All this talk about EDC knives, I thought I’d snap a picture of my Knife Caddy made for my collection by the wife.
I carry at least one of these knives every day, and while I have my favorites that I carry more than others, all of them find themselves in my pocket at one time or another.
I need to do reviews on several of them.
I got thinking about this post and the comments that are coming in. I thought I’d give a riff of analogies of things that follow the same vein of “I’ve never carried a gun, and I’m still alive, so you’re foolish for carrying a gun!” argument.
Of course all below are in jest, and should be taken as seriously as an anti telling you to not carry.
-I’ve smoked cigarettes and cigars to some degree since I turned 18, and I’ve never had cancer or emphysema. Obviously this means that the hazards of smoking are just paranoia.
-I’ve been in several car accidents, but I’ve never been injured, or seen an airbag deploy. Obviously auto safety features are a scam of the auto industry.
– I have had unprotected sex, and I have yet to have an unwanted pregnancy, nor an STI, so safe sex is obviously just paranoia.
-Tho I have no way of verifying it, I suspect that there have been times in my youth when I’ve driven an automobile when I was over the blood alcohol limit. I also suspect that I’ve been driven by people who were legally drunk. None of these events resulted in an arrest, nor an accident, so obviously people being concerned about drunk driving are paranoid.
-I have never had a home fire, or had my smoke detectors detect anything but dinner being burned. I’ve never heard my CO detectors chime on anything but their manual test. Home fires or CO poisoning are obviously problems of less civilized nations not at war.
-I have a home alarm, but it has never had anything but false alarms. People who are concerned about burglary or home invasions are paranoid.
-Neither I, nor my wife have been sexually assaulted. People who take precautions against rape are just being paranoid!
-I’ve managed to live my whole life without having a heart attack, or diabetes. People who watch their weight and diet are being overly fearful.
Man the list could go on! BTW it just so happens that I personally know at LEAST one person who has been effected by every single one of these dangers. The world is not a safe place, but it is possible to avoid serious harm with just dumb luck if you use a narrow enough scope, and a short enough timeline.
Don’t take advice from illogical people. That goes double for illogical people with a political agenda!
The antis have had a lot of fun with attempting to control the language to their favor. Stuff like “Assault Weapons”, “High Capacity Bullet Clips” and “Armor Piercing Ammunition” really only exist from them attempting to vilify common guns as something they aren’t. Well recently there has been a push-back. The Article seems to take a shine to the AR-platform, tho I’d say any modern semi-auto rifle will count.
The Antis don’t seem to like this at all.
NSSF begs gun rights activists to call assault rifles “modern sporting rifles.” Ridiculous? You bet.
NSSF to gun writers, please, please, please use the term “modern sporting rifle.”
Of course we’ll first take note that most of these Sporting Rifles are based on military designs, what’s neat is the older bolt, lever, and pump-action sporting rifles that are falling out of favor were also based on military patterns. Heck even black powder rifles were once the main battle rifle of the military. So heritage doesn’t really count.
I guess “Modern” could be a little suspect as the AR platform was invented in the 50s, the Guns like the FAL, M14, the CETME, the SKS, M1 Carbine and the AK all from the 40s. Still we have guns like the Bushmaster ACR, and the FNH SCAR pattern guns that are brand-spanking new. Certainly compared to Pump action, the Mauser-style bolt action, and the lever action, which are all 19th century technology, they are “modern” by comparison.
Sporting? Well I can think of two very popular sports where they’re only-way-to-go.
The other sport that is often thought of for “Sporting Rifle” is hunting. The AR-15 is the Swiss-Army gun as far as that goes, you can mount uppers that will take any game animal in North America, and the better part of the world, anything from rabbits and such with a .22 Conversion, Prairie Dogs and varmints with .223, to Moose and Bear with .450 Bushmaster or .50 Beowulf. All from a standard AR-platform. Of course AR-10 style rifles, and the H&K G3 CETME, or the M14/M1A, or FN FAL pattern rifles are in 7.62x51mm/.308 Winchester which is one of the most popular sporting cartridges out there for medium to large game. Also an AK pattern in the ubiquitous 7.62x39mm round is close enough to the .30-30 Winchester to be interchangeable with it.
And as an added bonus these sporting guns are excellent for self defense!
So what part was “Ridiculous”?

