Actually it probably was a bit bigger than a .22lr
The way it works in England is you get a license and then you can get specific calibers attached to a slot on the license and then you may buy a gun to attach to that slot.
.22 and smaller rimfire can be semi auto.
Everything else is restricted to bolt, or lever action, no pump guns in centerfire.
Shotguns can be pump, but no more than 2 round magazine.
I’m sure I’m forgetting something in this, but ya it’s perfectly possible he was doing this with .308 or .270.

UK paper reports he used both a 12 ga and a 22. The shotgun he had the licence for years and the licence for the rifle was issued 2007. The 22 may have been semi-auto as on of their politicians was screeching that more restrictions need to be put in place on these “weapons of war” that “pump out bullets by the hundreds” or some such.
ALso of interest was the concern expressed in the article of Mumbai style attack on these sleepy little villages. One of the dolts in their parliment let slip that their major cities have special units to respond to such an attack within minutes but that rural areas have absolutely zero capability. Apparently the ye olde unarmed bobbies are very prevalent outside of urban areas. So if I was a terrorist Mumbai team I would proceed to depopulate a large swath of sleep villages and feel pretty confident on the damage I could do for a few hours before resistance was met.

You know the Squad Auto version of the SA-80 is a really good tack driver. Speaking of sniper rifles, I wish I could import one. They’re crap in actual military field service due to stoppages due to unfortunate design work but it’s a toss up if the SIG 500 series Light Squat Auto in 5.56 or the SA-80 bullpup is more of a tackdriver. Not a well tuned proper sniper rifle, but really remarkably accurate, problems have always been reliability, not getting rounds where you point them.
They should send me one and I’ll fettle it as a good prarie dog and coyote rifle and then send them a few back for each police department with some training tips so that they don’t have to chase a homicidal maniac with two firearms shouting “Please, SIR!!! Please, would you stop this murdering??? That isn’t very cricket of you to be acting this way…”
