Clip vs Magazine

I’m not too crazy about the confusion of the terms, but when it comes to laws, confusing the terms is downright shameful.

I think the origin of the confusion comes from World War II when the soldiers were issued a number of different firearms with the designation of “M1”. The M1 Garand was loaded with 8-round En-Bloc clips. Meanwhile the M1 Carbine and the M1 Thompson both were loaded with detachable magazines.

Since soldiers were issued ammo in different containers, I can see how the terms could be easily confused. But its 2013 now, people! The only time clips are used is in shooting military surplus guns like the Garand, or the SKS, or when soldiers are given clips of ammo to faster reload their magazines.

A simple rule of thumb, if it has a spring in it, and it actually feeds rounds into the chamber of a gun, its a MAGAZINE, if it is just a piece of metal or other material (like those cardboard and metal chargers for the Swiss K31) that holds the rounds together for easier feeding into the magazine, then its a CLIP.

Writing Laws For Crimes that Didn’t Violate Them

In 1934 the NFA was enacted, and it was pushed by the horrible crimes of people like Al Capone, John Dillinger, and Bonnie and Clyde, among many other Prohibition and Great Depression era criminals.

Of course the guns used were most often stolen from police or military armories, and Capone even kept a few Chicago cops on his personal payroll. The NFA was passed in the names of criminals who weren’t affected by it.

In 1968 the Gun Control act was enacted in the wake of the assassinations of John and Robert Kennedy, and Martin Luther King. None of these criminals would have been affected by the law.

In 1993 the Brady Bill was enacted in the name of James Brady, who was shot by John Hinkley. Hinkley was mentally ill, but was never committed for it until after the shooting, so again, the law wouldn’t have affected him.

Now the same logic continues:

First, it should be noted that using the term “loophole” to describe the law isn’t completely accurate. It’s not a loophole so much as a poorly written law. Many Virginians and Americans may not realize this, but the Code of Virginia allows for individuals to privately sell firearms, to include the selling of firearms at non-dealer gun shows within the state. In those sales, no background check or waiting period is necessary. You can legally purchase as many firearms as you wish. There have been many attempts over the years to address this issue within the Virginia Code, but thus far no changes have been made. This nation saw many tragedies involving weapons in the past year — Oregon, Colorado, and most recently Sandy Hook. We have and will continue to grieve the loss of life. However, the situation begs the question: If now is not the time to discuss positive reforms, when exactly is?

In Oregon and New Town, the guns were stolen…which is a crime MORE severe than an illegal transaction, and Colorado, the guns were legally purchases with a background check.

If only these people could be a little more openly crazy with their political bell-ringing. Say “In the events of recent tragedies we need to ban all the sales of Cocker Spaniels to people who at the time are invisible!”, it makes just as much sense.

Slow is Smooth, Smooth is Fast

Always listen to your Mom, they may know something!

So I wrote the last post, and realized I need to get my move on so I’d catch my train. Got out the door quick…only to realize I forgot my tea cup. I went back for it and again quickly made my way to the train…when my phone rang. I didn’t properly shut the door in my haste and my house alarm went off. Shit, well I’ll be on the next train.

My Mom told me (after she had been late to an appointment because she had been pulled over for speeding), “Never rush, as you’ll just get there later.”

Sage words!

Register Guns Like Cars

Just Though I’d post a pair of videos about a car Adam Carolla bought that was previously owned by Paul Newman.

The safety features are all dictated by the racing league. The car has no DOT safety features and is not road legal. It doesn’t meet emission standards, even the extra crazy California ones, and likely isn’t registered or inspected by the state.

Yet he owns it perfectly legally, and transports it to the track to race. Let’s talk more about registering cars like guns!

Love those Unqualified Opinions

“The Answer is not fighting violence with violence”.

Try that when “Violence” is on top of you raping you. Try that when “Violence” enters your home at night. Try that when “Violence” ignores the “Gun Free Zone” sign on the door and starts shooting.

So exit question, does Miss New York believe that we shouldn’t have armed police? Aren’t their guns to fight violence with violence?

Of course in the end she’s an idiot, and I’d be no less impressed if she stated that people have the right to keep and bear arms. Her opinions should valued only if they’re limited to fashion, makeup, and how to subsist on 1,000 calories a day without going insane. These are things I’m sure she knows a LOT about.

Another Good Video

From ENDO

The anti brings up Grenade Launchers (an NFA item for both the launcher and EACH grenade if they aren’t chalk of buckshot rounds), and he doesn’t take the bait.

Again, maybe someday we’ll talk about repealing the NFA, but that day is NOT today. Today we’re talking about semi-auto rifles, “Non Sporting” guns, and magazines.

Also interesting that he doesn’t trust his neighbor to own rifles…but he somehow feels safe that they can take a bottle, fill it with gasoline, and throw it through his window? Also why doesn’t he trust armed strangers, but trust them to drive past him on the sidewalk, when they could run him down with ease?

Also note how the host cuts off the guest at the end of the interview.

This is how they think.

When Your Government Fails

You need to protect your town yourself:

Several hundred civilians have taken up arms in two towns in a southwestern Mexico state and are arresting people suspected of crimes and imposing a curfew, leading authorities to promise to reinforce security forces in the area.

