See a bunch of teenagers wandering around with a baseball bat, maybe you think they’re heading to the local field or park, or empty lot for a pickup game. Maybe Not.
Sheriff Charlie Crumpton says Tazah Hosey, 18, is now charged with murder. Deputies had already arrested two others — Bronson James, 34, and Koda Williamson, 26 — and charged them with murder…According to authorities, Jessie Beech, 21, of Raleigh was badly injured in the fight when he was beaten with a baseball bat. He was taken to a hospital in Jackson, where he died on Saturday.
A baseball bat is a thing I think we all had. I certainly walked over to the local field or park to slap the ball around with my friends. Those who use the metric “Gun Death” justify their made-up metric claiming that somehow guns are the key factor in violent deaths.
If this is true why do I own guns, but have never killed anybody? Why is it I, and most of the teens and young adults in the country own a baseball bat, but it was these three monsters that used it as a murder weapon, while the rest of us used it for a fun and non-violent game. Hell I’ve been hurt, and hurt others vastly more with nothing more than a Football than I ever have with a baseball bat, simply because of the rules of the game.
Maybe its the people, and not the tools.

I hate flying. I hate the TSA Bullshit, which doesn’t help the fact that I’m stuck in one seat with little room to wander for several hours. My least favorite part of a flight is when the door is opened and everybody piles into the aisles, and I’m generally trapped in my seat as others exit.
Flying with a firearm sucks worse. Of course I’d prefer just to leave my gun holstered and take my seat. Sheeple tend to get bent out of shape about this notion, they come up with all sorts of bullshit reasons, from Explosive Decompression (hint: Goldfinger was a MOVIE, not real life) to notions that planes are crowded places…of course I carry everywhere which includes buses, theaters, tourist attractions, major cities, et al. Lots of other people do too, guess what, no blood in the streets.
And then there’s a story like this.
The pilot J.K. Gilman was informed of the hijacking and was aware that Robert Denisco, a Brinks guard was sitting in First Class wearing plain clothes. Capt. Gilman quickly used the telephone to ask a First Class fight attendant to tell Denisco what was going on and to, “tell him I said to go back and shoot that Bastard!”
Spoiler alert: This story takes place in 1970, so the bastard got shot!
Yeah, if we lift the ban on weapons on planes it means the bad guys can bring weapons on planes. But when your plane is hijacked by terrorists with box cutters you can shoot the bastards!
And note that the TSA couldn’t find their own ass with two hands and a map, let alone terrorists smuggling dangerous stuff on planes.
Sorry flights are NOT safe from terrorists, can you please stop fucking with non-terrorists?

“If you’re going to exercise your rights call us first!” WOW, what else does this pertain to? Should I inform the cops I’m going out in my raincoat, but let them know I am just dressing for the weather, and I’m not a flasher?
Should I let them know I’m shopping in a local store and I intend to pay for all items I take, and I’m not shoplifting? This is totally outrageous!
“We’re fine with you exercising your rights in the parks, but out here on the street you’re only going to get hurt….if you get hurt don’t come crying to the person who hurt you?” I’d say this is the most glowing reason to carry a gun. The police are openly expressing their disinterest in protecting an innocent man’s life.
“With that extra magazine pouch you look like you’re going to war! What do you need this for?” Said by a cop with a duty belt loaded with gun, magazines, cuff, et al. Not a hint of irony there. Are you going to war officer? Well from the article:

Maybe he was being colloquial, or maybe indeed he thinks Peace Officers are in fact soldiers…
Also note the cops trying to claim that if you have a concealed weapons permit that mandates you to carry concealed…or maybe it just permits you to carry a weapon concealed. I wonder if the cops think that somebody is committing a “Big No-no” (their words) for somebody with a CCW who is currently UNARMED? I mean they have the permit, but they don’t have a concealed weapon, right?

