“Gun Death” Rock Climbing

A sad one:

A yoga instructor fell to his death while he climbed alone in Yosemite National Park on Saturday – just after his girlfriend had accepted his proposal.

…He added that he believes his son could have been tired after climbing Cathedral Peak and then running to the Crest.

The guy was big into fitness, surfing, and rock climbing, but every man has his limits, and rock climbing is dangerous stuff.

So what do we ban? Rock climbing? Excessive exercise?

Ah screw it, just fixate on “Gun Death” and ban guns! Makes sense, right?

“Gun Death” New York City

Just look at this story!

A drunken commuter stabbed and wounded three men with a knife as he got off a subway train arriving at New York’s Grand Central Terminal early on Saturday morning, police said.

…The argument escalated on the subway platform as **REDACTED** slashed and stabbed at the three men with a folding knife, wounding one in his arm, another in his stomach and the third in his chest, Markowski said.

So in New York City guns are essentially banned…so are folding knives. Of course that doesn’t mean you’re safer, it DOES mean that the monsters out there will have less fear pulling this kind of crap.

Why do we focus on “Gun Death”?

Evening Music: Mad Caddies

Was listening to the Mad Caddies on the stereo. LaWeer’da loves them, as do I, but surprisingly the wife and Mother-in-law both flipped over this one.

And one more won’t hurt, will it?

All Laws Are Deadly

It’s a common thing when running in libertarian circles to hear about “Malum prohibitum” and “Malum in se” laws. Respectively they speak of laws that go against a behavior because it has been declared “Prohibited” vs. laws that target behavior because it is “evil”.

For example laws against rape and murder are there because murder and rape are horrible evil crimes.

Meanwhile consenting prostitution, recreational drugs, magazines holding more than X bullets and cigarette taxes are laws because society has decided they should be prohibited when really there are no victims in these crimes.

The Daily Show went after Rand Paul for noting this:

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) even blamed cigarette taxes.

“What the fuck are you talking about?” Stewart asked after hearing Paul’s remarks. “Well I guess now we know what it takes for a senator from Kentucky to admit cigarettes can kill.”

I have mixed feelings about Eric Garner’s death. Like all death, be it Mr. Garner, or Trayvon Martin, or Michael Brown, or countless others, it’s sad when something ends in deadly force. My sadness for Brown and Martin only goes so far. They both were violent criminals involved in a criminal culture, and chances are if George Zimmerman, or Officer Wilson hadn’t shot them when they did, they probably would have been shot by somebody else. Eric Garner isn’t too different as he was a frequent scofflaw of the law, and some of those past convictions were violent ones.

I am NOT AN ANARCHIST! We NEED police to enforce our laws. Also we need police to enforce ALL our laws, just and unjust. The solution to unjust laws is to REPEAL them, not fight them on the streets. Eric Garner was committing a crime, and then further he chose to resist arrest when caught.

I don’t know enough, even watching the video of Mr. Garner’s last moments if the force was excessive, or even if the officers caused his death any more than the exertion of fighting with the cops. Mr. Garner was severely overweight and had a heart condition, it isn’t unreasonable to think that if he had started sparing at the local martial arts dojo and his partner took extra care not to hurt him, he might have died there as well.

Resisting arrest is a SERIOUS crime. Police are required to enforce the law, and they can’t just stop doing their job because a suspect acts like a toddler and simply says “No!”. Now if you are detained by police you might help yourself a LOT by keeping your mouth shut. There are certainly cases where people were arrested, jailed, or imprisoned because they told the cops information that was beneficial to their case. Still once the police say “You’re under arrest, put your hands behind your back!” the time to fight any injustice is NOT THERE. Resisting arrest after this point will only make things worse for you.

Still the bottom line is ALL LAWS ARE POTENTIALLY DEADLY. You sell black market cigarettes, or speed in your car, or shoplift penny candy from the local drug store, it could lead to your death either by police mistaking your actions for more dangerous ones, or from resisting arrest to the point where the force becomes deadly.

If cigarettes weren’t taxed to such a stupid level in New York Eric Garner might still be dead, but he wouldn’t have been killed for THIS crime.

Joan Touches the Third Rail that is Ferguson

Many bloggers have noticed that most of the anti-gun groups have stayed away from the Ferguson riots. Joan Peterson of Protect Minnesota and the Brady Campaign is not one of those.

It’s easy to see why the antis elected NOT to comment on this topic:

And finally, I can’t not write about what happened in Ferguson, Missouri after the failure of the grand jury to indict a white police officer who shot and killed Michael Brown, a black unarmed teen-ager. We may disagree about the evidence so far released about how things went down that fateful August day.

