About that “Tanks and Nukes” Argument

While I was sitting around today I was thinking about that stupid “So you’re for people owning Nuclear weapons?” “Oh so you’re in favor of restrictions!” Argument.

I think the best blanket response we can have is to note that Nuclear weapons and other explosive items are restricted by the ATF with the FEL licences, things like Tank guns, auto-cannons, mounted machine guns, shoulder-fired rockets, and other such firearms are NFA items.

Currently, no matter how you feel about any of these items, one way or another, these laws are NOT being challenged. Also frankly if any challenges arrive, they will be incremental ones, like removing the Hughes Amendment, or taking Suppressors or Short Barreled firearms off the list. I certainly don’t see the whole NFA or FEL laws being taken off the books with one stroke of the pen.

So the next time one of these extreme arguments are put on the table, note that these arms are NOT being discussed for legalization, or liberalization at the moment. WHAT IS being discussed is restrictions on magazines (and there’s no reason to talk about 50 or 100 Rounders, because they’re talking TEN) and Semi-auto and “Non Sporting” firearms.

Everything else is arguing past the point, and my opinions of those things are irrelevant at this moment. Even if I want to be able to own a tactical nuke, a cluster bomb, or a fully armed Blackhawk Gunship, or an AC130 attack aircraft, its irrelevant, because the talk right now is CONFISCATION of basic rifles, shotguns, pistols and magazines.

We can talk about all that other stuff when bills are being introduced to legalize them. Until then, let’s not waste time talking building resort casinos on Mars, or ending the use of fossil fuels with cold-fusion power, because all of those things aren’t happening right now.

What do you think? And if you like this pass it on, both in the internet, and in your discussions with people who are thinking these issues have ANY place in the political discussion right now.

Who’s The Irrational One

Also I love at the end how he claims that Larry retreated from the interview, when he damn well knew how much time with the guest he had.

BTW I love the bait-and-switch tactics of the antis. They talk about extreme and ridiculous measures like if citizens should own tanks and attack helicopters (which simply isn’t an issue at all), or say “100 round magazines”, when what’s on the table is bans on semi-auto rifles and magazines holding more than 10.

We can debate the extremes all we want, but in the end those extremes aren’t even in the political arena right now. Even if I was personally opposed to attack helicopters, and nukes (I’m really not, as justifiable use of those items in a functioning society is hard to justify, so the point is moot. Own your Apache with a 20mm Auto-cannon, and air-to-ground missiles, good luck USING those things without society comming down on you HARD…and if you DON’T use those things, but just have them, who fucking cares?) we’re not talking about that, we’re talking about being able to own a S&W M&P9c with its 12 round magazine, vs a 10. Or owning a semi-auto rifle.

These things aren’t even in the same league, and saying you’re OK with the restrictions on 20mm Auto Cannons, or claymore mines, means you’re 100% fine with banning a semi-auto target rifle, or an 11 shot magazine is childish.

It is a shame Larry couldn’t stick around longer, we all know he was looking at his watch the whole time because he had work to do, and winning over this little puke wasn’t a priority over getting his message out. I’ve certainly had DOZENS of antis literally run from the arena with no excuses given. We know where they stand.

Joan Peterson Fisk

Joan hasn’t been putting out anything useful as of late, but this post is in rare form:

Efforts to arm and train teachers can only result in a new market for guns. If the ludicrous idea to arm teachers went anywhere, teachers would go out and buy guns. And, if they are to actually have them in the classroom, they will have to be trained of course. So off they go to the gun permit training classes. Unless of course, you live in Virginia, where you can get a permit with just a one hour on-line training class with no requirements to handle a gun or know anything about a gun. Oh yes, and you can get a Virginia permit easily even if you live in another state. Or in Arizona where not even a permit is required to carry a loaded gun in public. Same in Vermont, Alaska and Wyoming. So that would mean that teachers can carry these weapons with nary a moment of training in how to use a lethal weapon. Raise your hand if you think that’s a good idea. Gun deaths in these states? You can check out this report from the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence for much more information about gun laws in the states and why they actually matter.

