“Gun Death” Green Drink

So Bob sends me this email saying: “figured if you drank gin, you would drink anything — make sure to stay on the wife’s good side :)”

and a link to this story. Thanks for the dig Bob! Heh Gin is quite the polarizing beverage! OK but on to the more serious story.

A woman drew a 23-year prison sentence Wednesday for killing her alcoholic boyfriend by lacing a jug of margarita cocktails with antifreeze at her apartment.

“It’s not as if you were captive in this house,” Judge William Kocher said in imposing a near-maximum penalty on Cynthia Galens, who maintained that victim Thomas Stack was emotionally and physically abusive. “It’s just senseless what you did.”

Galens, 52, was convicted of manslaughter in September and faced anywhere from five years to 25 years in state prison.

In a domestic situation poisoning is a VERY easy way to commit murder, as your victim will be accustom to accepting food and drink presented to you. This goes double if the drink is laced with ethylene glycol which I gather is not unpleasant tasting like many poisons. Children and pets who don’t know better may consume large amounts of it just because it tastes “good”.

Mixed in a cocktail it might not even taste too strange. But again we’re talking about murder by poison, not by gun, that simply doesn’t count!

This Needs To Stop

Joe linked this video, go over there to see the picture he has up, its great. But this story really makes me sad.

We could discuss where the line goes with what is a violation and what is good safety if the TSA DID anything useful, but instead we’re paying this grave price for a gain of NOTHING, as their only “success” is catching terrorists AFTER their plans fail.

The next time I fly I’m opting out of the scan. I want to see it with my own eyes, and also if the TSA is going to violate me, I want them to get their damn hands dirty and have me glaring at them while they do it.

Disband the TSA today!

Death Ray

As a continuation to this post I read this story on Hot Air.

Don’t blame them. It was your elected representatives, in bipartisan fashion, who passed an anti-smoking statute last year requiring the FDA to impose more “graphic” health warnings on cigarette packaging. Evidently putting “you’ll get cancer” on the side of the carton is no longer deemed a sufficient deterrent to lighting one up, so now we’re actually going to thrust photos of putrefying flesh into smokers’ faces in hopes of steering them away.

First up, I don’t know a single smoker who thinks its a healthy habit. I don’t know anybody who STARTED smoking because they thought it was a healthy habit. Also I know VASTLY more people who have QUIT smoking than who have died of smoking related complications….and unless you work in the thoracic ward of a hospital so do you.

Also let’s go right to the heart, Nicotine is a drug, and its a really nice and attractive drug, also besides the clouds of billowing smoke, and the dry hacking cough of a long-time smoker its a very socially acceptable drug, as it doesn’t impair motor reflexes or inhibitions while it delivers relaxation and mild euphoria.

Now let’s look at OTHER drugs, and yes, THOSE drugs. Ever heard of uppity suburban kids traveling into gang-land ghetto to score drugs? Ever known a person or people who hung out with people they didn’t really like because that person had a line on illegal drugs? Ever know a woman who has had sex with a man, or a man who has plied a woman with drugs?

People are willing to do things they don’t like for drugs they enjoy. Do you think putting an ugly picture on the side of the pack is going to make a lick of difference? (PDF of Proposed Images Here) Also Robb pointed out high-res full-color images will add to the cost of a pack of smokes. Given that the Government takes a 50% cut off the top of a pack of smokes (Given that the .gov just collects their cut, and the Smoke company has to grow, make, and distribute the butts, big daddy gov is making MORE on smokes than the tobacco companies are), I doubt the added cost will do anything but hurt the pockets of poor people who smoke.

Also look at those images! Why not just be so full of shit and say smoking will kill you instantly, that way people will just see the blatant lies and maybe be lead to think that smoking is actually HEALTHY, because that’s such a good idea.

Foolish!

“Gun Death” Balcony Toss

Cueball Sends me this gross story.

A 2-year-old boy was thrown to his death from the balcony of a seventh-floor apartment in Queens on Tuesday night by a distraught woman who had been living with his family, the authorities said.

The woman, whom the authorities identified as Xiao Aiu Cai, 53, had a confrontation with someone else in the apartment and — for unknown reasons — lashed out at the boy, grabbed him, ran onto the balcony and threw him from it about 8:35 p.m., the authorities said.

Amazing how all it takes is a long fall to take a life. The way people who constantly use the metric “Gun Death”, you’d think it would require a gun to kill somebody.

Plug-and-Play Talent

So in this post we discussed a 100% synthetic Japanese Pop Star. Go read Silver’s comment in that post for a really in-depth post on who/what Hatsune Miku is, but from what I gather its a CG animation with a really impressive voice synthesizer, plus electronic and physical music as we know it.

No matter what, there IS no Hatsune Miku outside of her performances and CDs, she’s a creation, a digital performer who exists just to actualize the concepts of others.

This got me thinking about the film S1m0ne, a fantastic film where Al Pachino plays a director so fed up with neurotic stars that he creates a digital star, and is overwhelmed by her success.

Can you imagine a world of digital performers? On one part is seems a cold and inhuman world, but on another part it strikes me as heaven.

As a film buff I need to hold my nose when watching excellent performances by people like George Clooney, Sarah Polly, Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey Jr, amoung many others, because while I respect their ability as an actor, their politics suck. Can you imagine a world where George Clooney gives an expert performance, then is unplugged and boxed in a warehouse? You wouldn’t have to worry about Robert Downey’s next fall off the wagon, because he’d only do drugs on camera in character.

Of course we’d still have the little moral tug-of-war I have when it comes to films by Roman Polanski, as there will always need to be minds behind the performances, and even if the Directors are cut out, writers like Stephen King put out great product but horrible politics.

It just adds a different angle to how we think about the performing art. What do you think?

4 Rules

Caleb just posted this video

Guy slips with a loaded rifle on a range. 4 rules are followed, nothing happens but some chuckles from the peanut gallery.

I was talking with somebody the other night about a “Suicide”, for the sake of privacy I’ll just say the body was recovered at the base of the stairs. Circumstances surrounding the death from the evidence I heard (note very incomplete evidence) it sounds more like a slip-and-fall with a loaded gun, plus a rule #2 and #3 violation.

My condolences to the family. And keep being safe out there.

Thanks To All Who Served

Today is Veterans Day, Take some time out of your day to thank those you know who served their country in war. Also be prepared for them to brush off your thanks with what is always a humble display that amazes me.

We are lucky to have men and woman like them looking out for our safety!

My thanks will never be enough!

Gun Death: Total Brutality

I would love to hear from the gun control advocates of the world why this case should be discounted, as it is NOT a “Gun Death”.

The discovery of 18-year-old Kimberly Proctor’s charred body on the Galloping Goose Trail on March 19 shocked this community. The details of her murder are even more horrifying…The grim statement makes clear that the teenage boys planned Proctor’s death well in advance.

Through text messages and online chats, they created code words to initiate the attack, outlined how they would tie her up and assault her, discussed what types of fuel to use to burn her body, and drew up a map of possible places to dispose of her body.

The statement suggests that the two killers were not remorseful about what they did. After they raped and asphyxiated Proctor, and then mutilated and burned her body, the 16-year-old met up with his girlfriend and the 18-year-old went shopping and for brunch with his mother.

But the statement is short on details for a motive. Proctor had flirted with both boys in the fall of 2009 before declining their advances; they killed her four months later.

A disgusting and brutal case, and done at the hands of children. But not a “Gun Death”, so in the eyes of those who concern themselves with only the tool, this case isn’t relevant!

h/t Bob who was nice enough to give me a heads-up on the nature of the email…