What Joan is disagreeing with is HARD evidence. Things like surveillance footage, autopsy reports, medical treatment records, and blood splatter analysis. She chooses to ignore all that for dubious eyewitness reports that match none of the evidence collected at the scene. She chooses to do that because the anti-rights people want common criminals like Treyvon Martin and Michael Brown to be heroes so they can use their deaths for their self-centered political gain.

But there are some facts that are hard to dispute. Young black males are arrested in greater numbers than other young males. There have been more shootings of young black males by police officers than other young males. More black teens died of gunshot injuries than the same population of white teens in 2012, the year of the Sandy Hook shooting. The writer of this article points out the difference in how the media treats the gun deaths of people of color from that of white people. She has a point and the media should examine their own views about racial disparity when writing about violent incidents.

Of course Joan is ignoring the bigger picture, violent crime is DOWN in America while gun ownership and concealed carry is up. It seems that violence in general is a problem within the black population. She of course ignores the big picture for a calculated reason. GUNS ARE NOT THE ISSUE! If guns were the issue we would be seeing an overall rise in violent crime as gun ownership increases. One big issue is gangs, who as a general rule have guns, but not legally so. The antis are never for enforcing the laws on the books, they are for adding new laws. Her proposed solution is to “Protect” Blacks from violence we need to disarm the general population…but the numbers indicate this would only INCREASE violent crime.

Again, she pretends to care about lives, all she cares about are guns. It gets worse:

We have a serious problem in our country with racial disparity when it comes to arrests, convictions, and imprisonments. We have a serious problem with relationships between law enforcement and people of color going back decades in America. We have institutional racism in America that is spilling out in politics, in incidents involving violence, in our social, economic and education systems and in our justice system. The communities of color are hurting in many ways that most of us who are not living in their communities can not possibly understand.

She links this article:

The term “institutional racism” describes societal patterns that have the net effect of imposing oppressive or otherwise negative conditions against identifiable groups on the basis of race or ethnicity.

…Examples:

-Opposing public school funding is not necessarily an act of individual racism; one can certainly oppose public school funding for valid, non-racist reasons. But to the extent that opposing public school funding has a disproportionate and detrimental effect on minority youth, it furthers the agenda of institutional racism.

-Most other positions contrary to the civil rights agenda–opposition to affirmative action, support for racial profiling, and so forth–also have the (often unintended) effect of sustaining institutional racism.

So opposing school funding is racist? Except that school funding has nothing to do with school performance! Throwing money at poor schools doesn’t have any effect in the performance of those schools. We have a word for that in the reality-based world: WASTE!

Also affirmative action possibly (but arguably) made sense when there were huge racial biases in the career fields. Now when you go and see a new doctor are you surprised to see a black person? The same goes for the dude driving a mop in your place of business. Are you surprised if you see a white person? Now the proponents for affirmative action may spin numbers that such-and-such races aren’t represented in such-and-such projected numbers. Still if you work in the medical or scientific field (chosen because that’s where I work) the faces are disproportionately Asian. This has become such a trend in many fields that affirmative action quotas have started treating Asian people as “Whites”. This goes against all the claims of racism in the system, as Asians look different than whites. The issue is cultural, not racial. To somehow claim that somebody is somehow handicapped because of their color is nothing more than racist at it’s heart!

The other problem we have in America is the militarization of our law enforcement not seen in most countries not at war. Since 9-11 that has increased out of fear of being attacked again by extremists. This only serves to increase the tension between citizens and the police. In Ferguson, we saw police outfitted in riot gear and “storm trooper” like uniforms. The rioters last night in Ferguson were wrong in their actions. They were understandably angry and frustrated. Michael Brown’s family called for peaceful protests but that did not happen. Mistakes were made on both sides that led to further looting, rioting, violence, burning and civil unrest. What happened last night is a symbol of the underlying tensions in America about race and also about guns and violence.

And where did the militarized police come from? This is entirely from the action of the anti-gunners. The cops have machine guns, grenade launchers, and military vehicles, stuff that I can’t legally buy. Why? Because they’ve been exempted from every major gun control law ever passed. The anti-gun argument has always been “COPS NEED THESE ITEMS TO DO THEIR JOBS!”, now they’re squealing that cops shouldn’t have these items. Antis caught in a lie again!

As for the Brown family calling for a “Peaceful Protest”, nope:

But more guns is not the answer. Violence causes more violence. And mistrust of those who are different from us spawns suspicion and trouble. Police officers are heavily armed and often face heavily armed citizens in some communities in our country. It’s a vicious circle.

Pack of lies! First up, “Guns are not the answer”?? Tell that to the people who’s businesses were spared because armed people volunteered their time to protect them from the looters! Also “Violence causes more violence”? Can you cite ONE instance where the civilian guards needed to discharge their weapons protecting private property? Catchy phrase, but it just isn’t true.

