So the photo isn’t just a mock-up, there is a 28 gauge Taurus Judge. I won’t shed an opinion on it because even Chuck Hawks can’t give me a #00 load for the 28 gauge. I know the 20 Gauge is certainly a load where the shotgun starts showing promise in self-defense, and I know I would not trust my life to a .410, there’s a split in there somewhere, I don’t know where the 28 rides that split.
Still given that 28 Gauge is 0.55 Caliber, unless they can get an ATF exemption for hunting and sporting, I suspect it would be an NFA item. Since the gun in the video is a prototype, I suspect its either a publicity stunt, or they are waiting on the ATF.
Don’t go stocking up on 28 Gauge shells, is what I say!

If my basic firearm needs were satisfied; I would buy one in a heartbeat.
I think everyone needs a couple of “Oh, Yah? Have you tried THS?” type of guns.
If nothing else store owners will buy them in vast quantities. The criminal looking into a bore that size will have to be stupid or high to continue with the robbery.
I agree….stunt, and a silly one at that
Since I like stupid gun stuff, and i love collecting stamps –
The bight side- if this were marketed, it would likely be NFA. Since the NRA looooves pimpin’ those judges, maybe there is a prayer they NRA would do something about NFA ? That’s probably unlikely…
It could get an NFA exemption if it were particularly sporting. I don’t know what sport you would use it for, well maybe a hog measuring contest, or a race to empty the wallet…
The more likely side – this would be classified into the most restrictive category. In this case it would be a DD, not AOW. DDs are real ballbusters to transfer since ATF likes to sell those $3000 DD-dealer FFLs. They will let an 01 or 07 transfer maybe one or two a year.
You want a big pain it the rear ? start looking for DD dealers / mfgs / importers, in your state (cant go out of state for this) who would even talk to you. Youd find a list like Alliant, BAE, Northrop Grumman… not exactly many dealers who would work with a walk in.
And, there are NO slugs available in 28ga. None. Nowhere. At one point, I made a subcal adapter for a guy to go from 14.5x114russian to 28ga. It came out great. Do you know what sucked? Shooting birshot out of a PTRD.
If the judge were 20ga, well, maybe I could see adding one to the pile!
Heh, I never thought of your hobby as philately! 😀 I imagine if this starts selling well the 28 ga loads will expand a LOT, and there will be many optimized for short barrels (same as .410)
An incrementalist approach could be the NRA climbing on board to broaden the “Sporting exemption” of the NFA. If we could get a HUMUNGUS 28 ga DA revolver as an exempted “Sporting Arm” the flood gates might open at crippling the BS that is the NFA.
