The original Pirates! by Sid Meier was for the Sega Genesis, and was one of my all-time favorite games. The PC version you link here I never enjoyed as much as the original, although the graphics were better, of course.
I enjoyed the original and the remake of Pirates! I replayed the original a few years ago. I gave up after a day of playing when I made more money running sugar back and forth between two islands a screen apart than I would have pursuing the plot line, and realized I enjoyed that more than the plot. I wish there were a free-roam type game where you could trade or pirate.
That’s what all Sandbox games are…they all generally have a plot, but you don’t have to follow them if you see anything shiny.
Both Pirates! games were Sandboxes, as are all the Grand Theft Auto games….or my personal fave, Endless Ocean.
So there are lots of those….but there should be more.
I agree that sandboxes have a plot (and that there should be more). I just wish that you had a free roam mode in any of the Pirates! games. You can age out of effective play in the game, and not pursuing the plotline does affect your final score.
I think the newer remake of Pirates! gives you a lot more latitude of play.

Get the game, you can run a controler while rocking the baby cairer with one foot. I spent a lot of time playing GTA while my kid was sleeping.

Find the Pyrates Royale CDs… play them while playing…..

Very easy to remember the song when its 3 am and you’ve been up working all day.
Pirates! and Pirates! Gold….still play them on the PC.