There has never been a moment in my life when having a gun on my person would have helped or saved me or my loved ones in any way. And before assuming my life has been a sheltered pile of roses, I will assure you that is not the case. I was once choked to the point of neck bruising by an ex-con. I spent a few nights sleeping in a car. I walked home (near downtown Milwaukee) alone in the middle of the night several times. There have been a number of situations of which could have led me to much harm. In none of those circumstances do I feel that carrying a gun would have helped me.
Ummm Can you tell us where to send flowers? She kinda reminds me of the Panda’s who refuse to have sex in the zoo. There’s a reason why the Human population keeps growing, and Pandas will probably one-day only exist in captivity.
I’ve got no problem with you deciding that a gun won’t do you any good because you haven’t been killed yet (Kinda the opposite of the “From My Cold Dead Hands” Cry) but I’ll be a little less risk tolerant, and keep a .45 on hand.
BTW there are members of my family and friends who ARE alive today because they were carrying a gun. And just to further ellipse this idiot, there are a HUGE number of my family and friends who own and carry guns and haven’t used them…or had a major problem because of them.
So why not carry, you never know. Buckling you safety belt and a multi-vitamin wouldn’t hurt either!

I think there have only been 5 or 6 days since that I haven’t taken advantage of it at some point during the day (I couldn’t bring a gun to school or any restaurant that served alcohol while I was in MT, and I couldn’t bring a gun with me when I flew to WY for a job interview–thanks overlords for your random and capricious rules).
I just took a look at the issue date on my permit, and it turned 3 about a month ago, and really the only times I’ve been disarmed when traveling to rights-hostile territory. Pretty much I’ve been an all-day every day sort of guy.
Still I’m curious, I know a few people who have a permit who don’t carry (Its a bit odd in Mass given that you need a permit to OWN a gun, so lots of people get an unrestricted LTC without so much as a thought about carrying) I also know a few people who are fair-weather carriers. Like if they were to go out late at night, or travel through a dodgy area. I also know a guy (Who reads this blog. I’m talking to you, Foxtrot!) who doesn’t carry for fear of onerous retaliation by the anti-rights forces of Marxichusetts if he ever needs to use it. (Frankly I think that’s bullshit, but even if it wasn’t, I’d rather be alive and hemorrhaging my life savings in a court battle than dead).
So here’s a question for the comment section: Do you Carry? How often? If you don’t carry all the damn time, why not?
Carry your gun and be safe. You never know when you might need one.

Now I have never served, but from what I hear the only thing that this REALLY effects is demanding gay soldiers lie about who’s waiting at home for them, and maybe be a little less fearful when on leave off-base.
As for all the sexual disasters on military bases, I think it sounds more an issue of selective enforcement, rather than gay cooties or what women are doing to service, but that’s just how I see it, correct me if I’m wrong.

Dogs gotta eat. BTW Hungry dogs don’t really care who starved them, if you’re made of meat, they’re gonna make a go of it. A carry gun is also good for hostile animals as they are for hostile people.

