As Sure As The Sun Rises In The East…

…Reasoned Discourse will break out when a blogger starts parroting Anti-Gun Talking Points!

Tam links to a goober who “Supports the Second Amendment”, but thinks lawful gun owners should pay for the mayhem caused by criminals breaking the law.

Of course he’s been scrubbing comments as fast as they are coming in. No idea how big that number is, but Tam drives some serious traffic. Interestingly there was this comment at Tam’s

og said…

he said that, indeed. A commenter opined:

“Are you responsible, should a thief steal your car and run over a pedestrian?”

His response, copy pasted:

“Guns are inherently dangerous, Dan. Cars are not.”

Tam said…

og,

“he said that, indeed.”

What was he doing all those years in school?

I wonder how much insurance that thimble-headed gherkin carries on his steak knives. You know, in case those inherently dangerous objects get stolen and he’s responsible for someone getting shivved in the liver.

What a lackwit.

Its a VERY interesting point. Sure criminals shoot themselves with guns at a pretty good rate…still a very non-trivial amount of people are outright murdered with knives…a tool we ALL have around our kitchens and dining rooms, not to mention utility knives we all keep around.

Using his logic, shouldn’t we all have to pay for that as well?

Of course not, guns are different because he doesn’t OWN any guns! Guns are items owned by the mythical “Other”…you know, those inhuman brutes!

Its amazing that people will be 100% willing to spout Michael Bloomberg’s religious doctrine, yet have zero willingness to discuss it with anybody who might not agree with them.

“Gun Death” Umbrazella!

We’ve seen them before! Umbrazellas are dangerous shit!!! We need to BAN THEM ALL!!!

A New York cab driver reportedly died when a passenger stabbed him in the eye with an umbrella during a robbery, sources said.

The New York Post reports that the cab driver continued to drive for about a block after being gored, ultimately crashing into two parked vehicles on Thomas S. Boyland Street in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn at about 5 p.m. Thursday.

Why would ANYBODY need an Umbrazella? People say “Too keep rain off”, but they’re obviously paranoid, as humans are waterproof, and nobody has EVER died from being rained on!

BAN THEM ALL TODAY!!!1111!!!

Open Carry PSH

This is quite the story of an open-carry arrest.

A man accused of causing a panic at a family fun center by carrying a semi-automatic rifle while walking nearby says he’s on a Second Amendment mission to educate the public about gun rights.

Mack Worley was arrested Saturday night in Southeast Vancouver. Police said he crossed the line when he decided to openly carry his gun on private property.

“I was breaking no law and I was arrested for trespassing on a public sidewalk,” said Worley. “Whether or not you agree with open carry of a firearm or not, it’s not illegal.”

Tuesday morning, Worley pleaded not guilty to a charge of trespassing with a weapon capable of producing bodily harm. Police said he first went to a Burgerville restaurant with a rifle slung over his shoulder. An employee called 911.

Vancouver police spokeswoman Kim Kapp said a security guard told Worley to leave and called police when he didn’t.

By the time police arrived, Kapp said Worley had walked to a fireworks stand in the Big Al’s parking lot. Employees closed the stand because they were worried about what Worley was up to. An employee at Big Al’s called 911 while the business went into lockdown.

Coffee barista Dominick Harris watched as panicked parents grabbed their children and ran into the restaurant while police officers swarmed around Worley.

“I saw this guy underneath this tree over there with hands up,” Harris said.

Officers took Worley’s rifle but returned it after they determined it was not stolen. Police said Worley was on private property, and when they stopped him they told him Big Al’s has a no-weapons policy unless the gun owner has a concealed weapons permit.

Worley refused to leave, according to police.

Agree or not with the message this guy was making, it appears no laws were broken, and no malevolent behavior was observed, but he was arrested anyway.

Good for them!

Morning Junk Science

Nothing like some garbage science to start your day!

Here’s something that might be hard for moms to swallow: a recent study suggested that women who are thin give birth to children with higher I.Q.’s. Hm.

The report, which comes from the United Kingdom, says that children born to overweight mothers may score slightly lower on I.Q. tests than children with thinner mothers.

Another class that is the wrong side of the political spectrum. The Overweight. Let’s see that amazing result!

The results are startling: If mom was overweight prior to becoming pregnant, her child scored 1.5 points lower on the three tests. And if mom was obese prior to her pregnancy, scores were 3 points lower.

