Big Wishes

More from Bloomberg:

Mayor Michael Bloomberg has for years criticized President Barack Obama on gun-control policy, with denunciations that become louder when gun violence dominates headlines. Now, in a shift, Bloomberg is shaping the debate from within the White House….He outlined a policy agenda that includes cracking down on gun trafficking, regulating gun sales more heavily and prosecuting more gun owners who break the law. Many of the ideas have been on the mayor’s policy wish list for year.

Bloomberg said he would like to see the commission draft a bill requiring all gun purchasers to undergo criminal background checks, whether the guns are purchased online or at a gun show. He also touted a bill limiting military-style weapons and high-capacity magazines, similar to a federal assault weapons ban that expired.

The mayor also urged felony prosecutions for gun-trafficking crimes and for those who fail background checks when purchasing weapons by lying about criminal histories.

Let’s start with that last bit. This is a prime example of anti-gunners talking off the cuff. Its already a federal felony to sell guns to criminals, and to fail a background check one must purger themselves on the 4473 form at the gun shop, as if they answer any of the questions “Wrong” the sale is cancelled even before the phone is picked up.

Bloomberg probably knows this, but he’s pushing a law that already exists, and is almost never enforced probably so he and others can squeeze wider, more draconian controls in.

As for the other stuff, its boilerplate, and meaningless until a bill gets serious discussion.

We need to be writing our representation NOW to make sure they know where we stand, even BEFORE the bills come before them!

That’s One Solution

Arizona to arm schools with volunteers!

An Arizona sheriff has proposed placing an armed volunteer posse at many Phoenix-area schools, in response to the deadly school shooting in Connecticut…The report emphasized that the plan calls for armed posse members around the perimeters of schools, not inside them. It will focus on about 50 schools within Maricopa County.

Sheriff Arpaio says members of the volunteer posse provide their own equipment and don’t receive a salary, so there’s no cost to taxpayers. But, he says, the volunteers have the experience to handle the job.

“The posse has the same training regarding guns as our regular deputy sheriffs, over 100 hours of training, plus refresher courses,” he said. “We should never have a defeatist attitude. We look to the future and take whatever precautions we can do. I don’t just want to talk, I like action.”

Arpaio has used similar volunteer groups to patrol malls over the holidays. Posse members arrested 31 people this year, and the sheriff thinks their presence may deter criminal activity.

I think any of us who follow the gun issue know that this will NOT result in “Blood in the Streets” as the antis always (and wrongly) predict. Further no pay for the volunteers, as well as no public equipment means they’ll likely be harder to spot by the nuts in the unlikely event they target the school.

Let’s face it, the common denominator in these events is the “Gun Free Zone” status. Its not a protection, its a crazy magnet!

Much like the statement that an armed society protects from government tyranny, because tyrants won’t act on armed people, I suspect this will make damn sure the crazies go someplace else.

“Gun Death” Pushed Over the Edge

I heard about the story, I didn’t hear about the aftermath!

The apparent suicide of Jacintha Saldanha, the nurse who inadvertently put through a prank call to the hospital ward where the Duchess of Cambridge was staying, has provoked outrage, sadness and demands for retribution in all corners of the media.

Now both because it was the UK, and a nurse which even here in the states is generally a pretty anti-gun group, also women tend to shy away from guns as suicide methods, I think we can assume this horrible suicide was not with a gun.

Still I wanted to probe the bigger issue:

The tragedy has revived memories of previous practical jokes that have gone horribly wrong, but also stirred an already febrile debate on ethical boundaries, whether in the mainstream or social media, and what, if any, legal recourse should be available to people humiliated or taunted in public.

Now first up, the DJs did a total dick move here, and they should face some reprimand, but suicide is a personal issue so they are not directly to blame. As for the breaching of the hospitals privacy protections, I actually am FOR this, as any old oddball may be tempted to glean information about patients, and even if they aren’t royalty or celebrities their information needs to be protected. This event exposed a HUGE flaw in the system of protections.

Jeff on “Assault Weapons”

What he doesn’t touch on much is that the term “Assault Weapon” is 100% meaningless unless there is a specific law defining it. Currently unless you live in a place like Massachusetts that specifically regulates “Assault Weapons”, it means nothing, but can be passed around with impunity.

Be vigilant, they’re trying to run the same scam from 94 again, but we have the means to fight the misinformation now, but it will take work.

Hustles

Was listening to Penn’s Sunday School at work today, and he was talking about the carnival scam of a Jam Auction. Curious I did a search and found this video:

Neat scam. Not only is it taking advantage of people’s greed thinking they got something for nothing, but also they’re conditioning the marks into thinking they’re happy with the scam.

Much more interesting than the standard scam like this:

These people think THEY’RE doing the cheating, so they’re less willing to think they’re the ones being scammed.

As the old saying goes: “You can’t cheat an honest man”.

Neat psychology.

Another Fantastic Video

I like this guy’s videos, but I wrongly assumed he was just one of those guys doing cool gun videos for fun and profit but not somebody who was willing to step up to the political plate.

Awesome! Thanks for your hard work!

I must say these popular youtube people are great for the cause as they get non-political people in the facebook world to listen.

Its Offically a Criminal Shopping List

A criminal admits those newspapers lists are good for business!

Reformed crooks say the New York newspaper that published a map of names and addresses of gun owners did a great service – to their old cronies in the burglary trade.

The information published online by the Journal-News, a daily paper serving the New York suburbs of Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties, could be highly useful to thieves in two ways, former burglars told FoxNews.com. Crooks looking to avoid getting shot now know which targets are soft and those who need weapons know where they can steal them.

“That was the most asinine article I’ve ever seen,” said Walter T. Shaw, 65, a former burglar and jewel thief who the FBI blames for more than 3,000 break-ins that netted some $70 million in the 1960s and 1970s. “Having a list of who has a gun is like gold – why rob that house when you can hit the one next door, where there are no guns?

“What they did was insanity,” added Shaw, author of “License to Steal,” a book about his criminal career.

Yep not only does it hurt the gun owners, but it hurts the NON gun owners.

More Environmental Unintended Consequences

I hate the Ethanol Blends. Its just lousy gas, that costs the same as the pure stuff…but costs tax subsidies even if you never touch the stuff.

Also since the church of global warming is concerned more about CO2 Emissions than anything else…its the same! Then there’s this angle.

Can we quit this crap yet? Ethanol is for DRINKING! Don’t put it in your cars!

“Gun Death” Sword

Of course we know once this “Gun Death” thing blows over if the antis win, they’ll soon be talking about banning blades:

Authorities in north Georgia say a 16-year-old boy is expected to make his first court appearance Monday after he was accused of killing his stepfather with a sword.

Pickens County sheriff’s Lt. Kris Stancil says a relative of the teen called 911 Friday night to report the stabbing.

And of course those new laws will be just as effective as the ones to reduce “Gun Death”. Of course if the antis ban guns, we won’t hear about “Gun Death” anymore. Not because they don’t happen, but without an agenda they are just as irrelevant as this story!
