Guns, the Cure for Carjackers

A nice story!

What started out as a Mother’s Day brunch ended with a violent chase and a citizen’s arrest for some diners in southeast Portland Sunday morning.

Customers took down a carjacking suspect after he threatened a man with a knife in an Elmer’s restaurant parking lot, according to Sgt. Pete Simpson. Prior to the takedown, the suspect was involved in two hit-and-run crashes, according to witnesses.

Norman Heselton, who had his car sideswiped by the suspect, said he saw the suspect bail out of his car in the Elmer’s parking lot. He ran after the suspect with a friend.

“I held him down. He goes, ‘What’s going on?’ And I was like, ‘Dude, you just hit and run us! Police are on their way,'” Heselton said.

But the driver, who police identified as Jonathan Yager Jones, refused to go down without a fight. Heselton said Jones jumped up and pulled out a knife.

While the confrontation unfolded in the parking lot, Dave Rocks was leaving Elmer’s after Mother’s Day brunch.

Rocks said it looked like Jones “was going to kill someone,” so he pulled out his concealed handgun.

“Once he realized he was outnumbered, knife against gun, that’s when he gave up,” Rocks said.

better yet:

Police said they later discovered the suspect had stolen a car and then carjacked another person in Clackamas County before getting into the two accidents near I-205.

This guy was on a rampage, and was stopped!

good on them!

Also this story dovetails well with an image Joan Peterson likes on Pintrest:

First up the elephant in the room is the MASSIVE number that is suicides. The United States has more civilian arms per capita than any other nation…yet we’re just about in the middle when it comes to suicide. You want to tell me guns cause suicide???

But let’s look at that small “Justifiable Homicide” number. This case isn’t one of them. There are lots of other cases where no shots were fired, or the attacker lived. Seem like a valid image to you?

They’re gaming the numbers as usual… I just ignore that crap and move on…

So, in Joan’s eyes it would be *better* if more people killed their attackers in self defense? And funny that they’ll use justifiable homicide, which is not all self defense with a gun, nor is it all self defense with a gun.

And so much for “if it saves one life.” Guess the couple hundred people behind that 200 justifiable homidice number don’t count.

    • Weerd Beard says:

      Oh of COURSE not!

A disaster. So, the effect of Stand Your Ground Laws has been, in many cases, to protect criminals from arrest and prosecution in murder cases. And more deaths due to these laws is clearly a case against the laws. Is this what the NRA wants?

Guns not being used “often enough” is reason to abandon them as they obviously aren’t useful! Guns being used “too often” (both terms defined by unbiased her) is an obvious abuse of the system, and new restrictive laws should be passed!

Amazingly enough every road leads to banning guns…but she isn’t coming for our guns!

Also I’ve noticed a shift on the antis this week. Instead of going 100% private sale ban they’ve diversified back to private sale bans / mag bans / pro registration and anti self defense.

Interesting. Given the focus on the latter may be some fear in their ranks of Gun Culture 2.0 normalizing self defense.

  4. Joel says:

Joan knows guns are only for killing people, so nothing else counts.

  5. Cargosquid says:

Um…. If the CDC lists 30K deaths.
And murder is 8500 more or less
and 19000 of those deaths are suicides
and there are only…say 1000 accidental deaths

What’s left? Justifiable homicides? A lot more that what they list.

    • Weerd Beard says:

We know how the antis are with numbers. Just look at the VPC “Conceal carry killers” BS. Quite possibly the remainder might be “Homicide not otherwise specified”, which would likely be for people like Trayvon Martin who was killed with a gunshot, but still over a year later it hasn’t been ruled as either a murder, or a justified homicide. In Boston around 70% of our murders are unsolved because of witness intimidation by the gangs, I’m sure Chicago is vastly worse. Not sure if unsolved gang killings are considered anything at all, as with no hearing there is no murder, by nature of law.

I’d be willing to bet the Justifiable homicide number is indeed as small as they cite as most defensive gun uses don’t have a shot fired, and most of the defensive cases are done with handguns, which produce very survivable wounds.