1.5 Points and 3 points! WOW! What does that even amount to? Even if these numbers were real, the differences are hardly “startling”, a better word is “imperceptible”. The difference between somebody with an IQ of 125 and 120 is barely measurable, and further can be completely obscured if the higher IQ person is complacent and unmotivated, and the lower one is well-read and has a curious nature.

Further the difference between the test groups is well within the margin of error for most excepted tests. Since I’m one of those curious types I used to take IQ tests from various sources to see how they compared. I was impressed to find that indeed the number it gave me was pretty close, and that was over several years of testing, and several different tests. Of course the Margin of error given for those tests was approximately +/- 5 points. This was around 20 years ago…and not surprisingly the tests haven’t changed that much.

The reasonable error around any reliable IQ is going to be plus or minus 5 or 6 points, to give you a 95 percent confidence interval. So, for example, if a person scores 126, then you can say with 95 percent confidence that the person’s true IQ is somewhere between 120 and 132; within our science we don’t get any more accurate than that.

But as soon as you go to a different IQ test, then the range is even wider, because different IQ tests measure slightly different things.

So they’re claiming a DIFFERENCE of 1.5 and 3 points that can only be measured with tests that have a margin of error of 5/6 points.

Now to be fair, I haven’t seen the data set, but if most of the participants measured lower, that COULD indicate a real trend…but the trend really can’t be relied on, as it could simply be an artifact of the test. Still, more likely the data set was a standard scatter-plot and they managed to fit a line in there to sell a point.

A similar graph can be seen here by Barron.

Overall we can claim that a good Brady Score means a more dangerous state…but really the numbers are irrelevant, and instead the most confident claim that can be made is “Gun Control Doesn’t Make You any Safer”.

The same claim I bet is “Your BMI has no impact on your child’s intelligence”.

of course these people have an agenda, which is more important than good ethical science!

Really Interesting Ammo Video

Unfortunately the outcomes were bad but there were some REALLY interesting take-away points.

First up, I saw a red flag with using the Hornady LEVERevolution in a snub-nosed revolver. You see this ammo was actually designed to put spitzer-type bullets into tube-fed lever guns. You see since the rounds are end-to-end in a lever gun tube, a pointed spitzer bullet runs the risk of dimpling the primer of the round in front of it during recoil. This is why bread-and-butter lever-gun rounds like .30-30 WCF, .45-70 Government, .444 Marlin among others have fat, flat-point or round nose bullets seated, when similar rounds for bolt-action or semi-auto rifles, or lever guns that feed from a box magazine will generally have pointed bullets.

Generally when loading a handgun round for a rifle or carbine slower-burning powders can be used to get better velocity over the longer bore length. When you take a round like this and stick it in a short handgun, much of the powder might still be burning when the bullet leaves the bore, meaning all that powder energy is just making a muzzle flash rather than pushing a bullet.

But in this case those rounds are still going pretty fast.

Still despite this the round performance in the gel is VERY poor. That first round looks like it could almost be reloaded. The others are expanding less than the bargain-type JHP ammo you find.

Sad that the performance was that poor, especially in gel where the homogenous nature of the medium makes for textbook expansion that you might not see in living tissue.

“Gun Death” Heels

Not the first time I’ve seen high heels used as a stabbing weapon:

A woman allegedly stabbed a 59-year-old man to death with a stiletto heel early Sunday morning at a Museum District condominium high-rise.

At about 4 a.m. Houston police responded to an assault in progress call at Parklane on 1701 Hermann Drive, said HPD spokesman Kese Smith.

Ana Trujillo, a 44-year-old woman, opened the door for police, who found the man’s body lying on the floor, Smith said.

Trujillo, whom police described as the man’s guest, now faces murder charges. The victim’s identity was not released.

High Heels are bad for your arches, frankly don’t make women look better in my expert opinion, and they KILL!!!! BAN THEM!

Quote of the Day: TJIC

From Tam’s comments:

I repeatedly refused the cops’ requests for a voluntary walk-through of the house.

I repeatedly refused to answer any questions.

The cops repeatedly told me that if I had nothing to hide, I should just allow a walk-through, and if I was a good guy, I’d have a “conversation” with them.

In the end they illegally seized my FID (just plan CAN NOT do it, but they took it and wouldn’t give it back) and they illegally seized Jennifer’s firearms. My lawyer was appalled but not surprised.

Jennifer and I have been talking about moving out of MA in 3-6 years.

We are officially looking for real estate tomorrow; I will not spend one more day than is necessary in this totalitarian hell hole……

At the end, some of the cops who ransacked the house tried to shake hands with me. “No hard feelings”.