People wearing ski masks or bandanas and carrying small arms this week began manning checkpoints on roads into the municipalities of Ayutla de los Libres and Teconoapa in Guerrero state’s Costa Chica area about 75 miles (120 kilometers) southeast of the Pacific resort of Acapulco. Leaders said they were acting against crime and insecurity.

Mexico is now under control of the Cartels, the army and the police force are in their pockets, and the private armies of the Cartels are more powerful than both of them combined. So to keep the peace the people are protecting their own towns. I suspect the masks are to keep Cartel assassins from shooting the new “Sheriff”.

I have a friend who moved down to southern Mexico after college and married a Mexican man. She said there are times when the Cartel makes a move against somebody else you simply don’t leave your home. Think about that, soon I’m going to get up and head to work, why, because its Monday. I’m not concerned about Cartel crossfire, or full-on military battles.

Think of that when you look at the picture in the article. Isn’t it nice that the government of Mexico has both let the state collapse, and only left the people with meager hunting rifles to defend themselves against Drug Soldiers with stolen military weapons.

This is why we can’t let the antis win, ever!

Shopping List For Criminals

White Plains home targeted for gun safe.

A White Plains residence pinpointed on a controversial handgun permit database was burglarized Saturday, and the burglars’ target was the homeowner’s gun safe.

At least two burglars broke into a home on Davis Avenue at 9:30 p.m. Saturday but were unsuccessful in an attempt to open the safe, which contained legally owned weapons, according to a law enforcement source. One suspect was taken into custody, the source said.

The gun owner was not home when the burglary occurred, the source said. The victim, who is in his 70s, told Newsday on Sunday that he did not want to comment while the police investigation continues.

Watch the report for an interview with the neighbor. He can’t recall EVER hearing about a break-in in the neighborhood before. AKA this is a “Good Neighborhood”, still White Plains is easy driving distance from even the worst inner-city territories, and I don’t know the area well enough to know if there are closer spots that might be dodgy.

The people who broke in knew they couldn’t get guns through legal channels, and probably knew people who would pay cash for hot guns. So congrats, antis, you just helped put more illegal guns on the streets! Also other gun owners are at risk of crimes, as most people don’t own just one gun, and with the high event of “gun free zones” even if they have a permit to carry, it doesn’t necessarily mean the gun is on them when they are out of the house.

I thought I’d close with this comment:

Neighbor John Mascia said he thought the gun permit database should not have been published.

“I could [not] care less what they have in their home,” Mascia said.

Great work guys!

“Gun Death” Boat Propeller

This is HORRIBLE!

A University of Virginia student has been killed by a boat propeller while snorkeling off a Caribbean island for a ‘Semester at Sea’ program.

Casey Schulman, 22, died on Saturday on the tiny island nation of Dominica when the boat she and other students had hired backed over her.

Now when I read the headline I thought about the law here in the States where you cannot dive without a dive flag, so boats know not to travel over where divers are. This isn’t one of those cases, this is gross negligence.

Aren’t you glad she wasn’t shot?

h/t Bob

Some Interesting Stories on Arming Schools

Texas is acting on arming teachers:

Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst is calling for state-funded, specialized firearms training for teachers and administrators to guard against school shootings.

Dewhurst suggested Friday that school districts would nominate who they want to carry weapons on campus under his plan. The training would be more extensive than what’s required for a Texas concealed handgun license and include how to react technically and emotionally in an active shooter situation.

Dewhurst says the state funding needed would depend on the number of participating districts and how many people want training. School districts wouldn’t be required to participate.

The key to this is to keep this information a strong secret, as knowledge of participation will put both the armed teachers, and the non-participating school systems at risk.

Ohio is looking at arming non-teaching personnel.

A rural school district in Ohio is drawing attention with its plans to arm a handful of its non-teaching employees with handguns this year — perhaps even janitors.

Officials say four employees in the Montpelier schools have agreed to take a weapons training course and carry their own guns inside the district’s one building.

Another person that comes to mind is the New Town principal, who rushed to her student’s aid, only to be shot down as well.

Frankly I see all this extra nonsense as being a good step, but overall I think the best (and cheapest) solution is to simply eliminate the gun free school zone, and prohibit school boards and unions from acting against teachers and other staff, as well as parents, visitors, and other people allowed to enter schools who are otherwise legally and responsibly carrying firearms.

Really the ONLY potential danger I see is some of the less-than-desirable behaviors of a small group of gun owners. Things like teachers carrying their gun off-body in a purse, fanny pack, or bag, and taking that item off while teaching, or tucking the gun in a locked (where it may not be accessible in the time of need) or unlocked desk drawer.

I’m not a fan of any of these things for anybody, but for a citizen at home they might get away with it, with the number of kids in a school, some of them behavior problems, enough of these safety oversights over a long enough timeline will spell disaster, and give a solid opening to re-instate the ban.

Otherwise it eliminates the #1 reason why we have school shootings. They’re hunting preserves for psychopaths. If there is even a chance of an unknown armed civilian on site, this will likely deter any criminal action, as we don’t see these shootings at non posted locations.
