To My Homies In Maine

Specifically the ones that worked on the Bushmaster ACR project…you know who you are. Seems that Bushy is having a recall on said ACR Offical PDF here Text over at Caleb’s Place.

The comments are at Caleb’s are GREAT:
“Rarely have I seen a product go from being so highly anticipated, to being such an overpriced, under-engineered failure.” -Daverino

“The potentially “dangerous situation” is the ATF knocking down your door and shooting your dogs.” -Rob Robideau.

The ACR was never on my Radar as I’m more of a .308 Guy m’self (FYI I dunno if I said it enough, it was such a smart idea to sell the AK to buy the FAL, LOVE this gun!) but it does seem a bit pricey, tho not a bad rifle. Of course that would be given that the rifle you paid $3000 for didn’t malf and go full-auto and require you to ship it back to Maine for inspection and repair.

Just thought of you Bushmaster guys when I read this, so I thought I’d re-post.

  1. Kinda makes you realize why the military went with the SCAR doesn’t it?

    • Weerd Beard says:

Heh, well the Military is using the SCAR-H (SCAR-17) But from what I’ve been reading the SCAR-L(SCAR-16) isn’t being used to any large extent because it doesn’t show any large advantages over the M4 already in use.

I will say the SCAR-17 looks like VERY nice. 308 rifle. Honestly I don’t see much difference from handling them both between the SCAR-16 and the ACR.

I was interested in it as 6.8spc gun, not a 5.56. When it finally hit the civilian market they wanted too much for too little. I bought an AR. Figured I’d pick up a 6.8 upper when the cash came along.

That’s one of the reasons why I like 1911s, and why I now own an FAL. While all these new wiz-bang guns are really kickass, the old standards are tried and proven, also the accessory market has been built up around them. Also older guns like the 1911, FAL, and AR are out of patent so lots of different makers are copying them (and improving them) meaning better deals for your money.

So rather than paying $3000 for an FNH SCAR-17, I picked up a used Century L1A1 for $750 Even the super-high-end DS Arms paratrooper FAL pattern guns don’t go for much above $2000 with every option.

It’s not like the new designs do anything different than the old ones. You pull a trigger, it goes “bang,” it loads a new round, repeat. Arguably, all of these plastic guns are a step backward from WWII technology. But I might be saying that only because I am currently reading a Jeff Cooper book.

        • Weerd Beard says:

Bottom line, no the modern guns do nothing different than their older counterparts. Still with modern materials you get a lighter gun with improved ergonomics.

The SCAR-17 weighs 9lbs, has a nice left-hand charging handle (like an FAL) a mag release and bolt release like an AR pattern, and an ambi safety. Do you have a gun that can do a whole lot more than the M14 or FAL could do 60+ years ago? No, but it can do it lighter with better ergonomics, and while NOTHING comes apart simpler than an FAL, the SCAR pattern is about the same for simplicity, and you get that bitchen fully-adjustable folding stock.
