New Term for Debate Avoidance

So one thing I’ve been noticing is that Authoritarians have have an ever increasing war against civil and open discourse and debates.

On the larger scale there are politicians holding “Town Hall Meetings” that are closed to the public. We also now have the new “Safe Space” culture that wants to ban words and honestly points of view, and is quick to blanket ANYTHING they don’t like with “Racist” or “Nazi”. And of course that cultural movement has the whole Antifa and Black Lives Matter who outright riot, so rather than debate they beat you to a pulp and burn your business down.

But on the individual level we have the long-standing abuse of Godwin’s Law. Godwin is actually an amusing observation that if an argument goes on long enough SOMEBODY is going to bring up Nazis. Funny, and really sort of irrelevant. But the abuse is that if in a debate if somebody brings up the Third Reich as an observation, rather than form a rebuttal a coward will say “Godwin’s Law, this debate is over!!!”.

I made this observation a number of years ago, that if a “Progressive” trolling a Conservative/Libertarian blog or discussion group, when they get any reasonable response they VANISH as to never need to concede a loss.

The new term in the title I hadn’t heard is called “Sealioning”. From Wikipedia

Sealioning (also spelled sea-lioning and sea lioning) is a type of trolling or harassment which consists of pursuing people with persistent requests for evidence or repeated questions. The harasser who uses this tactic also uses fake civility so as to discredit their target. The term arises from a 2014 edition of the webcomic Wondermark, where a character expresses a dislike of sea lions and a passing sea lion repeatedly asks the character to explain.

Now here’s the comic in question (decided not to grab the image because I need to display the whole comic and that’s pressing fair use) Go have a look.

Notice something? A person states that they don’t have an issue with marine mammals, but they don’t like sea lions. Then a sea lion shows up, and rightly takes offense, and continues to ask for an explanation of her hatred. At NO POINT does the women who admits to disliking sea lions actually give a reason for their dislike.

back to Wikipedia:

According to Claire Hardaker, a researcher and senior lecturer in linguistics at Lancaster University; the best way to deal with a suspected sea-lioning attack is not to engage them in the first place; but if you must, then to direct them towards third-party sources. If they are seriously curious individuals, they will be able to learn more without taking up time and resources.

So the 3rd party bit is actually a great tactic for any real-world debate, because #1 it keeps the division of labor clear, you can argue with some asshole for 2 hours only to have them say “Fuck you, you’re wrong!!!” and you’ve wasted a lot of efforts. I’ve had lots of debates where I suggested to somebody with an anti-gun view to seek out some 3rd party sources…the ignorant zealots NEVER do it, and the people who have sought out the data I’m going to cite, no matter how critical they are, they almost always convert because when facts are on your side, the open minded will quickly fall to your side.

But note the LEAD is “Not Engage”, but in this story she openly said she hated sea lions, and a sea lion wanted to know why….and NEVER got a response. Since this is a gun blog, and it’s what I do, I can’t help but think about the people who lead with “I’m fine with SPORTING guns, but those evil semi-autos need to be banned!!!”

I would of course ask what made them evil, and needing to be banned. And if you follow this blog, you know they generally delete my comments and ban me.

Now I’ve had discussions with people who just refuse to hear my rebuttals or talk past me, and if THAT was Sealioning, I get it, there are times when you just need to pull anchor and sail away, but every reference to this I’ve read really just boils down to “Never answer questions you don’t want to”.

If they’re on the right side, why do they avoid debate and discussion so much?

Hello Internet!

One of the Most Amazing Things I’ve Seen

I love Steven Crowder, he’s smart, he’s entertaining, he’s funny.

He’s Conservative, so I don’t agree with him on all things…but that goes for everyone.

I expected this segment to be one of his videos I’d turn off. Nope, Amazing!

I would think because of my anti-gun past, and all the monitoring of anti-gun talking points I could do a decent devil’s advocate on gun control.

I don’t think I could do as well as Crowder did in this video. That is serious skill!

Because I Believe In It

As I mentioned in the last post I attend the NRAAM as Press, it gives me better access to vendors, gives me access to the Press Room and it puts me on the NRA Mailing List. I don’t republish many of the mailers, but this one really needs more ink:

July 2018 Marks Biggest Month in Eddie Eagle GunSafe® Program History

FAIRFAX, Va. – The NRA Eddie Eagle GunSafe® Program reached another milestone in its 30th anniversary year, as the program fulfilled more requests for Eddie Eagle program materials in the month of July 2018 than any other month in program history.

The NRA provided more than 250,000 Eddie Eagle student workbooks throughout July primarily to law enforcement agencies throughout the nation, many of whom will use the materials to teach firearm accident prevention during community events, such as the National Night Out ™ this summer.

In the program’s three decades of outreach, more than 30 million children across the United States have learned NRA’s simple, effective firearm accident prevention principles. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, unintentional firearm fatalities among children of the Eddie Eagle GunSafe® Program’s targeted age group have declined almost 80 percent since the program’s debut.

Created in 1988 by NRA Past President Marion P. Hammer, the Eddie Eagle GunSafe® Program is a gun accident prevention program developed by a task force made up of educators, school administrators, curriculum specialists, urban housing safety officials, clinical psychologists, law enforcement officials and National Rifle Association firearm safety experts. The program was founded with one mission: to teach children four simple, easy to remember steps so they know what to do if they ever come across a gun — STOP! Don’t Touch. Run Away. Tell a Grownup.