I refused and said “Gentlemen, please think about what you’re doing. On the fourth of july, the day we celebrate freedom, you stole legally owned firearms from a women who is engaged to a guy who made a joke you don’t like. You are not the good guys. You are ‘just doing your jobs’. Look in the mirror. You’re the bad guys.”

Response: “I’m sorry you feel that way. Have a good Fourth.”

My lawyer says that there’s a decent chance I may yet be arrested…..

Wait, one final bit: we got to watch the cops carry the illegally seized firearms out through the front door, WHICH HAD A COPY OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE TAPED TO IT, then past an American flag and a Gadsden flag.

The sources seem pretty darn legit. I honestly have NEVER wanted something to be a publicity stunt more in my life.

I’ll keep you posted on what I hear about this case.

“Gun Death” Forklift

In my days of working on Fishing Boats I spent a LOT of time in fish packing houses which are LOADED with forklifts and powered pallet jacks. Things can get pretty scary at times!

Two men were killed Wednesday night, crushed by an unmanned forklift while working inside a truck at a Dallas plastics company….Evans said he had no information on what may have caused the forklift to roll into the men, but that investigators with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration would be looking into the incident.

Yikes, the MANNED ones are scary enough, when they’re Unmanned, that’s super scary! Hey, but maybe I’m just phobic, as only guns are scary, right?

Anti-Freedom

According to Tam they’re raiding TJIC’s House.

I have no idea about the particulars in this case, the back-story is here.

Speaking in general about Massachusetts firearms law: You need a permit to OWN guns in Massachusetts. These permits allow you to posses guns and ammo, and allow you to buy them.

Some info here on permits, but thumbnail they go like this.

All permits are issued for 5 years, and all but the Class D FID cost $100

FID (Firearms Identification Card): They come in Class D and Class C. D is for PEPPER SPRAY and other defensive sprays ONLY, and is $25. yes it is a crime to carry defensive sprays in Massachusetts without a firearms permit. C allows you to buy and posses Long guns that are considered under Massachusetts law as “Low Capacity”. The General understanding is a “High Capacity gun” is a gun who’s standard magazine accepts more than 10 rounds for rifles, or 5 rounds for shotguns.

LTC (License to Carry Firearms) they come in Class B and A. Don’t be fooled by the name, this is NOT automatically a carry permit! Class B) allows the bearer to buy “Large Capacity” long guns, and handguns, but not “High Capacity handguns”. Open carry is technically legal in Massachusetts with this permit, but more on that, Class B permit holders may NOT carry concealed.

Class A, allows you to buy any guns or ammo that are legal in the state. This permit can be restricted by your law enforcement issuer. Common restrictions are “Employment Only”, or “Target and Hunting Only”. These permits you can only carry a firearm on your property, or in the case of “Employment Only” while you are at work. If there are no restrictions THIS is the Massachusetts Carry Permit.

OK onto issue, FID cards are “Shall Issue”, if you can pass a background check, and your payment clears you WILL be issued this permit. LTC cards are different, they are “MAY Issue”, and any applicant can be denied issuance for any reason. Any permit holder may have their permit revoked for any reason. The only formality is that the Chief Law Enforcement Officer must inform you in writing WHY they are refusing you.

Remember that bit about open carry in Massachusetts? There have been several cases of ACCIDENTAL exposure by Mass LTC A holders (I can think of no direct Open carry stories), and in all cases the gun owner was detained, and made to show his card. At a later date the card was revoked, or re-issue wad denied. The reason given was “Bad Judgement”, the token catch-all for over-zealous police who hate guns in Massachusetts.

Now for TJIC, he HAD an LTC A, and it was revoked for some off-color political statements he made. He has been re-issued an FID. Since Massachusetts has universal registration, he likely has “Large Capacity” firearms, and/or handguns registered to his name. I suspect a warrant was issued to seize those guns, as it is a crime to posses them without the proper licenses.

This is how bad it is as a gun owner in Massachusetts. When I renewed my permit this year I was getting very close to possessing my guns illegally simply because the card renewal system is so bogged down with new applicants. I also renewed my Maine permit. In Maine I can open carry, or simply posses and shoot my guns in a legal fashion without a permit. The fact that my Maine permit took forever to renew is an inconvenience, the fact that my property becomes a CRIME because the system is Broken in Massachusetts is a tragedy!

We’ll see where this goes.
