Definition of CUNNING
: dexterous or crafty in the use of special resources (as skill or knowledge) or in attaining an end [a cunning plotter]
: displaying keen insight [a cunning observation]
: characterized by wiliness and trickery [cunning schemes]
: prettily appealing : cute [a cunning little kitten]

I believe we are dealing with definition #4, which is the most common usage in Maine.

    Cute as a button, both of them….cunning as a substitute for cute is definitely a New Englandism, I’ve never heard of it.
