose in spotless hunting clothes with a double shotgun around election time. But it’s just to attract votes- then it’s back to banning lead ammo, closing ranges and regulating the crap out of hunting.

Hence why the speak out against, in this case ANY semi-auto long-gun and pistol.

Even uncle booger and Cousin Jethro, not to mention Archibald Buffington III, all have semi-autos, and some might have a hi-point or a glock in a sock drawer or a closet as well.

They want to ban ALL GUNS….they learned they can’t do it in one swoop, so they’re now looking to do it one-at-a-time

In my experience, there are actually 2 types of Fudds out there. Those who are Ignorant and can’t see the Danger(those are the ones you are trying to “Open their Eyes”). But then there are those who know the Danger, yet still are willing to let the Gooberment dictate how much of the RKBA to destroy, so long as THEY get to keep their “Hunting and Trap and Long-Range Slow Fire Target Guns,” etc. I think they have the “Only Ones” genetic defect like some LEOs do. I actually think they are more Dangerous to the Cause than an Anti-Gunner who’s never even held a Firearm before. There’s a small chance that one can break the Anti free from the Brain-Washing, but someone who has a Safe full of Hunting Guns who thinks it’s “Okay to Ban Assault Weapons?” They already KNOW what Guns can and can’t do. But those Fudds can’t seem to grasp the principle of “First they Came for the Jews…”

A tactical shotgun will harvest birds just as easily as from a traditional wing gun.

Err…not exactly. There is a reason shotguns designed for wing shooting usually have a long barrel. The extra weight and momentum out on the end of the gun helps with follow-through on longer shots, and the extra sight radius helps with aiming. A tactical shotgun CAN take birds on the wing, sure, but it won’t be as easy to use as a shotgun designed for it. You’ll also have to either make or get a new plug for it if you’re hunting migratory game birds, or remove the magazine extension so you can use the factory plug, as Federal law limits you to three rounds for migratory birds.

And trying to tell someone who knows better that a tactical shotgun is just as good for bird hunting as one that is designed for it is a good way to get yourself discredited real quick. As an analogy, it’d be like recommending a double barrel shotgun for a three gun match. Sure, it’d work, but not well.

You have a much better argument with the AR-15 angle.