  6. Volfram says:

Oh man, that graphic is embarrassing. I’d think with fifty-million gun owners in the US, we could get the “Justifiable Homicide” number up over 1000 at least. Clearly we need to shoot more bad guys. That’s a terrible KDA ratio.

    • Weerd Beard says:

I think the metric of success is all wrong. Hell, as I’ve cited, Joan seems to thinks that justifiable homicides are too low to show a case of need for armed citizens….meanwhile when Justifiable homicide rises in places like Florida because concealed carry is on the rise, and Stand Your Ground laws remove doubt from when a person can and should defend their life, that’s also a bad thing.

Still we’re just talking in a metric chosen by the antis. You’ll notice when talking weapons and ammunition we talk “Stopping Power”, not “Killing Power” when it comes to self defense. They will talk about (in so many words) “Killing Power” when it comes to hunting. With hunting a day in the field with no shots fired is better than a day at work. A shot fired and a wounded animal that isn’t recovered is tragic, an animal that took multiple follow up shots to be taken is sad, and an animal that dropped dead in its tracks before it even knew it was being hunted is a story to be shared with friends.

Meanwhile in self defense a criminal who died of complications in the Hospital AFTER he raped, robbed, and murdered is senseless, a dead criminal on the sidewalk BEFORE a crime could be committed is a clean shoot, but is no different than a criminal who was resuscitated by EMTs and ER staff (so long as you don’t think of the shortcommings of our judicial system), still none of this is as good as simply having to draw your gun and maybe shout a word of encouragement or two.

And of course the best day is a day when we never need to clear leather except to put the gun in the safe for the night. If you look at the violent crime numbers over the last few years, as well as the number of guns sold, and permits issued, I think we can see we’re doing damn near PERFECT…ESPECIALLY with those low justifiable homicide numbers!

      • Volfram says:

Totally agree with everything in your post even though I only read about half of it before hitting “Reply.” No decent gun owner seriously wants to kill ANYBODY, and I at least hope I never have to make the choice.

I was trying to be silly and sarcastic, and that doesn’t translate well through the internet.

Fun story, actually: Voice actor J. Michael Tatum of Funimation Studios was at the supermarket one day. Now, he is a large man(has talked of cosplaying Scar from Fullmetal Alchemist, one of the characters he’s provided his voice for over the years. That kind of large.), and there was an even larger man there who was making trouble. Mr. Tatum managed shame the man into leaving the store by calling him out on his bad behavior, and on the way out, the man walked up to Mr. Tatum and said “I think I could take you.”

“Sir… if I had a gun, or a knife, would it even matter?”

Suddenly the man and his wife couldn’t leave fast enough. No gun was even present, the IDEA of a gun halted the conflict cold.

        • Weerd Beard says:

Something tells me Mr. Tatum was doing more than thinking up that retort.

And again, both armed and strong people quickly learn the LAST thing they want is to have to use those abilities.

Also I just looked up pictures of Mr. Tatum, and I’ve met MANY a big strong, yet nerdy guy, and they can appear deceptively weak which can often lead to them needing to fight more often than the jocks and bros who look more willing to fight then the pale nerdy guy with glasses and an Anime T-Shirt….but 20″ fore-arms…

          • Volfram says:

While I’ve never gotten wind of his actual political affiliation(or his opinion on guns), I’m fairly sure J. Michael Tatum is a very left-wing Liberal. He hates Intelligent Design and thinks it shouldn’t be taught anywhere, especially in Science classes and he lives with his boyfriend of… I think 14 years now. Also, after the exchange, a manager asked if he’d like someone to walk him out to his car, and he meekly replied “yes please.”

You have a point, though. Personally I think I might be more afraid of his (incredibly talented) friend and co-worker Brina Palencia and her brother Gino. Not only are the two an insidious pranking duo(http//www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJfh3z6U50o&feature=player_detailpage#t=1076s), but her husband is a lawyer.
