“Gun Death” Chemist

Maybe I should be worried. While my wife keeps a .38 close at hand, what may be more dangerous is that she’s a CHEMIST!

A Chinese-born chemist who worked for a decade for one of America’s biggest pharmaceutical companies was a cold, calculating murderer who poisoned her husband rather than let him divorce her, a judge said Monday as he sentenced her to life in prison…Thallium has been banned for consumer use in the U.S. since 1972. It can be fatal in doses as small as a gram and has been called “the perfect poison” because it is difficult to detect in lab tests. It was initially suspected to be the toxin used in the 2006 fatal poisoning in London of former Russian KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko, but it was later determined he had ingested the rare radioactive isotope polonium-210.

Wang, 39, checked into Princeton Medical Center in January 2011 suffering from what appeared to be the flu or some other virus. He eventually lapsed into a coma and died on Jan. 26. Li was at her husband’s side in the hospital, even changing his bedpan, Altman pointed out to the judge.

Of course since my wife works in a Chemistry Lab she has access to such deadly chemicals. Should I be worried, or only concerned about “Gun Death”? Or maybe I should only be concerned if she suddenly has a desire to kill me?

Superintendent Brings Gun to School

I have mixed feelings about this story:

A school superintendent in North Dakota will resign after he says he took a gun to school to protect himself.

Tioga Superintendent D’Wayne Johnston said in an interview Wednesday that he brought the weapon to the high school on Oct. 2 because of a threat from a boy that resulted in the student’s expulsion. Johnston says he should have instead asked for more help from police.

Johnston refused to go into detail about the threat but says the boy had previous discipline problems.

After several people saw the gun, Johnston acknowledged carrying it.

First up, the rules are rules. Carrying a gun in this school is strictly prohibited, and whether you’re the superintendent or a janitor, the rules are the same. Still the idea of “Asking for more help from Police” is a little less comforting. Would they take it seriously, would they be there to protect? I can carry a gun all day every day, I can’t expect a full security detail from my local police.

Its my personal thought that if you legitimately feel your life is in danger, you should take all steps to reasonably protect yourself, be they legal or not (tho legal is always better, and legal and not against any private policy better still). He could have not gone to work, but I suspect that that would have only encouraged further misbehavior from other delinquents under his charge.

Better to be alive and looking for a job, than be dead or disabled. Still this story ends with neither. His gun was NOT discovered because he used it in self defense, it was just “seen by others”. This implies that he either wasn’t concealing it, or carrying it in a very crude method.

That’s a bad judgement call IMHO. I can understand somebody’s desire to carry against an employer’s wishes, especially given a direct threat, and I assume police WERE notified of whatever this threat was. Still one must weigh the risks of doing any action. I carry a quality gun in a safe but accessible holster. There of course is more of a risk of negative effects from my gun by carrying it vs. leaving it at home, but my assessment is that the benefits far out weigh the risks. Further if a person is carrying in a place where they could face legal or disciplinary actions for carrying, one must select the gun and method of carry VERY carefully that the risk of discovery outside of an actual defensive scenario is slim to none.

I don’t think that method was selected, and I’m so sorry that we live in place where a man is now out of work, despite committing no crimes, causing no harm, and all because he was threatened in the duties of his job.

We SHOULD live in a world where the school board apologizes for that situation happening and at WORST negotiation how they can better serve him in a way that he might be persuaded to leave his gun at home.

We don’t live in that world, and sadly I don’t see that changing in my lifetime.

“Gun Death” Hammer and Freezer

Two items I have right here in the Armory! DEADLY!

A 39-year-old Spanish man confessed Monday to killing his younger brother with a hammer, cutting up the body and putting the remains in the freezer after a tempestuous year of sharing the same home, police said….”Officers accompanied him to his home, where they found two freezers with bone and organic remains as well as sections of the body,” they said.

We must eliminate the deadly “Hardware Store Loophole!” Can you imagine the HORROR if every home had a hammer and a freezer?

The War on Drugs

As I’ve said before, the world would be a scary place if you could buy Heroin at every drug store, but I don’t think it would be as scary as the current War on Drugs.

So California Police are reduced to “Busting” special needs students whom they goaded into acquiring drugs illegally.

This is LITERALLY the War on Drugs version of taking candy from a baby.

MSM Then and Now

So I was fishing through Spotify while cooking dinner, and I found that Orson Welles’ production of War of the Worlds is available in full.

My excitement of this lead to the Mrs. and I spending more time talking about the significance of this story than actually listening to it. I’ll need to listen to it again later when I can give it the attention it deserves.

All this lead the Mrs. to ask: “I wonder what the modern media would need to do to incite a similar panic”.

I pointed out the news coverage of ANY of the modern “Breaking News” stories. We recently had an “Armed Gunman Attacking the White House”, we had “Multiple gunman at the Washington Navy Yard” and we had a “Full on Terrorist Strike at Fort Hood”.

The only difference between modern “News” and Welles’ dramatization was Welles apologized for the misunderstanding.

“Gun Death” Road Rage

No death, but also a lot of chaos and damage without a single gun:

An unidentified 33-year-old man was attacked in front of his wife and child in New York City after his vehicle reportedly was pursued by a gang of motorcyclists in a high-speed chase.

A video apparently taken by one of the bikers shows the gang surrounding the man’s Range Rover SUV on Manhattan’s West Side Highway Monday afternoon, the New York Post reports.

New York Police said the altercation began when the man called 911 to report the bikers driving erratically on the highway, NBC New York reports.

In the video, at least one biker is seen slowing down and parking his bike in front of the man’s vehicle, causing him to stop. Another biker began walking threateningly toward the vehicle before the driver gunned it and smashed into several bikes and riders.

The group then pursued the driver at high speeds until he got caught in traffic. At that point, another biker tried to rip open the SUV’s door, but the driver sped off again.

The chase came to an end in the upper Manhattan neighborhood of Washington Heights when the driver was caught in traffic a second time.

One biker in the video is shown taking off his helmet and using it to smash the driver-side window of the SUV. Police sources told the New York Post that the man was slashed in front of his wife and child, who were inside the vehicle.

The man was brought to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital with two black eyes and had to get stitches on his face and chest.

There’s a helmet cam video up on youtube:

Whoever started it, nobody had a gun, and can you say it was a good scene? As Jay said:

The one clear lesson from this story, IMHO, is that in road rage incidents, there are no winners, just survivors…

True dat!
