Setback

Well I’m back in Massachusetts now, after giving a very impromptu promotion to one of my staffers to Assistant Security Chair. Hopefully Portcon will do well in my absence.

Why am I here? Well I got a call from the Mrs. at 1am last night and she was really upset. She was concerned she had had a seizure in her sleep. Her muscles felt sore, and she just had a bad feeling about it.

She took some Lorazepam which essentially conks the brain out and quiets any seizure activity and let her go to sleep.

Next morning we talked and chalked it up to her lugging some heavy groceries home, coupled with a epilepsy nightmare. The nightmares are not uncommon to her, as you can imagine for a woman who’s dealt with this condition for about half of her life.

Well optimism was not to win out. With the first Convention attendees getting their badges and my staff starting their duties my phone rang.

It was the Mrs. again. She was disoriented, groggy, and talking funny on account that she had bit up her tongue pretty bad. There could be no doubt that she had had a seizure.

I gave things a little bit of thought, then I tracked down the con chair and told her my dilemma. A few more meetings with a few more people, and I was encouraged to get the hell out of Dodge and take care of my wife, and assured the slack would be picked up, and I would be missed.

So on the highway I went and returned. Also Mom-in-Law was coming down anyway, so she’s here as well, so Casa de Weer’d is well staffed with caregivers.

She also talked to the doctor who is putting her back on an intermediate dose of her meds. During her med taper we knew this was a possibility, just we got a little confident when the last of the pills were taken and 3 weeks passed with no ill effects.

Still 10 months without a seizure and 3 weeks of no meds without a seizure is a vast improvement for a woman who had about 12 seizures a month on a very high dose of medication.

Spirits are pretty low here, but I suspect a reasonable end-game of no seizures on a low dose of medication is in our future.

Still if you got any of those thoughts and prayers laying around, they’d me much appreciated, especially since the Mrs will be reading this once she’s feeling a bit better.

Stay strong for her, my friend. Of course, you don’t need anyone to say that. But she is a lucky woman, to have found her very own Sheep Dog.

There are different sorts of afflictions, but the Lord sends Guardian Angels to walk the earth and watch over them. As you well know, it is a hard duty, but infinitely rewarding in its time.

I guess I mixed my metaphors in this comment, but you know what I mean. πŸ˜‰

Your news was a shock. It sure sounded like you were home free on this issue. I’m sure that you are correct on how the situation will resolve itself. But still, it looked like you hit a grand slam, and I hate to see that taken away from you. Sigh.
