Some LOLz from the Onion

I was watching some old videos from the Onion, and they’ve really cut production cost as well as writing.

Too bad, but sometimes stuff is still funny

Enjoy

Interesting Biology: Higher Nerve Function?

Ok if you’re still a reader of this blog (I’m trying to post more non podcast content), you’ve probably seen this video before.

I’m a marine biologist with some training in animal medical research, so the whole neurology of this is probably about as clear to me as it is to you.

Still I was always amused how rodents and such will thrash around when shot in the head. Also FYI there is a euthanasia technique for mice where you dislocate the neck vertebrae. I consider it the best and fastest way to end a mouse’s life, but DAMN do they thrash about when you do it right, and I KNEW the mouse couldn’t be suffering (If you do it right it’s essentially an immediate decapitation with just the skin and neck muscles holding the head on the body) but why all the trashing?

Well the above video explains why that is.

Now comes how my brain works….does this happen in humans?

I’m not going to link any, but uncensored video hosts like liveleak have DOZENS of videos of people getting shot in the heads.

Almost all are security camera footage, most are robberies and what I suspect are gangland executions.
There are some battlefield footage.

No matter the circumstances, these are videos of instant death by severe brain trauma.

Every last one the person drops like a rag doll. Zero twitching or thrashing.

Again, neurology isn’t my field, so I can’t tell you why that is….but I just watched this video:

They’re shooting vervet monkeys and Baboons, and weather they’re hitting them with a centerfire rifle or an air gun, a head shot and the monkey does its best impersonation of a rag doll, with maybe a few involuntary tensing of muscles (which could be caused by hydro-static shock).

Could this be a function of higher brain function?

Can’t be size as these guys whack some ground squirrels that are close in size to the vervets, and the squirrels go acrobatic when their brains get scrambled.

Just interesting stuff.

A Little Anti-Gun Inside Baseball

So Sebastian was the first on our side to report this:

Does this winning smart holster really put a bar through the trigger guard? Seriously? That’s not how retention should work. Leave this stuff to gun people!

And here’s the image, just in case you doubt it’s that dangerous.

Sebastian points out that the people designing this crap are electrical engineers/Computer nerds, not gun people with engineering backgrounds, so they might overlook a fundamental bit on gun safety….like rule #3.

But I think more embarrassing is that a very similar “Safety” Mechanism caused a negligent discharge in an airplane cockpit.

Here’s a video on how that went down:

Of course the people running the competition aren’t just anti-gun nuts who know nothing about guns.

Mike “The Gun Guy” Weisser was one of the judges!

In the interests of full disclosure, as they say, Mike the Gun Guy was a member of the panel that chose the recipient student team which received the award. But it was a tough choice because all the submissions were serious, contained multiple technologies, and most of all indicated a great deal of thought and hard work.

Of course we know Mike is insanely anti-gun, and likely insane, and has some serious issues with his gun-knowledge, and some SERIOUS issues on gun safety.

My favorite carry gun. Glock 19. But only if I’m wearing a coat with a nice pocket or cargo pants with a large pocket because I never wear a holster. It’s such a great gun. Fits perfectly in my hand and lets off with much less snap than the sub-compact 26 which I have to carry when I’m wearing pants with smaller pockets.

Yep, this guy owns a gun shop, is an NRA instructor, and the king of the anti-gun “You aren’t qualified enough to own or carry a gun!” mode of attack.

Last I’d like to talk about this holster. Not only is the retention bar completely dangerous, but the holster technology is garbage too!

The winning design includes three security options.

First, the gun owner’s fingerprints must match before the weapon can be removed from the holster.

If that doesn’t happen a key card like sensor worn on the owner’s lapel can release the weapon.

Finally, a voice recognition device can also be used to match the authorized owner and free the gun.

So I can start with agreeing with Sebastian, making it a holster is a GREAT idea, as that doesn’t require you to put stuff in a gun that likely wasn’t designed to have room for this stuff. Battery life will always be an issue, as will simply not using it. Much like your carry permit will do you no good if you aren’t carrying, whatever your tamper-resistant solution is it isn’t worth crap if you just toss your gun in a desk drawer.

So let’s talk about these technologies.

Fingerprint reader: Great system IF, your hands are dry, clean. and you aren’t wearing gloves.

Really this is the least flawed technology here, but that’s a low bar to clear here. I’m sure this technology can improve….still if your hands are muddy, dirty, bloody, sandy, or wet this shit will likely not work no matter how good the technology gets. Further Gloves will 100% prevent this technology.

Now onto the voice recognition software. Let’s go back to the news:

Testifying for the defense during a pre-trial hearing Thursday, an FBI voice-recognition scientist said that he didn’t believe it was possible to identify who was screaming in the background of a 911 call placed the night George Zimmerman shot and killed Florida teen Trayvon Martin….

…He said because the screaming voice was affected by distress or emotion, there was no way to compare it to “reasonable, natural speech and come up with correct answers.”

So in other words, you can program this holster to recognize your voice, and even if it is 100% accurate (it won’t be), that’s great if you’re going to the range, or running your police qualification.

But if your life is on the line, and adrenaline is in your system, your voice very likely won’t sound the same, and the computer probably won’t recognize your voice.

So when you’re under attack, and need your gun RIGHT NOW to defend your life. your gun will not leave the holster.

Also I suspect there might be some issues if you’re woken up at 3am to the sound of broken glass, and you have adrenaline, plus sleep on the old vocal cords.

But at least the retention bar might shoot you in the leg while you struggle with it.

But this gun has a final fallback: The RFID.

This is JUST a key that fits a lock. Hey but since it takes battery power it’s “SMART”.

