Violent Crime down….AGAIN!

The number of violent crimes reported to police decreased 3.8 percent last year to 1.2 million, the fifth straight year of declines, the FBI announced Monday.

Meanwhile, the total number of property crimes reported to law enforcement agencies went down by 0.5 percent to 9 million, the ninth consecutive year that figure has fallen. Property crimes resulted in estimated losses of $156.6 billion.

The latest declines mark the continuation of a nearly two-decade drop in crime levels – a trend that almost no one in the field of criminology predicted, said Professor John Caulkins of Carnegie Mellon Heinz College. The trend, said Caulkins, is a reflection of a range of many factors, including policing practices.

I thought guns caused violence? All these guns we’re buying must be defective!

I recall that someone mentioned that demographically we should have been expecting the drop as the average age of the population gets higher.

We can thank that boomers for not having as many kids as their parents, apparently.

  2. Bob S. says:

In Texas there have been more reports of thugs being shot trying to rob/burglar homes.

I’m not saying there is a correlation nor am I saying there is a causal relationship.
I am saying Thugs aren’t dumb and they see the news and attend the funerals.

There certainly seems to be a consistent (tho at times small) trend of lesser violent crime in areas where lethal force used defensivly against violent crime is more common.

certainly with gun culture 2.0 in full swing many of the guns being bought are NOT for the harvesting of ducks and deer, but for lawful self defense.

I doubt this information is the only factor in this story, but I would be very surprised to hear these facts had no bearing on this story.
