Talk about a law that makes no sense. Unless you realize that the NFA was originally set to ban handguns, the SBR rule seems like a vestigial tail.
Yep, NFA was originally intended to restrict Machine Guns (because Rum Runners were stealing machine guns from the cops and the army and killing other rum-runners with them…good job guys!), artillery pieces (because you can’t use a .55 Boys to hunt deer!), Bombs, and concealable guns.
The handguns got removed but the SBRs and SBSs stayed in…also suppressors got added because the game wardens were worried that starving people in the depression-era ghettos might hunt animals illegally so they could eat, and can’t have poor people starving!
NFA is like every other fucking gun law, its bullshit, its pointless, and it was built on lies.

Attaching a stock to a handgun makes it so much scarier–after all, if you want to conceal one, you’d have to wear a scary black raincoat. Instead of spraying a safe hail of bullets all over the place, the person holding the gun can hit one target easier. And, of course, only frightening people apply for the paperwork on these things.
Now where are those NIH and CDC forms for the doughnut that I want to eat for lunch?
