“Gun Death” Boat Propeller

This is HORRIBLE!

A University of Virginia student has been killed by a boat propeller while snorkeling off a Caribbean island for a ‘Semester at Sea’ program.

Casey Schulman, 22, died on Saturday on the tiny island nation of Dominica when the boat she and other students had hired backed over her.

Now when I read the headline I thought about the law here in the States where you cannot dive without a dive flag, so boats know not to travel over where divers are. This isn’t one of those cases, this is gross negligence.

Aren’t you glad she wasn’t shot?

That’s terrible. But that kind of thing is a known hazard, and it’s why my rescue squad’s dive boat has an impeller-type outboard motor instead of the usual propeller. The entire purpose of the boat means that it will be working in dangerously close proximity to active divers and possibly people who have been injured.
