Obama isn’t Coming For Your Guns

That’s what the antis say. And indeed they’re liars!

Speaking to users of the blogging platform Tumblr, President Obama today praised Australia’s confiscation of firearms. Obama said:

” Couple of decades ago, Australia had a mass shooting, similar to Columbine or Newtown. And Australia just said, well, that’s it, we’re not doing, we’re not seeing that again, and basically imposed very severe, tough gun laws, and they haven’t had a mass shooting since.

Our levels of gun violence are off the charts. There’s no advanced, developed country that would put up with this.”

In other words, the president of the United States just praised a government for forcefully removing all semi-automatic firearms (i.e. a remarkable number of the guns in America and the majority of those sold today) from its citizenry.

Now will he succeed? I doubt it, but we’ll sure fight hard just to make sure he knows how foolish this move is.

Other-country utopias, is that it? My cousin lived for years in Barking near London. She never had a serious problem, although London is nowhere near a crime- and violence-free utopia. No guns, though. Berlin’s train stations in the late 1980s and early 1990s were, from personal experience, gun-free nests of drug-addled thieves and whores from every dump in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. My personal guess is the “threshold of chutzpah” (that’s my made-up term) to commit property and violent crimes is probably pretty low in Europe. You simply needn’t fear a response from a disempowered citizenry. If you’re an angry Jamaican or Ruthenian who wants to slap the washroom attendant for a few Euros, who’s to stop you?

By contrast, there’s the local bus station in the busted-up Midwestern city where I work. Hardscrabble passengers, mostly. But, no pickpockets or hookers working the chumps, and, in general, no hassle. Why? There’s a street-wise cop with a sidearm there who’s willing to carefully assert his authority when he needs to. Plus, Ohio’s CCW laws make it at least a possibility there’s an armed citizen there, too. Duh!

Except the most advanced and developed country in the world. Why would we want to emulate second best? Or tenth from the top?

Plus it’s “Gun Violence”. No honest American cares what kind of murders are trending over others. We want SAFETY, not “low ‘Gun Death'”.

Scotland is the most dangerous country in the Western world when it comes to violent crime. Just the preferred weapons of mayhem are knives, clubs, hands and feet.

But the anti-gun people would rather deal with yobs, muggers, and gangs in Glasgow, than Florida where things are safer, but a lot of people get shot. (and many of them deserve it)

Not to mention that were it not for violent crimes committed by, for the most part, 18-35 year old black males in cities already dominated by leftist policies, U.S. violent crime rates would be a fraction of what they are.

Of murders where race was known in 2011, FBI UCR over half were committed by blacks. If one looks at homicide death rates by firearm for men ages 14-35, the rate is 68.22 per 100K for black men and only 6.99 for white men in that age group. For men (all races, hispanic origin) it’s 17.93. which is curious since poverty rates are almost identical for blacks and hispanics.

This holds true in DE as well. Black homicide rates by firearm are 10-12 times higher than for whites.

Now. if instead of homicide by gun being at these rates, imagine if inner city black men killed people and were dying at a rate closer to that of white men. Total U.S. homicide rates and gun homicide rates would be several orders of magnitude lower.

The U.S. doesn’t have a violence problem. We don’t have a gun violence problem. We have an inner city black homicide problem. The problem? Culture.

mike w., thanks for bringing up non-PC stuff.. The city where I work is maybe 50% black, and has seen its homicide rate decline from about 50 per 100,000 overall about 15-20 years ago to about 10 per 100,000 overall now if current trends hold.

I’ll guess at some reasons. (1) Attrition among high-recidivism criminals–death, overdose death, and incarceration, (2) aggressive Federal prosecution of corrupt (and mostly white) judges who were bought by mostly black gang-bangers, (3) aggressive task-force organized law enforcement against gang-bangers, (4) anti-violence protests by law-abiding folks, mostly black, which let police know that residents wanted aggressive law enforcement, and (5) liberalized Ohio CCW laws. Probably other factors, too.

By “liberalized Ohio CCW laws” I mean ordinary citizens lawfully using firearms to thwart crimes against them. The pizza delivery guy who shot his way out of an abduction. The elderly war vet crossing the street who used his war relic (P 08?) against a thug. At least a half-dozen or more high-profile CCW and home defense cases in the last year or so in the metro area, well-reported by local media, in which prosecutors explained why they declined to prosecute the CCW and home defense folks. Anti-gunners ought to back off any attempt to lump together lawful killing with unlawful killing.

Free tip: if you have a knack for writing, write your local county prosecutor about why you support his most recent exoneration of a CCW/home defense shooter. You do need the writing bug, you need to be restrained (the prosecutor’s likely to be nervy), but you’ll likely have some startling influence.

Australia is a nice place so I hear. However there are places where the protest over the sharp increase in violence you want to stay away from.

While the likelihood of being shot is only little lower, stabbed clubbed, hit, bludgeoned, or mugged are way way up.

Gun violence is a sad joke. A narrow and much lied number that has little to do with reality and far from truth.

    As usual, Obama lies.

Australia already HAD “tough gun laws”, and they didn’t prevent Port Arthur from happening.

Imagine California, with added bans on military-style rifles, and may-issue purchase permits and registration of EVERYTHING (including air guns, flare guns, and paint markers). That was the PREVIOUS situation.

The NEW laws added: bans on all semi-auto rifles, bans on semi and pump shotguns, magazine limits, caliber restrictions, and forced confiscation of formerly legal property.

None of which Obama will tell you.

Interestingly, I visited Port Arthur recently. Everyone on the tour was directed NOT to mention the shootings to the staff at the Visitor Center. When my son asked why, I told him, “It’s because they would freak out if they were reminded how the government insists on leaving them powerless to stop it happening again.”

The tour guide was not best pleased.

Now if we could only get Obama to move there…..and take Congress, news organizations, Brady Bunch, Bloomberg, and a few others who agree with him

    …Oh, did I mention Congress?