In Mass you get an FA-10 registration form every time you buy or sell a gun in-state, might be a good idea for me to print up a copy of those for the guns I routinely carry for just such a horrible circumstance. Sadly these days Open Carry encounters with police are either Good (Where the cop is respectful of your rights and understands the law) Indifferent (where the cop simply chooses not to get involved in what is obviously a lawful action) or VERY VERY bad like this.
I have no idea why this man was open carrying. It was August in Michigan where it gets plenty warm for shorts and t-shirts, so it could have been convenience, or it could have been political. We talked about the political side of Open Carry on Friday’s Vicious Circle, Since he had an Open Carry law pamphlet on his person, I suspect he was very aware of the political implications. Bottom line is we NEED the activists, as they are the front-line workers that engage the police and educate the police and the populace about laws they may be unaware of. Without them these bad encounters will continue.

“Assume it’s an open carry situation”? Is this guy a moron? If a person is openly carrying a firearm its an open carry situation. If the person is walking down the road with their gun holstered and minding their own business and otherwise acting normal, I think it may be safe to assume the person is just exercising their rights. Certainly if there is doubt the police are welcome to speak to them…depending on the state the citizen may chose not to speak back. Rights, funny how they work.
Still what does the gun have to do with anything? Every law enforcement encounter should assume people are armed, and its pretty foolish to assume that malice can only be determined by the presence of a firearm or other weapon.

That was pretty much my day. I wanted to go to the range (but how is that different from any other day?) I had bacon, but when don’t you want bacon? But overall I just felt ill, so I stayed in my jammies for most of the day, and in the evening I mowed my lawn.
Still the trump goes to my Boss who got married yesterday. Her reasons were not political. Her husband is the son of Greek immigrants, and he is devout Greek Orthodox, and she converted by his request (she was raised Catholic and she overall didn’t see the two Churches as very different, and her family, like many New England Catholics were fair-weather practitioners.) so she needed a Sunday in early September, and the 11th was available. She knew the date had significance, but her thought was: “Why do I let those bastards scare me away from my wedding day?”
She’s off on her Honeymoon, so no word on how it went, but I’m sure it went well, but they have a day of joy the overshadows the day of sorrow and anger. I like that.
I didn’t realize, but Robb had a similar, and totally unplanned event:
For one, my oldest celebrated her 9th birthday, so it was a day of happiness for our family…Cake was eaten, presents were open, dinner was consumed, and all in all it was a good day.
This doesn’t mean I’ve forgotten what happened on September 11th, 2001. However, I don’t need a special day to remember, that event has stuck in my head every day for the past ten years.
There was talk after the attacks of making 9-11 a national holiday, but I’m glad we agreed to just carry on as a nation, and not let those evil acts change our national behavior. Heck on the day of the attacks I was working on a fishing boat we had converted to a research vessel for watching fish spawn. I was supposed to be sleeping, as we worked at night, but obviously it wasn’t a day of sleep. Still I picked up the boat phone and called my boss just because I didn’t know if we even SHOULD continue work. My boss was respectful, and understanding, but said that nothing had changed as far as we were concerned. Science must be done, and the show must go on…albeit with almost no sleep that night.
So yeah, carry on. And as Robb says, we don’t need a special day to remember those events, that’s for every day, just like every huge event, both good and bad.
Suicide is a horrible, and selfish act that hurts so many people. Still this one makes me chuckle just on the style points alone.

about 17,000 of the 30,000 annual “Gun Deaths” cited by the anti-rights forces are suicides. When questioned on the relevance of “Suicide Gun Deaths” (as if “Gun Death” was irrelevant enough!) the antis often make claims that by banning, restricting, or registering guns (like cars!) will somehow mean there will be less suicide.
This guy seemed to figure out how to punch his own clock without a gun. About 17,000 people per year also take their own lives every year without the aid of a gun. Of course those who feel “Gun Death” is a relevant metric ignore 50% of all suicides.
Suicide is horrible, and it has touched my life, as well as the lives of many others. If you have been touched by suicide, or know somebody who has and you need somebody to talk to or help, Samaritans is a great charity and help line. They also accept donations.

So yeah we still have many of our dear freedoms. On the other hand we have the disaster that is the Patriot act, the TSA, and Rogue police officers that are being supported by their corrupt brotherhood. Lawdog gives it a better look-over.

