Just to Re-Hash a Subject.

Jeff Quinn has a New Review up of a Phlip shotgun that looks pretty cool.

He talks about birdshot for Home defense and I got a little butthurt in the comments. Hopefully I didn’t ruffle too many feathers.

I wrote a long post on shotgun ballistics here also triggered by a video by Jeff.

In looking at that post I noticed that I reviewed it again here.

Operative video here:

Again, I don’t choose to use my shotgun as I find a 1911 to be a better home defense gun, and in the event I want a long-arm I’d prefer my FAL. Still I keep #00 buck loads for “Social” applications. He does make a compelling argument for birdshot.

“Gun Death” New York

NYC really desn’t have low “Gun Death” it also lots of non-gun deaths.

A 21-year-old woman and her two toddler daughters were stabbed to death Sunday night in an apparent triple homicide in Jamaica, Queens, cops said.

Deisy Garcia and her two girls, ages 1 and 2, were found stabbed multiple times each in an apartment on Sutphin Blvd. near 90th Ave. just after 7 p.m., cops said.

Police recovered multiple knives on the scene and were looking for Garcia’s husband, cops said.

Thank goodness for laws that leave the innocent defenseless as they live within the confines of the city. Also a note that knives are a common item in most houses, but most houses don’t see these kind of brutal murders.

Its the person, not the tool that is the danger!

“Less Regulated Than Teddy Bears”

Another lie of the antis. Springfield discovered a problem with the New XDS Pistol.

Given that they are “Less Regulated Than Teddy Bears” and the problem likely wasn’t dangerous, nor were there any documented accidental discharges, Springfield did nothing…

Yep, another big lie! Guns being recalled for an “Issue” that never actually occurred, and possibly would never occur is commonplace.

**UPDATE**
In case somebody has seen the many Memes and talking points here’s a VPC poster that sums it up

“Gun Death” Maryland Exorcism

Well, even in lands of extreme gun control you get crazy stories:

Police in Maryland have charged two women with murder in the deaths of two children who were killed during an apparent exorcism attempt….Police say the two younger children who died suffered multiple stab wounds, but did not reveal any more information about the exorcism attempt, citing the ongoing investigation.

Crazy! I’m curious what this lunatic was thinking…if they were thinking at all. Even if they exercised the “demon” the children were still dead. Of course they’re just insane, so that argument is moot.

This is not a “Gun Death” and because of that this isn’t a mass killing that will be reported by all the “Progressive” blogs. Still, comforting that Maryland is so oppressive to gun owners, right?

Smart Video

The antis have been following The playbook and they aren’t openly fostering a debate or discussing their end game, or what they see as “Reasonable”. The last year shows it isn’t a winning strategy. Too many people are paying attention. But the moment they stop paying attention we’re in real danger.

Still I’m amused that you’ll NEVER see talking points as logical and concise as these from the other side. Its WHY they aren’t winning.

“Trick” Ammo

Saw this video over at ENDO:

Ever since the world departed from basic FMJ, Lead Ball, and soft point into Hollow point ammo, the world has been looking for the “Next Best Thing”. Most of it is hype, like the expansion post on the Federal Hydra Shok (which is a great JHP round, but that little stud in the middle of the cavity does virtually nothing), and the Glaser Safety Slug. And there are countless strange loads out there from flechettes, to ultra-light high-velocity ammo, to odd frangibles, to duplex and even more multiple-projectile loads.

The “Trick” is a round that will punch through hard surfaces, but still expand, while possibly claiming lower penetration on building materials.

I think its best summed up by this test of the ExtremeShock ammo over at Box O Truth.

ExtremeShock promised it all. Great penetration, great stopping power, and yet not over penetrating building surfaces. Ideally you can shoot a bad guy and zap him dead, but errant shots won’t harm family members in adjacent rooms, or leave your home to potentially hurt neighbors.

Go read the whole review and check out, as well as Old Painless’ simple but effective and repeatable “backyard” testing methods. As far as I can tell ExtremShock was overly optimistic of their product. I don’t blame them, they’re in the game to make money and sell ammo.

G2R ammo is NOT ExtremeShock, but as far as I’m concerned, as cool as their videos look, I won’t trust it until I see some very detailed 3rd Party tests.

Me, my carry ammo boils down into 3 cartridges. All in the Speer/Federal ammo family. Federal HST 230Gr +P .45 ACP. Federal 147gr +P+ .38 Special Hydra Shok and Speer Gold Dot .357 Magnum (the ammo in my gun is 125grain, I’d prefer the 158).

That’s as fancy as I get. I like a heavy bullet being pushed as fast as possible to maximize both penetration and energy, and a quality bullet to retain weight and give consistent expansion.

These are my personal favorites, and in no way do I limit these choices. I’d be perfectly happy with a Remington Golden Saber, or a Winchester Ranger T, or any other ammo that is a common choice for Law Enforcement. I prefer heavier bullets because I feel they make a more consistent wound channel, and are more likely to expand if they hit soft tissue only, bone, or a combination, still with my 125 grain .357 its not 158 grain, but its not in the ultra-light category. I’m not interested in the very light hyper-fast rounds some companies offer, but above those weights the difference is minimum.

There is no magic bullet, I pick one I like, and then make sure my shooting is good enough where I can hit my target, hopefully multiple times.

If a “Magic Bullet” is discovered and proven by multiple independent sources, I’ll probably buy new carry ammo…but then again how much better will they be than this stuff that is so well proven?

“Gun Death” School Violence

This would be called a “School Shooting” if only it was a “Gun Death”

Officials say a 16-year-old student was critically injured in a hammer attack across the street from his Southern California high school.

City of Chino spokeswoman Michelle Van Der Linden says a man hit the student in the head Thursday afternoon across from Chino High School. The boy was flown to a hospital where he’s in critical condition.

Obviously we need a hammer-free School Zone! It would have prevented this!

Great Story

Jerry is known for Revolver shooting, but he’s also a wizard with a 1911, among other guns.

Both my 1911s came to me with Full-length guide rods:

Yin-Yang

Both rods are in the trash somewhere. Of course they aren’t 100% JMB approved parts. They have extended safeties, beavertail grip safeties with the “Speed Bump”, quality sights that were unknown in the early 20th century, as well as S&W’s external extractors which weren’t for the original 1911s, but you might have trouble arguing that John Browning didn’t prefer extractors like that.

The carry gun has a Scandium alloy frame and slim profile grips, which make it a joy to carry. Still the parts I took out did nothing for the guns, the parts I put in simplified and made them better.
