That Worked Out Well!

OK so after the deck got torn down I was left with a pile of lumber.

Called the town and they wouldn’t take it. They suggested either hauling it to a local transfer station, or having it professionally removed.

I called the transfer station and let’s just say they aren’t as easy going as the junkyards in Maine I’ve dealt with in the past. The pile was too big to fit all in my truck, and the station was going to charge me a healthy fee every time I entered their place, no matter how much slop I offloaded. I decided to call 1-800-Got-Junk on my lunch break. They were ready to come within the hour. I had to let them know when I’d be home from work first.

Dude’s showed up 10 mins after I’d gotten home (I was putting my trash barrel away just as they pulled in). The price was a bit higher than I had initially hoped for, but not much. I gave the OK, and in about 40 mins the wood was gone, and they swiped my credit card in the truck and were gone.

So a bit pricey, (and maybe outlandishly so if you have a cheap dump near you) but they’re fast, accommodating, and do all the work for you. So overall I’m happy with their work!

I’m also happy to have my yard clear again.

One of the nice things about living in the country is if you can’t get it to the junk yard (cheaply) and it’s flammable, you put it all in a big pile (just like the one you got there, except away from buildings), you spread around some gasoline and toss in a match.

My family burned a house last year on the family farm, on account of it was completely dilapidated and my parents wanted to build their retirement home on that particular spot, so we called in one of my cousins-in-law who knew how to operate heavy equipment, rented a backhoe, tore it down, then lit it up. It burned for three months.

Unfortunately my yard is a total postage stamp with an ample amount of trees. No safe place to burn it on site. I did think about it because the city is VERY friendly to burning especially now that we’ve been getting regular rain.

Might have considered piling it up in your front yard with a “Free Lumber” sign? I’ve got a ton of lumber odds and ends in my garage for random projects from stuff I’ve demolished in flipping houses.

    Weer’d,

Just something to think about for future projects. My coworker put his deck on Craigslist. Free, but you have to dismantle and haul it away. Had 8 callers within 2 hours. Deck totally gone in 2 days.