Love the old “You need training” meme. She notes that four states now have done away with their permit entirely, many more states have no training requirement, and even more have training so minimal I doubt people retain much of it a week after the class.

Yet where are the massive spike in gun accidents, negligent shootings, or people improperly justifying lethal force in these states? Oh and note her “justification” comes from the Joyce Foundations’ AstroTurf group.

When Wayne LaPierre’s CEO picked former Congressman Asa Hutchinson to shepherd his ideas about arming teachers through the media, he knew what he was doing. Hutchinson has ties to some private security companies.

Remember, conflict of interest ONLY exists from the opposition. Joan gets her primary paychecks from the Joyce Foundation for her work at Protect Minnesota, and she constantly references the Joyce Foundation as “justification” for her outlandish and false claims. Yet somebody with ties with a training groups can’t be trusted. LOL!

Hmmmm. The hypocrisy is stunning. But if you don’t like this idea, then, how about the absolutely nutty decision by the country’s craziest Sheriff, Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Arizona. He has ordered armed posse members to patrol the perimiter of schools in his county:

Why is this nutty? Have there been mass shootings in Arizona? Has there been negligence on behalf of the patrols? Do the students even know they’re there, as they wear no uniforms, and are issued no equipment? Seems like saving money is “Nutty” to Joan.

“And then there was Jacob Cutler. According to a Flagstaff police report, Cutler threw his girlfriend to the ground and choked her while trying to sexually assault her in 2008. When she didn’t cooperate, he allegedly threatened to call police and said they would side with him, because he “has a badge.” He was a member of Arpaio’s posse at the time.”

This isn’t anything unique to the Arizona group, you see crap like this in police forces all the time. Of course Joan is just after THIS group because she can site two bad members, not Police in general, which she gives carte balance to posses not only, civilian guns (and carry them EVERYWHERE) but full-auto and other NFA weapons. Further, Joan has been very vocal against the Indiana law that allows civilians to use deadly force against violent criminals committing crimes…EVEN IF THEY HAVE A BADGE!

And let’s hope that one or more people in the state of Indiana won’t decide to blow a police officer away and do so legally. Really? Indeed. It’s a new law. One can shoot a police officer now in Indiana and do so legally:

Hubbard, a 17-year veteran of the Police Department in Jeffersonville, Ind., says his apprehension stems from a state law approved this year that allows residents to use deadly force in response to the “unlawful intrusion” by a “public servant” to protect themselves and others, or their property.

Lovely double-standard there Joan!

Never mind. These are the folks that the NRA is offering up to protect our children from the “bad guys” with guns. These are the “good guys with guns” that we should trust to take care of school security. Good grief. But that is the twisted logic of the NRA and it’s leaders and lobbyists. The decision of the NRA to let Wayne LaPierre have a press event with no questions asked where he suggested that the solution to gun violence is more guns was a mistake. Since that time, many NRA members have gone public with their distaste and disenchantment with the organization. Public polling is not going their way.

Joan again is citing that bogus MAIG Poll. Not only does MAIG also take money from the Joyce Foundation, but this bogus poll seems to be the next iteration of the bogus Arthur Kellerman study saying that guns in the home are more likely to do bad things than good. It isn’t true, but they’ll keep citing it so the lazy and uninformed will believe it, and vote accordingly. Hopefully with the internet, and social groups this won’t work THIS TIME, as it has in the past.

This being the case, how can the NRA sit at the table of discussion with any real intent to stop shootings when the organization’s ties to the gun industry benefit from shootings and the sale of weapons after each mass shooting? How can it be that an industry that makes weapons designed to kill people and particularly assault rifles designed to be used by the military to kill as many people as possible benefit from the death of 20 small children? It’s beyond belief really and beyond what is acceptable and within the bounds of common sense and common decency.

