Anti-Rights and the Law

One thing the anti-rights fanatics are constantly crowing for is MORE LAWS!

They want bans, they want restrictions, they want arbitrary oversight, they want licenses, they want people they don’t like thrown in prison.

But there is another side to that.

This guy got tossed in jail despite the Firearms Owner Protection act.

It is still law in Massachusetts that all guns must be locked up if they are not under the immediate control of the owner. Now this is 100% illegal thanks to McDonald vs. Chicago, but there it is, still on the books waiting for some poor bastard to fight it with all his might.

Hell I was supposed to hear back from police if my permit was renewed or denied in no less than 30 calender days.

It was much closer to 120 (!!) days before my new permit arrived. Oh well, tough luck for me, and good that I never had to explain to and officer that technically that permit was still valid thanks to the 90 day grace period supplied upon renewal!

So while the anti-right cult calls for more laws, its not like they have the least respect for laws at all.

Let’s Talk Pee!

Interesting Video:

Now I have some issues with this conclusion. Finding bacterial DNA in urine doesn’t mean it isn’t sterile, as the toxic environment inside the bladder may KILL the bacteria, but still leave the DNA for detection. Also given the studies cited were done with women, let’s face it women wipe after #1 operations because they don’t produce as clean a urine stream as males so the possibility of cross contamination from the external skin is much higher.

Fun fact, dudes can write their name in the snow because there is a small twist at the end of the male urethra, much like some early rifled muskets where a small twist was added near the muzzle to impart some spin on the bullet.

Still the human body is teaming with bacteria, so the idea that the bladder would be one of the only sterile places (especially given that the stuff in there is going to be expelled anyway) seems plausible.

I don’t know the validity of washing out a cut, still if all you have is pee, and you have a VERY dirty gash you want to apply dressing to, a rinse with pee might not be the worst idea. For all the above talk, the bacteria in urine must be able to survive in a very acid, and fairly toxic environment, which is very different from say a gash on your leg. Clean water is still the best bet, but I don’t know if you can make an infection WORSE from a quick urine rinse.

Also the Jellyfish sting bit IS true! When a Jellyfish stings you its stinging cells called Cnidocytes pop open like little harpoon guns and release their poisons causing a sting. If the cells discharge OUTSIDE your body the damage is minimal. This is why you can safely handle animals like the Moon Jelly without any ill effects. They are stinging the bejesus out of you, but their cnida are not designed for something as big as a person so the toxin just splashes on the surface or injects into your protective outer skin cells that don’t feel pain.

So why pee on it? Well these cells get triggered by physical pressure, but they can also be caused to discharge by pH changes. The acid in your urine (or better yet some vinegar or even some leftover soda or orange juice) will cause all the Cnidocytes to discharge and wash away. Even when you pull the jelly off you it’s going to leave a bunch of cells on your body that will continue to sting. Acid (including urine) will cause this to stop.

Also urine is a waste product. It isn’t toxic waste, or as dangerous as feces, but it’s hardly good for you. Still like breathing exhaled air into a person’s lungs who’s stopped breathing will give them some much-needed oxygen, there is still some useful water in that urine, so if you are in immediate danger of dying of thirst saving and re-drinking your urine might give you a little more time to be saved.

Still the more you drink the pee and continue to live the more toxic it will become, and the less use you can make of it, so use EXTREME caution.

“Gun Death” Drunk Driving

Guns are different than cars because they are different!

A central Ohio man who drove drunk and killed a couple on a motorcycle and then laughed about it has been sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Would it have been any less brutal if the drunk had shot them to death?

Surviving a Gun Fight

Great Video:

I’m with him. My overall rules are similar. My Rules go as following:

Rule #1: Don’t get into a gun fight. If you can avoid getting in a fight in the first place, you’re in great shape! Better to be lucky than good, and even a situation where shots are exchanged the better man may not win!

Rule #2: Have a gun. This also goes for knife fights, and fist fights et al.

Rule #3: Have friends who have guns. Police call for backup, nice if you have backup too! So if you have friends or loved ones you are often with, maybe they should be armed too!

Rule #4: Proficiency. He’s right, having that $3000 1911 or $1500 H&K on your hip does shit if you can’t hit for crap, and the jerk with the stolen hi-point gets lucky.

Rule #5: Have a rifle. Doesn’t fit most scenarios, still if you find and angry mob bearing down on your house, or are driving around and crap gets real and you can’t continue, that rifle in the trunk or safe is MUCH better than the pistol on your hip.

More Cops Shooting Dogs

I’m getting sick of reading these kinds of stories:

The owner of a dog shot and killed by a Salt Lake City police officer last week released video of his initial confrontation with two other officers before finding his dog lying in his backyard.

…Police had been in the neighborhood searching for a missing three-year-old boy.

…Salt Lake City police spokesperson Robin Heiden said last week the officer had felt threatened enough to need to fire his weapon, but she declined to release more information until an internal affairs investigation is complete.

A local civil litigation attorney who has no connection to the case agreed discuss with 2News the legal issues in the case.

Did the officer legally enter Kendall’s property? Pankratz believes both parties could make a case for that question.

Under Utah and United States law, police generally need to have probable cause and a warrant to search a private property. However, the “exigent circumstance doctrine” allows certain exceptions, including missing child searches.

So while executing a missing child search police allegedly encountered a large dog acting aggressively while searching a fenced in yard, and shot and killed it.

I’m really not going to question the exact events of the shooting. Honestly it sounds very believable. Dogs can get aggressive when strangers enter their territory. Still why were police there in the first place? They didn’t have a warrant, at best they could have probable cause. But then there’s this little detail.