So the Joyce Foundation AstroTurf Protect Minnesota is all buthurt about HR 822, the national Conceal Carry Reciprocity bill.
We oppose the gutting of Minnesota gun laws by HR 822, which would allow any out-of-state concealed carry permit holder to bring a hidden, loaded gun into Minnesota. As reports show, Florida has issued over 1,400 permits to people guilty of felonies and over 200 to people with outstanding arrest warrants. Allowing cross-border transporting of loaded guns will make life easy for gun traffickers and threaten Minnesota’s safety. Minnesota law enforcement officers would be faced with easily-forged permits from all of the other states. This is an irresponsible encroachment on the right of Minnesota to set public safety policy.
Like all Joyce shills no citations of their data. Its certainly not LEGAL to issue permits to people with felony convictions, nor outstanding warrants, Furthermore even if this is true the permit wouldn’t do jack shit, as a Conceal Weapons permit allows for somebody to LEGALLY carry a weapon. Well if you’re a felon, or have a warrant, you can’t actually carry or POSSES a firearm, and that little piece of paper suddenly doesn’t NOTHING in an encounter with Law Enforcement.
Still I got curious so I went and looked at the Minnesota laws.
Appears that 15 states are allowed to carry in Minnesota, one of them is Utah, which is the #1 permit acquired by those who like to travel while carrying. I personally don’t have a Utah permit because I have a Florida one that’s almost as good, and I have little desire to go to Minnesota, can you blame me?
This part got me scratching my head:
On an annual basis, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety is directed to establish and publish an online Internet listing of states which have handgun carry permit laws that are not substantially similar to Minnesota’s law under Minnesota Session Laws 2003, Chapter 28, Article 2 Section 21, Minn. Stat. 624.714 Subd. 16.
Struck me as weird given that there are some pretty restrictive states that Minnesota won’t honor…so I went to the law books.
Subd. 2a.Training in the safe use of a pistol.
(a) An applicant must present evidence that the applicant received training in the safe use of a pistol within one year of the date of an original or renewal application.
I think that’s it. Most states are one-time trainers, and unless you let your permit lapse, you’re good-to-go.
Of course you know how I feel about all this bullshit. Obviously somebody who hasn’t gone to the range, or discharged a round in several years is going to be so much “Safer” than somebody who shoots once a week, but hasn’t had formal training in 30 years.
Its nonsense, unless you regularly shoot your skills will perish, and mandatory training isn’t going to necessarily do anything to improve those skills. The numbers reflect this, as gun accidents and violent crime committed by permit holders is at statistical noise levels.
Oh BTW they’re worried about all sorts of permits and forgeries:
(a) The holder of a permit to carry must have the permit card and a driver’s license, state identification card, or other government-issued photo identification in immediate possession at all times when carrying a pistol and must display the permit card and identification document upon lawful demand by a peace officer, as defined in section 626.84, subdivision 1.
So you must carry your permit card (A Minnesota Non-resident permit, or a permit from the listed 15 states that Minnesota Recognizes….to further complicate things some states issue drastically different cards for resident vs. Non-resident cards) and then “driver’s license, state identification card, or other government-issued photo identification” OK how many different documents are we talking now? So a driver’s licence, or state ID from ANY of the 50 states, and then who knows how many more State issued IDs could count. So really, adding 35 more State Permits isn’t really going to kill anybody.
Really this law is much-ado about nothing. It doesn’t even give the Government a backdoor way to restrict carry. It simply says if a state issues a permit the other states must honor them. Just like driver’s licenses or marriage licenses. Also every state is different with those. Different tests, fees, requirements, and the paperwork is all unique to the state. I don’t know if it still happens but I know some states required a blood test for couples looking to tie the knot. I know Maine didn’t subject the wife or I to such tribulations. Also many states, including Massachusetts, don’t care what GENDER you are, just Party #1, and Party #2, no Bride, no Groom. Some states choose to be scared of gay cooties, but they oddly enough aren’t scared of Mass Marriage licenses. They have no problem recognizing that paperwork so long as you adhere to traditional genitalia.
Same goes for Driver’s licenses, the tests are all different, and the requirements are all different. Even state-to-state traffic laws vary a good deal (Just ask anybody who’s seen their first Jughandle Turn in New Jersey, or gone through a Rotary in Massachusetts) but yet every state honors your driver’s license without question, and will exchange licenses if you move from one state to another. I have a Massachusetts driver’s license, and all I had to do to get it was move to Mass and exchange my Maine license, and pay a ridiculous fee.
Also for people like myself who carry everywhere we go, and go to multiple states on a regular basis, this will save you a TON of money in maintaining multiple state permits.
And the downsides to this are…well there aren’t any!
But they’d like to pretend there is!
Story out of Ohio.
According to Ontario Police Chief Rod Smith, the woman was a gas station at West Fourth Street and Lexington-Springmill Road when her gun fell from its holster and discharged, shooting her in the leg.
OK first up, I wanna know what kind of gun it was.
Still this is totally preventable. First step, only carry a drop-safe gun. Most modern guns these days are drop-safe. They have hammer-blocks, firing pin blocks, transfer bars, or on some of the more traditional 1911s, a lightweight firing pin and a heavy firing pin spring. (and honestly guns like the 1911 I wonder if its even possible in the wild to discharge a “Non-drop-safe version”)
Also carry the gun how it was meant to be carried. The most egregious is to carry a M1911 in Condition 2. A half-cock notch is safer, but really a 1911 is meant to be carried cocked-and-locked, or the less-desirable condition 3 with an empty chamber.
Get a good holster! Even a hi-point can run close to $100 used, don’t buy the cheapest holster out there! Even a cheap gun is worth it. Also preferably buy a holster for THAT gun. If not buy one with some form of manual retention. You should be able to jump up and down, stand up, sit down, and run without your gun falling out of your holster.
Last Rule #5! never catch a dropped gun. The most drop-safe gun is immune from negligent discharge if you grab it by the trigger. A falling gun you’re going to grab it wherever you can in whatever orientation its in. This can be deadly, so let it bounce.
Be safe out there, and carry your gun safely!

Actually not one of my favorite EDC knife. Its a Bob Dozier Ka-Bar Folder. Its slow to deploy, uses a lockback lock that I’m not a fan of, and has a combo edge which I also don’t care for.
Still its a rugged, light, and quality knife. I wouldn’t carry it if it wasn’t. Also these knives can be had for SHORT money, I bought a shitload of them at the NRA show for the amazing price of 5 for $40!
If I lose it, I won’t cry. If I do something stupid with it and chip the blade, I have more. I’m in a goofy place where a 4″ pocket knife is something bothersome, I can toss it in the trash without flinching.
All that and its everything you need in a knife. And you can tell by how beat and filthy it is that I do use it all the time.

**UPDATE** Alan wonders why I only carry ONE knife. Oops, I forgot about this one:
CRKT Gekkota. It also has a bottle opener, and a screwdriver, as well as the little blade. Also this piece has been riding in my pocket attached to my keys for over a year-and-a-half, and besides a few dents and scratches it still looks scary good. A CRKT rep says the metallic powder coat on the body is protected with an epoxy coat so it still looks brand new despite some of the worst abuse possible.