Again comes the carte blanche to the police. Cops carry pistols with magazines holding 12-17 rounds depending on department issue, and most patrol officers have “Patrol Rifles” which of course is just a less evil way of calling rifles “Assault Weapons” because cops have them. Are cops roving hit squads? Are they state-funded executioners? Joan will say its so they aren’t outgunned by criminals (who aren’t using rifles, “Assault” or otherwise”. Still in situations like the North Hollywood shootout, this is when Police stand down and wait for the SWAT team, which is more of a military arm than a police force, will armored vehicles, machine guns, body armor, air support, and grenade launchers. Sorry, Joan, cops carry guns for the EXACT same reason as I do, to defend themselves and others from criminals. The only difference between cops and citizens is the citizens are the ones in danger and CALLING THE COPS. Thanks I’ll keep my guns, I might need them.

More lies. The NRA is misrepresenting the majority of its’ members who want reasonable gun laws. If the leaders of the organization can look the families of shooting victims in the eye and explain to them why universal background checks on all gun sales is a bad idea, let’s hear it. If they can look Gabrielle Giffords in the eye and tell her why a ban on high capacity magazines is a bad idea, let them speak up.

Again, her idea of “misrepresentation of membership” is an anti-gun poll with very questionable methods, and when it comes to looking Gabrielle Giffords in the eye…well they can’t…because when she was in the public eye and available for discussion she wasn’t anti-gun. Now that she has retired from politics and not giving meetings with the public, she’s talking of gun bans. All of this said in Joan’s blog with heavily moderated comments. Joan we WANT to discuss the issue with you…you won’t let us. You want an echo chamber and a non-debate.

Lastly she talks a bit about James Yeager and his permit:

Yup. Thank you Tennessee Department of Safety. This guy means business. Just listen to his ridiculous and paranoid words in the video. He is spouting the NRA’s drivel and fear mongering and worse. The thing is, people like this have guns and lots of them. They are insurrectionists ready to commit treason. Now that the country may actually pass some reasonable gun reforms, these guys are dissembling. Really, dear readers, don’t believe a word he is saying. No one is going to come and confiscate his guns. No one is taking away any God given rights. No one is setting the Constitution on fire. People like this are the problem in this country.

Umm, Joan, Tennessee was being a chicken shit on this issue. James Yeager STILL has lots of guns, and can STILL carry and use them (just not with a legal permit anymore). If he DOES mean business, then nothing has changed, as murder is more illegal than carrying without a permit.

Again the anti-gun logic of “If guns were as illegal as murder, nobody would be murdered with guns”. This logic only makes sense to them.

Now throughout this post she talks about the “paranoia” of gun owners about confiscations. She sums it up best in the comment section:

Where did you see that anyone on the gun control side want to confiscate guns and get rid of the second amendment. That is a lie and you seem to believe. More’s the pity, Mark. There are very few comments on the side of reasonable gun control that come close to matching the gun rights extremists. I have experienced those so I know very well what they say. We’ve been over this before. Try as you might, you just can’t defend what is being said on your side of this discussion. It should be embarrassing to you and reprehensible to any person with integrity but I guess not. I am not going back and forth with you any more about this, Mark. If I were you, I wouldn’t defend what is being said by your side of this discussion. Where have you experienced it on this blog? Stop now, Mark before you say some things that make you look bad.

Chris in Alaska gives some good citations of people on Joan’s side that are VERY happy with the idea of confiscation.

He missed one key person. JOAN PETERSON!

I guess your definition of confiscation is different than mine. From the article you linked:” More than 160,000 handguns have been surrendered by their owners since new laws were introduced following the Dunblane massacre, the UK Government has revealed.”

Confiscate- ” To seize (private property) for the public treasury.
2. To seize by or as if by authority. See Synonyms at appropriate.
adj. (knf-skt, kn-fskt)
1. Seized by a government; appropriated.
2. Having lost property through confiscation.”

Gun owners in UK were compensated for their guns turned in though it took longer than they expected.

Joan, you are OPENLY coming for our guns, and you are such a coward that you’ll pretend you aren’t, and then send total strangers to do your dirty work. Why do you think Joan is so upset by the Indiana law against shooting Cops engaging in criminal acts? That would REALLY make the door-to-door confiscations sticky, wouldn’t it?

Bruz40 Post Workout

Rippin a 40 After a workout:

There’s a science to it!

