Fake Problem Supported With Fake Data

So Joan is going on a screed again about carry permit holders.

Starting September 1st, Texas permit holders need many fewer hours of actual hands-on training with an actual gun to get an actual permit to carry an actual loaded gun in public places….Listen up everybody. If this change brings in more business while sending novices out on our streets with loaded guns, it is, as I have said before, a cynical move to make us less safe, not more safe. We can’t afford to have novices floundering in public with a loaded gun….So that’s it in a nutshell. This is not about public safety at all. This is about the corporate gun lobby’s promoting business and the purchase of more guns. This is about people not being able to stay awake for a 10 hour class. This is about protecting yourself from the government. This is about what some people claim is an unrestricted right to do whatever they please with their guns. This is about making sure the “good guys” get their guns and permits. What nearby states have looser requirements for getting a permit to carry, by the way, just out of curiosity? Arizona requires no training. Oklahoma allows Open Carry but this article talks about New Mexico and Nevada requiring no permits to carry. And so this is really about “dumbing down” towards the least restrictive laws to carry guns instead of thinking about public safety. It’s got to be more convenient not to sit through training or even get any training at all. And the number of gun deaths in these neighboring states? Texas=11/100,000. Arizona= 18/100,000. New Mexico= 16.6/100,000. Oklahoma=13.1/100,000. Nevada= 17.3/100,000. Louisiana=19.5/100,000. And then how about, say, California where laws are much more strict? Gun deaths=9.8/100,000. So far, Texas has fewer gun deaths than most other nearby states. So it makes perfect sense to emulate those states, right? And if this law passed in Texas, you can bet that the corporate gun lobby will be bringing it to a state near you.

So there’s her problem. More states are relaxing or outright dropping their carry permit laws, and her response is “Gun Death”.

Let’s double-check that with the bullshit detector. Oh when we step away from the arbitrary “Gun Death” rate and just go by people killed by any means illegally suddenly the numbers go all over the place.

Further look at that bottom, we have Hawaii, but then just above New Hampshire and Vermont. Further Her beloved California is LESS safe than Texas…which is the opposite she claims.

Really we can play all sorts of number games here. Just look at no-permit needed Wyoming and Alaska and where they fall compared to various anti-gun capital ships.

Still this is why they cling to “Gun Death” and why I spend so much time taking it away from them.

  1. Jens says:

By her “reasoning” it’s be perfectly all right to stab someone or bash their head in, whereas a carry permit gives the owner full immunity when “hunting humans”.
IIRC Tam expressed it best – Joan not only has issues, she has subscriptions. Whatever medication she’s on should be banned (tongue firmly in cheek).

  2. Archer says:

I have to assume she’s including accidents, suicides, and justified homicides (aka “Good Shoots”) in the “Gun Death” numbers (again).

How else would Texas, with an overall murder rate of 4.4/100k, have a “Gun Death” rate of 11/100k – 2.5 times the overall murder rate?

In her deranged mind, those suicide “Gun Deaths” are surely sorry they used a gun instead of another, more politically-correct method. She must truly believe that those who auto-asphyxiate or intentionally overdose or leap from high places are “less dead” than those who use firearms, as if “level of death” were a spectrum (“‘Gun Death’ goes to 11; that’s, like, one more!”) instead of binary.