This is the crux of my hatred of this “Smart Gun” hype. We already have guns that have integrated key locks. I don’t like them, and I have intentionally spent more money for guns that don’t have an internal lock.

But this technology is essentially identical, and has the same problems. Then key can be lost or stolen, you can do the simple and sloppy thing of leaving the key next to the locked gun which is almost as bad as doing nothing at all, and it likely complicates the draw stroke, or depending on where the person keeps the key, make it impossible to draw the gun if you only have one free hand.

I’ll close to say I’m not opposed to smart guns, but all “Smart Gun” action right now is being conducted by the anti-gunners, and everything being presented is total garbage that will get good people killed.

No thanks!

Not Anti-Gun Anti Self-Defense!

So get a load of this crap!

The parents of a California man who allegedly tried to rob a Starbucks in Fresno, but was thwarted by a Good Samaritan, claim their son was the victim of “excessive force.” They believe the man who police describe as a hero should face criminal charges and warn their son may file a lawsuit.

You’ll be pleased to know they have video!!

Pretty obvious that the gun is fake, the robber isn’t even treating it like a loaded gun. I will note that the law does NOT expect you to know weather a realistic gun is real or not, and it is certainly reasonable for all the people there to assume it WAS real.

That being said the knife is VERY real, as after he got brained with a chair the defender took it away from him and stabbed him a few times.

Now this is a GREAT reason why EVERYBODY should be part of the Armed Citizen Legal Defense Network. One thing I love about being a member is it NOT contingent on firearms use. If you defend your life, be it with a pistol, a rifle, a chair, a knife or your bare hands, ACLDN will be there for you as a member.

Hopefully this case is just nutty enough that the Attorney General of California leaves it alone….that being said it’s California AND the only thing that needs to be done in that state for the family to file a civil suit is to hire a lawyer, and after this article their phone might be ringing.

One last thing that came to my mind watching the video. Since this is California, of COURSE the criminal was the only person armed…the fake gun and the knife he was using are probably both illegal under Cali law. But if the good Samaritan DID have a gun, I really do think things would have ended better.

So I will say that the defender could have shot Optimus Prime in the back, given that he was directly and imminently threatening the life of the cashier. That being said, I don’t think that would have been how this played out. I really think all it would take for this to have ended would be for the customer to draw his gun and order the robber to drop his weapons.

Remember most defensive gun uses end without a shot being fired. So what ended in a struggle and a stabbing could have ended peacefully. That’s something the antis never tell you!

He’s At It Again

Michael Bloomberg is dumping huge amounts of money in a vain attempt to turn free America into New York City.

One of the nation’s leading gun-control advocacy groups announced plans on Friday to spend upwards of $1 million in the upcoming Virginia gubernatorial and attorney general races even though a similar spending effort failed to flip control of the state senate in 2015.

Of Course Daddy Bloomberg is worth 53 BILLION Bucks so him dropping a million back into an election cycle he likely won’t win is like me spending $2 on 40oz of malt liquor.

The Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund, a New York-based gun-control group founded in large part by Michael Bloomberg, is donating $450,000 to Democrat Ralph Northam in his race against Republican Ed Gillespie. They’re spending another $250,000 on mailers supporting Northam. The gun-control group is putting another $300,000 into Democrat Attorney General Mark Herring’s reelection bid.

According to sources (and the fact that Bloomberg is backing him) Northam is a type-A Anti-gun Nut. Of course we all still remember Herring’s petulant little jab at concealed carry holders in the entire nation. He couldn’t get the horrible New York style laws he wanted in Virginia, so he had to do what he could.

Any surprise why he’s sitting on $300,000 still wet from Bloomberg’s hands?

The bottom line is Michael Bloomberg is going to die a billionaire, no matter how poorly he spends his money, he has so much of it, that spending MILLIONS in an election cycle won’t even make a dent. Still he’s a megalomaniac, he tried to shape all of America in his vision of New York city, and failing that he’s been attempting to influence the states one at a time to achieve the same goal.

We can’t bankrupt him, but we can make him lose interest. The last two election cycles he’s put out an exploratory committee to see if the American people like him. They don’t, so much that he’s removed his name from all the political groups he runs. Mayors Against Illegal guns became “Everytown for Gun Safety” and “Moms Demand Action”, with only a vague association with Bloomberg for the former, and Shannon Watts up front on the latter….but it’s all Daddy Bloomberg.

He knows he’s hated by Americans, so he’s withdrawn to where people aren’t pushed to give an opinion of him. We also hate gun control, and if we keep beating him his ego might get bruised enough that he’ll move onto somebody else…..or if we’re lucky just enjoy his retirement in one of his many luxury homes.

Blue Napalm Clean!

So as a stay-at-home Dad, I do a lot of cleaning.

My wife found this concoction online, then lost it, then found it again ect. So I’ll put it up here where I can find it again, and maybe you all will enjoy it.

I don’t know the official name for this stuff, but I call it “Blue Napalm”. It is ideal for cleaning tubs and sinks, and might work on toilets.

1/2 Cup Original Dawn dish soap (the blue stuff)
1/2 Cup white vinegar
1/4 cup baking soda

Mix the soap and vinegar into a large container, then slowly add the baking soda so as not to create a foaming mess.
Next wet down the item you want to clean, and smear the foamy gel all over it.
Let it sit for at least 10 mins so it can penetrate into the grime.
Scrub with a mildly abrasive sponge (I like the green plastic ones) until things look pretty clean.
rinse THOROUGHLY! This is the hardest part as this stuff just wants to hang on and foam up. I like to rinse it until all the blue is gone, and the tub is filled with suds, then walk away for a while and let the bubbles pop, then rinse again. It should be gone after 3 tries.

Enjoy your good-as-new tub!

Child labor highly recommended.