Beer quenches thirst and is frequently consumed after practicing sport or exercise. Beer is mainly water but also contains alcohol. Does this alcohol content prevent adequate recovery and/or rehydration? To clarify this, sixteen healthy young male volunteers, moderate consumers of beer, performed, at 35ºC, two exhausting and dehydrating exercise bouts (60 min running in a treadmill) three weeks apart. After exercise, the subjects rehydrate for 2h, in one occasion only with water and, in the other, first with beer (660 ml) followed by water. Immediately before and after exercise, and after rehydration, a number of variables that could be influenced by exercise, hydration or alcohol were measured. These variables include: body composition, extended blood and urine analysis, plasma volume, markers of muscle damage and inflammation, immunologic parameters, and psychokinetic assessment (including measurements of coordination, attention, stimuli discrimination, perception-reaction time, and visual field). In none of these parameters we found neither a specific nor a negative effect that could be attributed to the intake of beer compared to the intake of just water. In conclusion, at least in healthy, young adults, beer in moderate amounts is as effective as water for rehydration and recovery after exercise.

You can download his presentation with methods, results, and statistical analysis in the link!

It also can be noted that the hydration dorks who say you should never drink anything containing diuretics such as alcohol or caffeine as it will do more dehydration than re-hydration. This of course is obvious bullshit, and I’m living proof. Throughout my day about 90% of the liquids I consume are caffeine containing tea or other beverages. If I was dehydrating I’d know it by now.

I also liked his added benefit of happiness. If a nice cold beer or two after a hard workout is an enjoyable thing or a good reward, this makes things even better for you.

So be healthy and happy people!

“Gun Death” Subway Push

This is an interesting story on both the “Gun Death” issue as well as the gun rights issue:

New York City police have been searching for a woman who fled a Queens subway station after witnesses said she fatally pushed a man in front of an oncoming train.

So not only was no gun needed to commit this horrible death, but it also puts some question into the trust issue when it comes to guns. People who use the metric of “Gun Death” will claim that some people can’t be trusted with guns, and since these people aren’t readily detectable if they have a clean record, NOBODY should have guns.

Yet these same people will be perfectly willing to stand on the subway or train platform, while the train approaches. We’re all just one shove away from being murdered. The reason why we all haven’t witnessed a murder like this is the REASON why we need LESS restrictions on firearms. This is not something most people will do, so if they were allowed to carry guns, they would not use them for horrible crimes like this.

An Actual Chior Boy

Shot in Boston

A 13-year-old boy is in critical condition after he was shot Friday evening on his way to choir practice.

When Boston police arrived, they found the teen laying in the street with a gunshot wound.

He was shot by somebody in a gray car. Sounds gang related. Can’t be, as guns are so heavily restricted in Boston.

When I read the headline I thought somebody was joking, as generally when a “Choir Boy” is shot in Boston, the term is used Ironically.

KSG Price Hike

Looks like Kel-Tec is raising the price of their KSG with the threat of a pending ban.

Frankly I don’t blame them, as they spent a lot of money creating this gun from essentially scratch, and expected in their business model to pay off that cost over time with the sale of a lot of units. If it gets banned this year they won’t sell any more units except to exempted agencies which I suspect aren’t buying many shotguns, especially funky shotguns with lots of new technology.

Still I wonder if this is just political hoopla, as Kel-Tec has NEVER had a supply chain. You simply can’t find their guns when you want them, be it the relatively new KSG or the PMR 30, or older guns like the Sub 2000 or the SU-16. So I wonder how much this price bump is going to help given how few guns they are able to produce from the factory.

Also, while I admire them for making unique guns, the problems the KSG addresses would have simply been better addressed by doubling down on production of simpler, more proven technology like the Sub 2000 and the SU-16, which can do everything the KSG does, with less moving parts, and less novel technology which as of yet is technically unproven.

This price hike will effect NOBODY, as if you want a KSG its not like you’re going to find one anyway.

On James Yeager’s Carry Permit

So James Yeager got his carry permit suspended.

A Middle Tennessee firearms trainer who made an ominous comment about killing people in a YouTube video that gained national attention this week has had his handgun carry permit suspended Friday by the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security.

