Its THE SQUIRREL REPORT!!!
The transistor revolutionized electronics and computing. Now, researchers have made a biological transistor from DNA that could be used to create living computers.
A transistor is a device that controls the flow of electrons in an electrical circuit, which acts as an on-off switch. Similarly, the biological transistor — termed a transcriptor — controls the flow of an enzyme as it moves along a strand of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). These cellular building blocks could be used to do anything from monitoring their environment to turning processes on and off in the cells. The findings were reported Thursday, March 28, in the journal Science.
I’m not sure if this new DNA based logic will be as fast as the electrical one used today, still the number of base pairs in DNA means we aren’t talking in binary anymore, further if we’re looking at DNA fragments, rather than individual base pairs the number of variables goes up considerably, meaning that even if the logic isn’t as fast, it can do much more complicated calculations.
I’m neither an expert in molecular biology, nor in computers, but this does seem VERY interesting.
Still owning a computer that not only needs to be fed, but can get an ACTUAL VIRUS seems a bit scary!
Was just looking up this case in talking over at Bob’s, thought I’d share the good news.
In what is being called a triumph for property rights, a federal judge in Boston has rejected the federal government’s attempt to seize a family-owned motel in Tewksbury under a controversial civil forfeiture law.
The owners of Motel Caswell have never been charged with any crimes and have never come under police suspicion. But in a trial last November, the U.S. attorney’s office sought to take the property because it alleged the motel — the building — had “facilitated” drug crimes….At trial, federal prosecutors introduced information about 15 specific drug-related incidents that occurred in a 14 year period. “It should be noted” wrote Magistrate Judge Judith Dein in Thursday’s decision, that during that time period, Caswell had rented out 196,000 rooms.
“I don’t know how I can see through the doors,” Caswell said last November in reference to the fact that those alleged crimes took place in closed rooms.
It doesn’t mention it but the Caswell family was instrumental in many of those drug arrests due to their cooperation with local police, and still they attempted to take his hotel. Here’s the big kicker:
The idea to go after the Motel Caswell sprung from the Drug Enforcement Administration, the trial revealed. The DEA has an agent who testified his job is to seek out targets for forfeiture by watching television news and reading newspapers. When he finds a property where drug crimes occur he goes to the Registry of Deeds. Finding the Motel Caswell had no mortgage and was worth almost $1.5 million, the DEA teamed up with the Tewksbury Police, who were offered 80 percent of the taking, the agent testified.
This wasn’t just a procedural action, the DEA was FISHING for valuable property they could take possession of, and split with local police. So they were fishing for his property, as well as tying up his business and finances in trials, this is a prime example of “Bad Justice”.
Go over to Bob’s to read about Tam’s Burgers over in California and see if it doesn’t smell the same to you.
Don’t piss off the old lady, even if she doesn’t have a gun:
Authorities say a woman fatally stabbed her husband — a member of the University of Pennsylvania’s 1979 Final Four team — as he slept. Police say she told a friend he had been watching child pornography.
A knuckle dragger might say “A woman’s place is in the kitchen” you know what has a place in the kitchen? KNIVES!
People, not the tools!
Grahh,
Went home for Easter weekend and the Mrs and I picked up a two-pack of colds. For me, Monday off was all I needed to perk back up, she’s having a worse a time of it. That goes double that she’s pregnant so she doesn’t want to hit the medicine cabinet.
Oh well, not a lot of sleep going around here. Brain not up for bloggity.
Everything but the kitchen sink in this one:
klahoma City police say a man assaulted a woman with furniture and then punched a hole in a wall with her head….Williams then beat the victim with a vacuum and large ceramic cat statue, investigators said. According to officers, Williams smashed the woman’s head into a wall, causing a large hole.
Williams also tried to stop the woman from calling police, and resisted arrest, police said. Investigators have not said why Williams went to the home, and what the fight was about.
No guns used, not by the attacker…but also not by the defender. I can imagine a gun in the hand of the defender this might have been a real “Gun Death” but not one I’d shed many tears about.

Because of “Budget Cuts”
Any wonder why California is broke? Also any wonder why its one of the least free states in the Union?
Just FYI, Bonnie of Squeaky Wheel is raising funds to defer medical expenses.
She’s a good lady, sadly plagued with some nasty medical issues. Go have a look and help if you can!
One of the more restrictive states in the Union doubles down:
The proposal includes new registration requirements for existing magazines that carry 10 or more bullets, something of a disappointment for some family members of Newtown victims who wanted an outright ban on the possession of all high-capacity magazines and traveled to the state Capitol on Monday to ask lawmakers for it.
The package also creates what lawmakers said is the nation’s first statewide dangerous weapon offender registry, creates a new “ammunition eligibility certificate,” imposes immediate universal background checks for all firearms sales, and extends the state’s assault weapons ban to 100 new types of firearms and requires that a weapon have only one of several features in order to be banned.
The newly banned weapons could no longer be bought or sold in Connecticut, and those legally owned already would have to be registered with the state, just like the high-capacity magazines
I have no idea how one is supposed to register a magazine, they don’t have serial numbers or even production dates. Hell I have a few magazines that have no markings on them whatsoever. Also looks like if you own an AR-15 or many other semi-auto rifles you’re going to need to register it, and if you want to sell it, or you die, it’ll need to be sold in another state.
Hey, it’s proven not to work, so why not do it more?
Hard to take somebody’s head off with a gun:
Investigators looking for a missing Hong Kong couple reportedly found their severed heads in a bloody apartment, leading to the arrest of their son.
A 29-year old man appeared in a Hong Kong court Monday in connection with the deaths of his parents, whose heads were found in a refrigerator, Sky News reports…The arrests led officers to a building on the outskirts of Hong Kong where they discovered a bloody scene, including the victims’ heads, a chopping board, knives, saws, plastic boxes and bags containing other body parts.
While the heads were in the refrigerator, parts of the couple’s arms and legs were found elsewhere in the apartment.
Thankfully no guns used! Heck Hong Kong has a low “Gun Death” rate!
