So-Po Man hits it big

You don’t need to be a dating expert to be smooth in the business of matchmaking.

South Portland native Chris Coyne, left, hangs out in 2008 with Sam Yagan, one of the other founders of an online dating site.

Just ask Chris Coyne, the South Portland native who co-founded OkCupid.com. In its seven years, the online dating site has attracted millions of members and the attention of a multinational corporation, IAC, which bought OkCupid last month for $50 million.

Coyne, 33, who now lives on the Upper West Side of New York City, said he struggled with dating in high school.

I was a year behind Chris, and we were on Swim Team and Tennis Team together. (OK he was a diver, but we were all pretty-much the same outfit back then). He was a really quiet guy so we weren’t close, but I can’t say anything bad about him. What I can say is he was a brilliant Math Student, taking advanced high school (shit a Math dullard like I took in college) and generally had his business together.

And I guess it paid off, didn’t it!

Go Chris! Glad to hear you’re doing well!

Well that’s cool- my daughter was a swimmer. She swam for the Wilton Wahoos and did tons of regionals and nats. She was clocking close to Olympic times in the mid-80s then one day *boing* she got chest that just killed her times. Her coach told her if she wanted to try for the Olympics she would have to go for breast reduction surgery- she did some soul searching and realized she probably could not pull the times even so.

Her teammate on the Wahoos was Janel Jorgenson who won gold at the Pan-American games and a silver at the 88 Olympics. Until her chest popped it was always a toss up if she or Janel would win when they swam against each other.

As for divers… hehehehe…. my daughter would snort and call them prima donnas.
