Carry your guns people. Remember, this guy was at work when he got the call that something fishy was going on. Note he didn’t believe it was a legitimate break-in, so he didn’t call the cops, and just verified that the house was clear and secure, when he found the robber.

Obviously if you don’t feel you can clear your own house or legitimately fear and intruder it might be a good situation for the professionals to handle, but cops are busy people, so don’t call them until you’re sure there’s a problem.

If he hadn’t been carrying that day he would have needed to enter the house (note he said several pocket knives were stolen, these could have been potential weapons, not considering if the robber might have brought his own arms) and get to his gun BEFORE he encountered the robber.