We are on one hand doing so well, and on the other hand we have so much work to do.
I think we’ve seen various posts about GI issue 1911s being able to be totally stripped without any tools. This is the first, and very good video showing it done.
This of course only works with guns configured with GI parts, as some updated parts (like hex grip screws, and squared hammer plungers) won’t work.
Doesn’t really matter to me as if I’m stuck in the field with no tools and a broken gun, chances are I won’t be able to fix that gun. The only circumstance I can think of where this would be useful is if I’m stuck in a trench somewhere and there are several broken and identical 1911 you could probably use this technique to tear down the broken guns and maybe take 5 broken guns and make 3 working ones, or something like that.
Still for even basic cleaning, what are you gonna do, Swish the gun parts in a stream before re-assembly? If you have your cleaning kit, shouldn’t you also have some punches and a screwdriver or multi-tool?

I don’t like to do a “Gun Death?” on days like today. Of course I could note that this day is one of the larger instances of “Gun Death?”, but I’ll leave it at that.
Today is a day to remember, and to still mourn the loss of those who were senselessly murdered by an insane ideology, and looking at the inroads of our own authoritarians, we lost much more than lives on that day.
Never forget, and never stop trying to heal those wounds.
So I’m currently reading Stressfire II By Mas Ayoob, and Mas talks a pretty good game about semi-auto combat shotguns. I’m not much of a shotgunner, and my go-to scatter-gun is a Mossberg 590 pump-action. I’m a fan of pump actions, but as I said, Mas really makes a good case for auto-loaders.
Now the wife has a Beretta Urika as a trap gun. I really like this gun, mechanically, and I love the ergonomics of it. Still this is a fowling piece, and a 28″ barrel is really going to hang you up in defensive shootings. Still the self-regulating gas-action on the gun makes a VERY sleek package, and the self-regulating action means that low-brass trap loads feed just as well as 3″ magnum loads do. And the gun does eat a bunch of recoil without being overly bulky and heavy.
Now wouldn’t it be awesome if Beretta made a riot gun out of that shotgun action? Well they do in the Tx4 Storm. Wanna see more?, Well I found this video.
The first thing that struck me was that messed-up loading system. The wife’s Urika runs like any other semi-auto out there, you can stoke up the mag, and run the charging handle to put the first round in the pipe. Her’s DOES have that funky button on the back of the elevator, but that simply engages the bolt catch manually so the next time the action is cycled the bolt locks back.
And what’s with the crazy unloading? For those who don’t know, the easiest and IMHO the safest way to unload a tube-fed shotgun is to open the action (on a semi-auto lock the bolt back, or simply hold it to the rear) then turn the gun on its side (be mindful of your muzzle) and dump the shell on the elevator either onto the ground or into your hand. Then close the action. At this point the chamber will be empty as you just pulled out the round in the chamber, as well as the round on the elevator that was “next up”. If you want you can do a quick press-check to verify the chamber is empty, but be careful as if you pull the bolt all the way back you will cycle the next round into the gun. With the chamber empty, and again the muzzle in a safe direction put your finger into the magazine and push the first round forward a fraction of an inch and feel around for the shell interrupter. It should feel like a spring-loaded nub. Push that out of the way and eject the round into your hand or on the ground. Repeat until the tube is empty, then cycle the gun and show clear.
Most shotguns allow you do do all of this with the safety engaged, which is also a good idea. Its a bit more complicated than unloading a detachable box-fed gun, but really not overly. And doesn’t require you to chamber and eject every round like some fixed-magazine guns. The risk is small, but every time you chamber and eject a round you run a small risk of a slam-fire, or a round going off in the ejection port. I’d just rather not do that.
Of course in the end Beretta notes that extended magazines are for military and law-enforcement only. According to Beretta this is because of Clinton’s Geroge HW Bush’s BS import laws, (Thanks Tam for the fact check!) and no word if you can get an after-market magazine, and frankly I don’t know the import laws well enough to know what’s legal and what isn’t.
Still all the workings of a really cool combat shotgun, messed up by people meddling with stuff that worked really well already.