But did the officer actually believe the child was on that property, a block and a half from the boy’s home? He would later be found sleeping in his own basement.

The kid wasn’t there. He was at home sleeping under a box and some blankets according to other stories. So the missing child report seems legit, and I believe the dog would likely be defending his property, because that’s what dogs do.

But again, this problem all arises from why police entered the property in the first place. If you ask me this case REEKS of complacency of police and the 4th Amendment, and the upper level police brass not being very concerned with officers overstepping their boundaries.

Here’s the video the homeowner took of the confrontation with police after the smoke had cleared:

While I have every sympathy with the owner, I will note that dogs or any other animal are NOT people, and shouldn’t be treated as such. Also his assessment that the officers should have just retreated and shut the gate may not have been a valid course of action if the police accounts that the dog was VERY close are true.

One reason I carry a gun is in case of dangerous dogs, especially when I’m with my daughter. A dog can easily kill a baby before I could diffuse the situation, so if a dog is posing a likely threat to me or my baby I’m going to kill the damn thing as quickly as possible and let the chips fall where they may.

Still let’s get specific. There is a house near mine that I sometimes walk past that has a 100+ pound dog of some breed I’m unfamiliar with. This dog is VERY aggressive in his behavior, barking and growling without the standard tail wagging that shows he’s just defending his territory. When I see him he’s in a fenced-in yard, with an approximately 4″ fence.

My plan of action goes as following. When I pass this house I am ALWAYS on the opposite side of the street. This means I’m on the side without the sidewalk. I frequently have my hand on my gun the moment I see this dog is in the yard. Now that’s the end of it, but in the event that this dog jumps that fence (which he is certainly capable of doing) I’m going to engage him. Thankfully this hasn’t happened. Still this engagement will be on PUBLIC property, NOT in the owner’s backyard. If I was to be an asshole and jump the fence or open the gate I would EXPECT to get mauled by this dog, and it would be MY fault.

My issue is not with cops shooting a dog that was threatening them, or even cops searching for a missing child that wasn’t really missing. Instead it was cops entering private property under what appears to be VERY tenuous probable cause.

I’m sorry, police, but “Probable Cause” does not mean “Because I felt like it”, which is what this case really seems like at this moment.

What do you all think?

“Gun Death” Brutal Rape

No guns needed:

The ex-girlfriend of a man charged with raping and strangling a University of New Hampshire student in 2012 opened her testimony by answering the question: Who killed Elizabeth Marriott?

“Seth Mazzaglia,” she replied. “He strangled her with a rope.”

Kathryn McDonough, who is serving a prison sentence for lying to investigators about the student’s disappearance and death, took the stand Tuesday morning in Mazzaglia’s first-degree murder trial. Prosecutors say he raped and killed 19-year-old “Lizzi” Marriott of Westborough, Massachusetts, after she rebuffed his sexual advances.

This is the world anti-rights people who are constantly crowing about “Gun Death” want for us. A world where a more powerful man can rape and strangle a woman to death.

This is not a world I want!

You Might Be a Gun Nut if…

If THIS looks more useful for your hobby than dirty:

Gun Stuff

Yeah my gun bench looks kinda strange to outsiders.

Crisco for the Black powder revolver. Tampons for general cleaning, and gloves to keep your hands nice and clean.

Fine Motive, Bad Execution

This is an interesting story:

An Albuquerque father is facing a child endangerment charge after police say he left a loaded .22 caliber gun with his 11-year-old daughter for her protection while he went to get a tattoo.

Now this part doesn’t sound so bad. It all depends on the girl, whom information is not given. Has she any experience handling a gun? What’s her proficiency level? I’ve certainly known people who were safe and responsible shooters at this age, and I’ve certainly covered defensive gun use stories where a child this age has successfully and safely defended themselves with a gun when home alone. Also Mas Ayoob started carrying a gun in his father’s jewelry store around this age. Of course the story leads me to believe otherwise:

a neighbor spotted his daughter with the firearm at an apartment complex swimming pool.

Authorities say the girl didn’t threaten anyone with the gun, but told officers her dad left her the weapon for protection.

Grahhh! Still leaves a little room for interpretation but if Dad is so concerned about his daughter’s safety why was the gun the #1 line of defense??? Now I grew up anti-gun, still around this age, probably younger, my Mom switched from the ugly night shift at the hospital to the day shift. Elementary school let out a lot earlier than Dad’s school, so I would say goodby to my folks and watch TV until it was time to walk to school. I’d lock up and go to school. Then I’d come home, unlock the door with a key pinned to the inside of my book bag, and play inside until Dad got home a few hours later.

The rules were #1: Come home alone. No Friends. And Lock the door. If somebody rang the bell there was a window with translucent curtains near the door where I could see who was there without them seeing me. If I didn’t know them, don’t answer the door.

Now if somebody rang the bell to see if anybody was home, and if nobody answered then decided to break in, well I’d be in a pickle. I had a few things that could be used as weapons if I REALLY needed to, but a little kid with an aluminum baseball bat or a carving knife against an adult isn’t much. A gun might be nice.

Still if Dad was much more serious about safety he would have been better served to leave the gun (assuming the girl is safe and proficient in that arm) and tell her to leave the door locked and not answer it. If somebody FORCES their way into the home, well then it’s weapons hot time, and it would be hard to argue against that.

Still what was she doing at the pool? Just walking around? Was she going for a swim? What was she going to do with the gun if she hopped in the pool.

Just a bad idea from every angle I can game it out.