James Yeager, 42, had his permit suspended based on a “material likelihood of risk of harm to the public,” the department said in a statement.

Col. Tracy Trott of the Tennessee Department of Safety said it didn’t take him long to reach a decision after viewing the comments on the Internet.

Look, I’m no fan of James Yeager, and I’ve spoken quite a bit about his recent upswing in outlandish and potentially criminal videos here on this blog. Still, I’m a Freedom Loving American, and I say with no qualms that the 1st Amendment is not to protect your right to tweet your lunch on twitter, but to protect horrible groups like the KKK or the Westboro Baptist Church.

This is nothing but political grandstanding and bullshit. This situation really only boils down to two potential things. Either A) James Yeager is a dangerous sociopath who will kill people who shouldn’t justifiably be killed or B) Yeager is cowardly blowhard who likes to run his mouth.

Occam’s Razor points to the B) Option. Still, what does taking away his piece of paper do? He still has guns, he’s still a free man, and if option A is true, he still can commit crimes.

In my opinion, Tennessee is being even MORE of a cowardly blowhard than Yeager is. If James Yeager has committed a crime, arrest and charge him, then take away his rights that way. Don’t play foolish games that don’t do ANYTHING.

As I said before, if you have worked or were instructed under one of Mr. Yeager’s institutions, get some less controversial training IMMEDIATELY! I mean THIS WEEKEND! That’s likely too short notice (tho you had months to plan), still if you end up having to defend your life with deadly force, the more Mr. Yeager gets in the news for questionable acts, the more likely his bad judgement will be placed on YOU in a court of law.

I wouldn’t want to be in that situation. Sometimes justifiable homicide cases are VERY cut and dry, other times they’re clear, but like Mr. Zimmerman is experiencing right now, can be polluted by evil people with political motivations. Other cases can be pretty murky. You do NOT want this albatross hung around your neck.

Mr. Yeager’s foolish actions have likely forever suspended his right to lawful self defense. He’s threatened to murder people for things as small as a simple insult, or an unflattering opinion voiced. No matter what an attacker has been done, if Yeager acts with violence against that person these instances will be raised in the court, and likely he’ll lose his case and the remainder of his freedoms.

You do NOT want to be in that situation!

“Gun Death” Mass Murder, Fire

What’s to blame?

More than six years after two children burned to death in an SUV in Los Angeles, their father has pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder….Yun, who was separated from his wife, picked up the children for lunch and a movie, then drove to an industrial area and put gasoline-soaked rags around the vehicle. His daughter got out but he pulled her back inside before igniting the rags.

What are we going to blame for this horrible murder? Cars? Rags? Lighters? Gasoline? Hell maybe we should ban divorce?

Or maybe we should just lock up the monsters, because their tools are irrelevant.

More of Them Not Thinking Things Through

So there’s the silly meme of “Register Guns Like Cars”…to which I say SURE! They don’t really consider the scope of the law, and what that means…instead they want to take just a small portion of the law and apply it wherever they want.

A more absurd example would be like them saying “You register your car, so why not register all your socks!” Sorry guys it needs to make sense first for us to bite.

Now have a read of this. “7 things that are harder than buying a gun”

In many states, you have to register in advance to vote, sometimes by as much as 30 days. Under federal law, you can buy a gun on the day you decide you want one.

Of course most states openly BAN the requirement for any positive ID, so is that the best analogy? Also they set up voter registration stations EVERYWHERE, Malls, Subway Stations, Street corners. Also the registration rolls have minimal oversight. Frequently college towns push to register students who aren’t legal residents.

Take Sudafed for your cold symptoms? Due to its connection with methamphetamine, federal law limits the amount pseudoephedrine (antihistamine) you can buy in a month. Federal law says nothing about how many guns you can purchase in one transaction.

Also like Gun Control, the pseudoephedrine restrictions were put in place to limit the production of illegal meth…have you noticed how people aren’t using meth anymore? Nice idea, citing a law that doesn’t work as justifications for other laws that don’t work. Also there are some laws in place that treat larger sales different than smaller ones, but its pretty obvious that factual arguments aren’t going to be used here.

