FAL Love!

Every Day No Days Off has this great video of the FN FAL from the perspective of a Call of Duty fan

As I’ve said before with some deserved controversy I’m not a fan of Full-auto in an infantry rifle, and even without the bullshit of the NFA I’m perfectly comfortable with my go-to rifles not having the full-auto switch (tho I wouldn’t turn my nose up at a select-fire gun if all things were equal) and not worrying about the controlability of a light rifle on full auto, I’d prefer a full-power cartridge over the more in-vogue intermediate “Assault Rifle” cartridges, such as the 5.56x45mm and 7.62x39mm, and their variants.

Yes I know there are lots of people who have fallen in war from shots fired from 7.62x39mm and 5.56x45mm rifles, and I also know several people who have bagged Northeast White Tailed Deer (about as close an analoge to size and weight of an adult man) with AKs and AR-15s, and Mini-14s, and I know of many more. Still the Bubba’s around Maine and Vermont seem to like .308 Winchester, and .30-30 WCF, as well as the venerable .30-06 for dropping bambi, and certainly many of them have stories of tracking a deer with its vitals perforated for long distances in dense woods from one of these rounds.

So couple that with the weight and ergonomics of the FAL, its my choice of a go-to-rifle!

Now if only my state would allow me an 18″ Paratrooper rifle. 🙁

My only complaint is they don’t mention DS Arms being a modern company that still makes the FAL pattern rifle, so you can still get one today without having to look for surplus or parts kits!

“Still the Bubba’s around Maine and Vermont seem to like … .30-30 WCF”

The 30-30 is an intermediate cartridge. Cut the rim off and it’s not much different than the 7.62×39 out of a similar length barrel.

You need to spend a little more time looking at the cartridge loads for the .30-30. Its certainly a lighter cartridge than .308, but that LOOONG neck give it options to load some very heavy bullets without sacrificing case capacity. 7.62×39 is set up for 123gr 0.311″ bullets and little else.

Maybe the old Winchester Factory load was similar to the soviet intermediate….just like the military .30-06 load for the Garand is equivalent to 7.62x51mm NATO, but comparing cartridges on such a narrow level is hardly fair!

My fave x39 handload is a 150gr pill coming close to 30-30 velocity.

But I wont diss the FAL. It’s starting to grow on me.

Gotta admit, the FN-FAL’s Stepchild, the SCAR -H is SWEET! But for what FN’s asking, we could still get 2 DS Arms FN-FAL’s for the Same Price.

    • Weerd Beard says:

And the lack of magazines (and given that they are single-source at the moment) is a pretty big problem. Meanwhile with the FAL you have surplus plus new Magazines coming out of DS Arms if you have a Metric Pattern Rifle. If you have an inch pattern, well that’s a rough row to hoe.

      • McThag says:

If you have an inch pattern gun, use the metric mags!

My first FAL was an inch gun built off an L1A1 parts kit on an Entrèprise receiver. It happily used metric mags.

The two metric mags it didn’t like don’t work in my metric DSA gun (making me regret hanging on to them all these years.

        • Weerd Beard says:

Yeah but an inch-pattern receiver will only fit oddball accessories like stocks, and really the world has decided the FAL is metric…much like the 1911 is Single-Action.

Sure you can fuck with the bastards, but that way only lies tears! 🙁

I keep looking at the DSA para for my next rifle. I mean, I’ve already got more than enough FAL mags 😉

    • Weerd Beard says:

Yep, if the Mass AWB expires I’m immediatly going out and getting a S&W M&P15-22 with the adjustable stock, and an 18″ DSA Para, and I think I’d see if I can drop an AR-10, or a CETME birdcage Flash-hider so the muzzle will look more like the FNC that Al Pacino Used at the end of Heat.
