“Gun Death” Drowning

A Sad One:

A former champion kickboxer has drowned in mysterious circumstances after apparently falling off his boat on a day trip with his two young children.

Mark Selbee, 45, went overboard and didn’t resurface after taking his brand new boat out onto Hillsdale Lake in Miami County, Kansas.

…A fisherman later found the unmanned motorboat with the two children on board.

…It is not clear whether he fell off the boat or went for a swim and got into difficulty.

One interesting note is that somebody in THAT good a shape might find themselves in trouble easier than somebody of average build in the water. People that are all muscle with low body fat sink like rocks, and can cramp up keeping all that ballast above water. Just speculation, it’s a really sad story given that the kids were on the boat when their father disappeared.

Wear life jackets!

  1. Old NFO says:

Yep, low body fat does cause problems, and there is NOTHING unmanly about wearing a life jacket…

    • Weerd Beard says:

When I’m in a small open boat I actually prefer one. It’s the ONLY instance where an insulating layer over your core while leaving your arms and stomach exposed is the perfect comfort level.

Plus it might save your life. Of course NFO knows about these, but automatic CO2 inflated PFDs are so small they add no bulk or heat retention but the moment you hit the drink you suddenly are VERY buoyant.