Also note that the antis claim you don’t NEED a gun because police will protect you. This riot was predicted and prepared for for WEEKS, and yet still buildings burned. Do you think you will fare any better in a one-off crime? The people of Ferguson and everywhere else have no recourse if the police fail to protect them. You need to protect yourself!

Same goes for the cops being heavily armed because the criminals are heavily armed. Sorry, but there are almost no crimes being committed with long guns. Police have the firearms and equipment they do for two reasons #1. They’re the best tools for the job, and the sadder #2 is because they have been authorized to have certain equipment, they elect to acquire that stuff and then work to justify it’s use. It’s really not black and white. I don’t think most towns should have a SWAT team, and I don’t like seeing police officers in military fatigues with full-auto weapons responding to what are routine calls, or running no-knock raids on what are petty drug dealers. Still I think it would be foolish to issue police arbitrarily restricted guns like the general public was saddled with during the federal assault weapons ban.

And interesting that she lied about the Brown family’s requests before the buildings started burning, as well as the reasons for police having certain guns, before she cites a “vicious circle”.

She’s a liar and a panderer, and she does it for her own personal political gain. She’s also sickly racist. You can see why some of the smarter antis stayed away from this topic.

Images of the Antis: Straw Man

The antis claim to understand what we’re thinking:

Peace on Earth

No, we’re not celebrating “Peace on Earth”, we’re recognizing that there are riots and mobs, home invasions and robberies, and just like the Ferguson police were unable to keep stores and cars from being destroyed from an imminent riot they had weeks to prepare for, they likely won’t be able to protect you.

Also this isn’t fear or paranoia, as Americans are buying more and more guns, and people continue to buy their first gun, while violent crime drops, and stores protected by armed citizens didn’t burn in Ferguson.

Now there IS something to celebrate. We live in a nation where private citizens are trusted with personal arms. We are not REQUIRED to wait for police and other government agents to protect us, we can protect ourselves while we call the police.

This is a reality the antis hate. If it wasn’t true they could take our guns with ease!

“Gun Death” Homeless Beating

There are monsters among us:

Three Albuquerque teenagers pleaded not guilty on Friday to charges of first-degree murder in the beating deaths of two homeless American Indian men that shocked New Mexico’s biggest city.

…Police say the three teenagers set about the homeless men after finding them sleeping in an abandoned lot, beating them with kicks, punches, iron bars and cinder blocks.

According to a criminal complaint filed by a detective, one of the teenagers confessed to officers they had beaten more than 50 people in random attacks over the past year. They are being held on $1 million bond each.

It wasn’t done for money, or even out of malice. Doesn’t even seem to be racially motivated. Just some feral humans out to beat in the heads of other people for sport!

Sorry but this is why I carry a gun. If you want to beat me for sport, I won’t fight back, I’ll just kill you to protect my life.

Of course fixating on “Gun Death” is a means to remove my means of protection, while ignoring case like this because they are not convenient.

UK Knife Philosophies Come to America

Don’t think the anti-gun people are really anti-gun. They are anti-freedom, and if they made all guns vanish from America they wouldn’t even slow down:

In this era of search-happy security, carrying a knife isn’t just an anachronism; it’s a terrible idea. So let’s retire the term pocketknife, along with the practice it implies. Instead, meet the stay-at-home knife, an all-purpose blade for every place but your trousers.

Oh the idiocy! I feel positively naked without a good knife in my pocket. It’s one of those tools that once you figure out how often you might need one every day, you never want to be without one.

Also given that carrying a gun is NOT something you can do everywhere, it also can be a force multiplier that might save your life.

To declare that dropping a knife in your pocket as a “Terrible Idea” is to go against humanity. We are tool users, and a knife is one of those basic tools you shouldn’t be without. Still in more “Civilized” places even a simple Swiss-army knife is considered a “Deadly Weapon” and will get you thrown in prison for stepping out your door with one on you. I once chatted with a subject of Australia who collected Swiss-Army knives. He kept them at home, and didn’t seem to see the irony of that. Yep a utility knife like the Swiss-Army knives kept only in the home is an exercise in stupidity. Hey you have a tiny blade, a crappy screwdriver, a cork screw, and some hard-to-use scissors….right next to your full-size knife, corkscrew, screwdriver set, power drill, and full-size shears!

Don’t think that if you aren’t a gun owner the people out there stripping my rights away won’t stop when they have my tools confiscated!

Hell, even in places like Massachusetts they’re calling for national gun control because even tho people in Mass are heavily restricted people in other states aren’t and people MIGHT choose to break the laws and bring guns across state lines. Do you think the people who propose this brand of “Logic” will simply say that you can’t carry a knife outside your home, but you can have one INSIDE your home? You might be tempted to BREAK THE LAW! The only solution is MORE LAWS!
