Home Again!

Well that was just what the doctor ordered!

Arrived at our tent on Lake Champlain, unpacked and immediately took a nap before dinner! Next day was more naps, and a LOT of reading between playing with the nieces and nephews and shooting the breeze with the family.

Been under a lot of stress from work, and taking care of Mrs. Weer’d. Who is doing fine, but understandably needs a bit more help and attention. So this week of fresh air and relaxation really re-charged the batteries.

So for reading I plodded through The Happiest Baby on the Block, which In think is the book version of a DVD. Overall its anthropological take on child rearing is really interesting to me. Still the book is heavy on pages and light on content, so I’ll shelf it for now, and dust it off if I find I haven’t mastered the techniques outlined in the book when I have a real-deal baby in my arms.

Next was Cart Blanche a modern re-boot of Ian Flemming’s James Bond novels, and fully licensed by the Flemming estate. Its a full-reboot of the series where James Bond did his military service not in WWII (as Flemming also did) but in Afganistan for the currently ongoing conflict. Also many of the re-occurring characters are rejuvenated and appear. All of the characters that show up from older Bond books are first seen in Casino Royal, but there is no reference to the events in that book, or a new history to Bond where he might have first encountered them. This makes the book ideal for both a stand-alone novel for those with no history with the books or films, but also full of great Easter Eggs for those who (like Deaver) are deeply versed with the 007 Character. Overall the plot line is impeccable, as is the writing. It was a VERY quick read. My only complaint was Bond’s usage of a Walther PPS in .40 S&W as his primary gun. He never carries it in deep concealment, and he finds himself in frequent shootouts, I’d imagine he’d be better served by any of the larger Walthers, or from the various SIG pistols…if he’s tied to German guns. A S&W M&P9c would be really badass IMHO in Bond’s belt. Since this new Bond is constantly wearing 5.11 gear, maybe an American pistol might serve him better. And you all know I do hate .40 S&W….tho Bond’s PPK from the early books was in 7.65x17mm Browning because the round’s ubiquity in the various nations in the 1960s, maybe .40 S&W is easier to find…it certainly is now in America.

I also read in record time “Suddenly, the Cider Didn’t Taste So Good”, written by a Maine Author my Father met and procured me a signed copy for my birthday. According to Dad his oral story telling is even better than his writing. He’s going to be speaking again in Maine to promote his latest book, and I’ll try to be there to get a signed copy of this one in person, and hear his accounts first-hand.

The book is REALLY good, its more of a rambling collection of funny stories from the woods of Central Maine from a retired Maine Game Warden who wasn’t afraid to rub elbows with the various poachers and ne’er-do-wells who were mostly interesting people who occasionally violated fish and game laws. I loved it, and hearing a few stories from it my 8-year-old niece started plowing through it. Its a really fun read, especially if you like crazy back-woods stories, and animals.

Last, I’m a good way through Dead Six, which is just as magnificent as everything Larry has written. It is NON stop action, and sports a plot so twisty that I’m both engrossed and befuddled right now. Like all of Larry’s books, I couldn’t recommend it more.

Last up I thought I’d share this with you all. While sitting on my deck reading a book my Sister-in-Law decided it would be fun to paint my toenails. I’ve been waking up to this every morning since:

Pretty Toes

Its been a surprise every morning when I see my shiny blue toes looking back at me. The kids were also deeply amused to see their big hairy uncle sporting the prettiest toes at camp.

Back to work tomorrow!

“Gun Death” Missing Body

No body…no gun.

An 18-year-old Puyallup man is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder, and Pierce County sheriff’s detectives are searching for the body of the man he’s accused of killing.

Prosecutors allege Michael Jason Scharpf Breer killed Justin Morris on or about July 10, then disposed of his body at an unknown location. Wednesday, Superior Court Commissioner Meagan Foley ordered Breer held for 72 hours, with arraignment to follow Friday….Based on the patterns of blood stains, detectives guessed that Morris was struck several times on a couch, then slid down to a carpet while more blows fell on his head.

No body, and no “Gun Death”…according to the antis there isn’t even a crime!

“Gun Death” Horrible

Another bad one….

A suspect in the stabbing death of a 6-year-old girl whose body was found in a trash can only days after she disappeared from a suburban New Orleans apartment has confessed to the killing, a sheriff said Wednesday.

Monsters like this are wandering around, and not only do the creeps that use the metric of “Gun Death” want me to NOT carry my guns, but they’d rather I not have my guns at all!

Thanks, but no thanks!

“Gun Death” Golf Cart

Yep:

Police say a Massachusetts woman was fatally injured when she fell from a golf cart after attending a wedding reception in northwestern Indiana.

Why does anybody NEEEEED a golf cart?

“Gun Death” Bad Justice

What’s the point of locking up criminals if you don’t actually lock them up?

A “dangerous” man being sought by police investigating the death of a man stabbed while protecting a neighbour, was a murderer on day release.

The beast was on a day release from prison, and decided to spend the time robbing people. When somebody stepped in he stabbed them to death.

This is why I’m in favor of the death penalty. People are the dangerous weapons, and when somebody is found to be so wanton and monstrous, we really don’t need to keep them around. This man did more damage with a single knife in one day, than I’ve done with HUNDREDS of guns in a lifetime!

“Gun Death” Fire

One of the oldest and most destructive inventions:

A western Pennsylvania man is facing charges for allegedly dousing a 7-year-old boy with flammable liquid and then doing nothing when his shirt caught on fire.

Add insult to injury:

Myers allegedly used his cellphone to film the May 25 attack on his girlfriend’s son. Police say the unidentified boy needed hospital treatment for third-degree burns on his face and chest. He also had welts on his forehead from allegedly being shot with pellets from an air gun.

FILMED IT! Classy! Not a “Gun Death”!

“Gun Death” Murder Suicide

Luckily it was only attempted murder, but this is how it goes in California:

Southern California authorities say a carjacker who slashed a man’s throat during a weekend crime spree killed himself by deliberately crashing into a freeway pillar at more than 100 mph….Authorities say Meeks slashed the throat of a 61-year-old Fontana man, who survived, then carjacked a 73-year-old man and took him along during a police chase.

Investigators say Meeks eventually freed the man and deliberately plowed into a bridge pillar near the junction of Interstate 215 and Interstate 10.

Also you’ll notice the Bad Justice Tag.

Meeks had a second-degree murder conviction. He got probation after acknowledging he accidentally set a 1997 fire in the San Bernardino National Forest that killed the pilot of a firefighting helicopter.

The real item that is un-regulated are the criminals! Guns and “Gun Death” are really irrelevant.

“Gun Death” Simple Argument

Guns make killing to easy. They turn simple arguments into deadly fights!

A New York City cab driver is on the loose after he stabbed and killed an intoxicated man who was looking for a late night ride home, police and witnesses say.

Sources told the New York Post that two men, ages 33 and 26, were drinking at a bar near 68th street in Queens before they went into a bodega to buy a few six-packs.

They hailed the cab driver around 5 a.m. local time Saturday, but he refused to give them a ride because he noticed both men were drunk.

An argument ensued, and then the driver got out of his car and smashed its rear window with a baseball bat before going after the passengers, who defended themselves with beer bottles, police sources told the New York Post.

Glad that “Simple Fight” turned out so well! Not a “Gun Death”!
