How Do you Carry?

This is a neat little post from Tam:

There’s a certain level of comfort associated with carrying the same gun.

I used to definitely do the whole “If it’s Tuesday, I must be carrying the Luger” thing. And I understand the desire, even if you’re carrying concealed, to have something cool-looking or pretty on, whether anyone else can see it or not. If people weren’t like that, they’d sell nothing but tighty-whities and granny panties in stores and Joe Boxer and Vickie’s Secret would be long out of business.

I just don’t do the CCW as fashion statement anymore. I haven’t for a while. I change carry guns only marginally more frequently than the country changes presidential administrations. I sometimes miss the “Whatcha carryin’ today?” easy conversation starter among fellow gun nuts (“Same gun I’ve been carrying since you’ve known me, why?”) but maybe the time savings from not having to select a gun and holster in the morning is worth it.

I’ve never been one for the “Firearm Fashion Show”, I have three carry guns. S&W1911Sc in a Shoulder holster if I’m out and about for the day and can wear and appropriate cover garment. Kahr PM45 in a DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster if I can’t conceal the 1911, quick trips around town, or I think I’ll be rolling around on the floor with my daughter where the 1911 just digs into my ribs. Ruger LCR .357 if I want something lighter than the PM45, or I feel I can better carry the reload for the LCR how I’m dressed. It’s that simple. Also I have a S&W642 that I never carry anymore. It’s a great gun, but the LCR does everything it does, but better. The 642 is just a backup for my backup.

For pocket knives I often do do the “Fashion Show”, but I’m finding that to be more rutted than it was in the past. Now I tend to just carry my CRKT Carajas, which has essentially supplanted the CRKT Premonition for much the same reasons as the LCR supplanted the 642.

So how do you all roll?

XDS 45 (plus reload) and a DPX Hest Triple Black everyday.

In the boondocks nobody gets their panties in a wad over the sight of a gun. I mostly have the luxury of being able to go sincerely OC, so I carry a beater Taurus .44 in a cut-down Fobus. Reloads are on speed strips in a belt pouch. If I’m going to the city and need to cover up, I have a SA 1911 in an IWB Galco. If I’m really concerned about it being spotted sometimes I’ll carry a little PA-63 but it’s not my favorite gun. If I’m spending an evening with friends where I don’t need to cover up but don’t feel like carrying the hand-cannon, sometimes I’ll swap the Taurus for a Russian Mak in a Fobus. My every-day knife is a Gerber Freeman Hunter in a nice leather sheath my neighbor made, but sometimes in the city I carry a Benchmade folder.

    Yeah, about the same.

I have a S&WE 1911 for my main carry gun, with my PM45 as a backup or if I don’t have a cover, ect.

Then I have an LCP for jogging/exercise/yardwork basically whenever you need a smaller weight.

For knives I’ve recently converted to a Quatermaster Templeton and a letherman wingman. Now I do have a Quatermaster Higgins as a “bbq knife” so there is that.

S&W 640 Pro in a pocket holster. I prefer the stainless over the airweight J frames and the Trijicons are nice. I recently acquired a 9mm shield but I don’t have a holster for it yet.

Should I feel ashamed that I carry my J-frame 642 in my pocket all through winter, too, not changing to a winter gun–let alone winter ammo–as the gun forums oh so often talk about? As for the knife, it’s pretty much only been that CRKT M16 I won from one of Linoge’s raffles a couple years ago, at least until the past couple weeks when I picked up a Cold Steel Mini something or another for the simple reason that it was lime green (shit, now I really need to turn in my gun forums tacticool credentials card).

Douk-douk or Mercator knives, mostly. Not a handgun owner yet, but am leaning to LCR or LCRx.

I change on a whim. I know it’s not conventionally accepted to switch between different guns, and operating systems, but… what the hell. I know them, use them, and trust them.

They’re your guns, carry them how you want.

My statement is that I’d be concerned say drawing a 1911 and thinking it was an M&P and forget to swipe the safety, ect. Still I don’t know how valid it would be. If you’ve logged time with the gun you will probably just run it without thinking.