Impacting approximately a million children a year, the Eddie Eagle GunSafe® Program has been utilized by more than 28,000 schools, law enforcement agencies, and civic groups. The governors of 26 states have signed resolutions recommending that the program be used in their school systems and the legislatures of 25 states passed resolutions recommending the use of the Eddie Eagle GunSafe® Program.

Funds raised through Friends of NRA and distributed through The NRA Foundation enable schools and police departments to teach the program at minimal or no cost. The NRA encourages citizens nationwide to participate in heightening gun accident prevention awareness within their local communities. School administrators and faculty, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, and others interested in more information about the Eddie Eagle GunSafe® Program should contact the Eddie Eagle GunSafe® Program by email at [email protected] or call (800) 231-0752. Parents can visit http://www.eddieeagle.com to begin learning today!

My daughter has been taught using the Eddie Eagle resources and it works better than I would ever have imagined. This stuff can LITERALLY save your child’s life, both if you have a gun in the home, OR if you don’t. Your child could be in the home of somebody who owns guns and doesn’t store them as smartly as they should. Or as I mentioned on ACP, your child might encounter a gun in a place where you do not expect one!

Teach them safety and respect, it could save their life!

Troll Feeding

I know, never feed the trolls, but I’m curious where this will go.

In the comments of this thread one of the anti-gun acolytes claimed the NRA had a lack of younger members, nor Women, blacks or Hispanics. I’ll admit the Black and Hispanic membership still needs work, but the numbers are on the rise. So I called out Dorothy on her lies.

Like a true Misogynist Mike decides she can’t defend her own lies, so he comes in with this:

Did you attend the meeting? Record-breaking? Who said that. The NRA PR Department?

I did attend the meeting, and noted there was no evidence that Mike did, and that the NRA keept detailed records of their attendance
as all people entering the show or meeting needed to have a show badge, so if in fact they were lying it would be a pretty big blunder.

Mike Doubled down:

You didn’t see me at the show? And this proves anything? Why should I believe what the NRA says about its own attendance? Oh, I forgot. Trump’s inauguration had the highest attendance of any inauguration. And by the way, if a gun-control organization held a big meeting and said that they had whatever attendance number I wouldn’t believe them either.
Getting a crowd to a gun show in Texas is nothing, okay? And does the NRA count unique attendance or just add up the turnstile count each day? Who knows? And let’s say that they did have a record-breaking attendance. That doesn’t prove anything either way about whether Dorothy’s statements were true or not.
Want to criticize Dorothy for saying things that aren’t true> Then have the courtesy to respond directly to what she said and don’t indulge yourself in throwing up something totally irrelevant like attendance at an NRA show as if this ‘proves’ that Dorothy’s comments were incorrect.

Note there’s no facts given to show I’ve told a lie, and I was actually there, and Mike Wasn’t. I did link Lawdawg who noted exactly what I did

The average age of the attendees is younger than in the past conventions, and fitter. While I’m still navigating around wheezing late-middle-aged gentlemen, there are a lot more fit, squared-away folks.

Is the NRA sponsoring a Crossfit club, or something?

Also, there are more un-accompanied women. At the other NRAAMs I’ve been to, the majority of the lady attendees are obviously there with the Boyfriend /Husband /Spouse-Like Love Unit. While most of them still are, there are a lot more moving around the floor by themselves — including at least two ladies standing in line at booths with strollers in tow.

I also didn’t link the live show I did from Dallas, but here it is, where I also talked about the demographics and attendance.

So after that….nothing, and after 3 days I posted this link just to show the embarrassing tactic of anti-gunners to never admit defeat no matter how badly they’re licked….and if you simply disappear, you can claim plausible deniability.

Now comes the cowardice, this morning Mike emails me, and claims I called people a liar and supplied no evidence. Interesting that he’s claiming this while evidence is supplied AND he’s lying, and he threatened to ban me “again” from his blog (I suspect he just bans my IP and when my IP renews suddenly I can comment again)

I noted the evidence I cited, and the lies he implied, and told him to quit being a blowhard.

So he doubled down.

You want to tell me what ‘evidence’ you have here? And you go into the show as ‘press.’ That’s a good one.

You’re a Benefactor Life Patriot member? Prove it big shot. Put a pic of your certificate online like the way mine is online.

I can’t resist

Personal information redacted be as we have seen here and here Mike is a dishonest person with boundary issues, and I’m sure he wants to use this information to cross some social lines.

Still that’s my business card, that’s the same rug most of my gun pics are shot on, and there are only two hosts for Handgun Radio, and Ryan Michad wasn’t able to make it.

So there you go, Mike now has 24 hours to show me his badge from, or in fact he’s a fucking liar.

**UPDATE** Well that didn’t take long. From Mike

Here’s the deal. You’re banned. Know why? Because you’re nothing but a troll. Funny, but I have no trouble posting my personal information. But trolls like you always have excuses for not posting personal information. Yea, like I’m going to harass you. That’s a good one.

Goodbye and good riddance (again.) Sand when you go to the library and use another computer with a different IP address I’ll ban you again.

My Response:

Nope, you’re blocking me because I caught you in a lie, and you’re cooking up another lie to cover for it.

Predictable behavior.

If the gun control agenda was indeed righteous, then why do they all lie so much?

And in this case over petty crap.

They lie ALL the time, compulsively!
