“Gun Death” Vodka Bottle

Where’s the “Common Sense Solution” Here?

The Ohio prostitute accused of stabbing to death a Brother Rice High School teacher over the price of illicit services once beat a woman with a gallon-sized glass vodka bottle over money, records show.

…Walker was charged at the time with misdemeanor domestic battery and bail violation charges that were later dropped. But they’re among a handful of Cook County arrests that trail the woman from the Rust Belt city of Akron and show that she’s no stranger to the Chicago area.

Walker is being held without bail at Cook County Jail, charged with the Jan. 18 stabbing death of Brother Rice teacher Alan Filan.

So we have prostituion, which is legal. Weapons in the multiple cases are fists (hard to ban those) a vodka bottle (legal), and a kitchen knife (ubiquitous).

Further we have a violent and anti-social person with a long arrest record not being convicted of any crimes until she actually killed somebody.

Seems to me the REAL common sense is teaching those who are the most danger (again I have large glass vodka bottles, knives, and fists, but I seem to manage to only use those things legally, as do most people) that we live in a civilized society, not pure anarchy.

When cops simply have a catch-and-release program until somebody is dead, that really looks a lot more like anarchy to me.

Wait, prostitution is legal in Chicago, now?*

    * For those other than the rich and powerful, anyway.

It’s all well and good to say the people should learn to control themselves and behave.

It doesn’t work. There are people who are controlling themselves who are sociopaths, and they don’t care about the harm they do to others. They are completely lacking in empathy. They feel no more guilt about hurting other people than I would for stepping on an ant.

Now I don’t hate ants, but I am not particularly worried about hurting their feelings when I kill them – whether on purpose or by accident.

Approximately 4% of the population are sociopaths. They don’t all go on killing sprees – many are quite successful in middle-management positions, sales, police, and especially the military, as well as other socially useful careers where empathy is a hindrance rather than a help. One in a thousand grows up to be Son of Sam, one in a million turns into Hitler, Mussolini, or Caligula, and they usually end up dying young, violently, and not in bed.

Given that, it seems to me that “REAL common sense” is not to trust strangers, especially prostitutes and other members of the criminal class.

    • Weerd Beard says:

In Dave Grossman’s boon “On Killing” he estimated it as high as 10%. I would certainly say that any estimate of sociopathy in the general population will be under estimated for no other reason that sociopaths are not islands of humanity, they have morals, they have judgment, and they love and care.

Also the worst serial killers and mass-murderers had a COMBINATION of psychopathy, abuse, and a horrible home life. That’s the magic cocktail that gives what is actually a fairly benign condition such a social stigma.

That and most of the people WITH it will never know, because unless they get the VERY specific tests for the disease, there’s no way of knowing for sure. Further unless they turn into an antisocial monster, nobody will care.

  3. I believe prostitution is only legal in the U.S. in rural Nevada counties (so don’t get fooled by all the flyers handed to you on the Strip, prostitution is VERY illegal in Vegas!).