To get a cell phone contract, you have to provide your social security number. It’s the same when signing up for many utilities services. When buying a gun, providing a social security number is not necessary.

…But supplying a SSN is an OPTION! I’ve never filled out the optional line when buying a gun, I know others who have when contesting a NICS denial. You see the system is built so that there are tons of false denials for every person who is actually denied a transaction, usually the addition of the SSN clears that up. So what’s the point you’re trying to make?

The FDA prohibits most dogs in restaurants in all fifty states. Forty-nine states (all but Illinois) allow concealed firearms to be carried in public.

So a living entity with its own free will is EXACTLY like guns? This is just pure lack of thought. Dogs aren’t allowed in restaurants because they are living animals, they’re covered with allergens, they are self-contained colonies of bacteria, and they excrete harmful waste. Guns are pieces of metal, plastic, and wood, often lubed with oil. Kinda like cars…which we send through the drive-through. Of course also if we think about this a little bit, many of us have dogs. Of those people, all of you have kitchens. All but a few of you regularly use said kitchen to prepare food. How many of you have become ill or died because you have a dog in the home where you prepare and eat food? Man if we were to THINK, we might have a good discussion about that!

Houston lawmakers recently proposed a law which would require all strippers to get permits to take off their clothes. In the same state of Texas, no permit is necessary to purchase an assault rifle.

Here’s a good one. Is Houston licensing strippers for a reason other than shaking them down for money? Is there a major health risk from unlicensed strippers? Yeah, they’re really going to hang their hat on this one.

Due to zoning laws in Miami-Dade county in Florida, liquor stores must be built 2,000 feet away from churches. Concealed guns can be carried into churches. Last year, in St. Petersburg, Fla., a pastor’s daughter was accidentally shot by a gun-carrying congregant.

Huhhh? Seriously? More bullshit blue laws from the puritans and you’re actually claiming this is GOOD? Why don’t you talk about laws requiring blacks to drink from water fountains and sit in special spots on the bus, but not for gun owners? This is REALLY your argument?

In order to get open water scuba diving certification in Colorado, certification courses of up to three days are required; these include classroom sessions, pool dives, and open water practice dives. To meet the qualification for a concealed carry permit, you can take a 90-minute online course called “Introduction to Pistol Safety,” with no actual shooting practice, and be on your way.

Ok first they’re over-simplifying the issue. Some states, like Florida have such a system. You take a simple class and go through some silly motions and you get your permit. Other states have range qualifications and DAYS of class. Other states don’t have any training…or any permits. So we have a nice petri dish of variables here…and there is no noticeable difference negligent, ignorant, or foolish behavior by gun owners. Sorry, the classes simply aren’t necessary. I wrote a great post about it a while back.

Now I’m licensed to carry in most states, and I’m a certified SCUBA diver (BTW which is good in ALL states, and never needs to be renewed…sign me up for that!), and the stuff they teach you in SCUBA class is pretty different than in carry class. In Carry class they spend a little bit of time on how to align sights, load unload, and safely handle a gun, the different types of guns, and how to press the trigger. Most of the talk is about laws.

In SCUBA we have a little bit of law talk (like you’re not allowed to dive without a diver flag flying), and things like the different types of gear, and what things are used for. But Much of the class is teaching you things that might be counter-intuitive. The four rules of gun safety are REALLY intuitive. Add in the “Keep the Gun Unloaded when you aren’t using it” bit, and its REALLY easy to not have a problem.

Did you know that if you hold your breath while at depth your could rupture your lungs while on SCUBA? Did you know that if you’ve been at depth for a length of time, simply swimming to the surface might kill you? There are also tasks we needed to do that really don’t have a parallel to gun training, unless you’re in some of the more outlandish “Tactical Carbine” courses. Things like how to take off, and put all your gear back on WHILE AT DEPTH, say in the event that your tank or vest gets tangled.

Really the two aren’t comparable, but that sure doesn’t stop them, does it?

Thinking really isn’t something they do much of when talking about the issue. If only they MEANT it when they say we need a “Serious Debate” about guns.
