So CSGV sent out this tweet:

MN concealed handgun permit holder decides penalty for petty theft is death, executes thief in drive-by

then links this story and video. Go watch the video, its an interview of the now deceased robber. The video is some sort of anti-violence, Gang, and Drug task force interview about this guy’s past. In the video he admits to being a gang member, committing violent crime, running with people who engage in violent crime, and doing two years in prison for violent crimes.

the linked article also gives information about the departed’s family and friend’s violent history.

Then there’s this:

Gary Shade, a firearms instructor based in Apple Valley, said he agreed with the Hennepin County attorney’s decision to not press charges against the shooter, though he generally discourages his students from chasing suspected criminals.

No charges pressed. So let’s have a look at CSGV. We have two men, one man is a violent criminal who has a long violent past, and at the time of his death had just stolen an old woman’s purse and beaten her with a pistol. The other man committed no crimes, and obviously passed the various Minnesota background checks required to get a gun and a carry permit.

Who does CSGV (and any anti-rights lobby group for that matter) side with? The CRIMINAL.

Anti-Rights, Pro-Ignorance, Pro-Criminal.

More Made-Up Problems

So the antis are kicking around this article. I’ll let you read the whole thing. First up this was written by a typical anti-gun person, meaning somebody who knows NOTHING about guns or gun laws*, so I take this with a grain of salt.

Still from the story two people are hiking through some White Mountain trails in New Hampshire (BTW I’ve hiked these very trails many times) and they encounter two guys one carrying “a large semi-automatic M16 type assault weapon”, and according to them at low ready rather than slung. Allegedly they asked if the gun was an airsoft replica and the answer was:

He said no and that the gun was “very real and very loaded.” He proudly opened the “magazine” and showed us it was full of cartridges about the size of my fingers.

Who knows, if it was a semi-auto “M16 type gun” we’re talking an AR-15…and .223 is pretty small for rifle rounds. Or it was something that shoots “finger-sized” cartridges (which even the .308 rounds that an AR-10 or an FAL eats are smaller than my wife’s tiny fingers), either way their nomenclature and use of quotes around “Magazine” lead me to believe they know nothing about guns.

So let’s first have a peek at the facts as they’re presented. The guy is carrying a rifle in the New Hampshire national Forrest. So far no foul, open carry is legal there, and the law doesn’t make distinctions between handguns and long guns. The gun was allegedly carried “at the ready”. Now if true this is bad form. When carrying a handgun one must have a holster for it. Having a gun in hand can be considered a threat. I certainly would think that. Of course rifles don’t have holsters (some companies make “Scabbards” that carry the gun in a pouch on your back like a samurai sword) but the next best thing is a sling. Now with AR-15s the latest thing are the single-point tactical slings that carry the gun across your chest, and it can be steadied with a hand and appear to be in low ready. We’ll just leave that out there, if you’re going to carry a long gun, sling the weapon, or use one of thems scabbards.

Now let’s go over something these people didn’t discuss. Its the white mountains of New Hampshire. On the Lincoln Woods trail which is near by my family encountered a pair of Moose walking up the trail. Thankfully it wasn’t a cow with a calf, or a Bull in his rut so they posed no danger (still the fuckers are HUGE so even a docile one can be intimidating) but that’s not to say they can’t.

Furthermore those woods are home to Coyotes, Black Bear, Mountain Lion, and there have been attempts to re-introduce wolves. These things are a reason why I’m saving my pennies for “Project Bear Gun”, and certainly a rifle isn’t a bad idea either.

But let’s get to the bottom line. They hiked their hike. They took their pictures, they enjoyed their day. Nobody was hurt, and no laws were broken. But they really didn’t like seeing that icky gun (tho they were intimidated enough to speak with the guy carrying it).

These are the made-up problems of the antis. There isn’t any harm done, or and honest concern, hell there isn’t even any FEAR! (BTW I was in Boston once where a homeless person was having a psychotic episode and being very angry at shit that wasn’t there….I didn’t ask him about his life story, or his problems…I got away to a place he wasn’t. That’s what REAL concern looks like. The could have left the park, and they could have taken a different trail, nope they stayed on the trail with the guy with a gun…that says a LOT)

Nope, they just don’t like our life choices and wish we’d change them for their own personal consideration.

Nah, no thanks!

*BTW have you noticed that the people who don’t like Cafe Standards or speed limits or car import laws know a thing or two about cars? The people who are black civil rights activists know a lot about Jim Crow laws and the various laws and events in the Black civil rights movement. Drug lobbyists know about medicine, medical conditions, hospitals, and FDA testing requirements….but if you’re a gun control activist you don’t know an AR-15 from a 10/22, or a Colt 1911 from a Colt Python.

Gunnie Note

Today is flu Shot day, so I’ll be needing to take off my coat for the nurse to cause me pain.

So the Kahr PM45 went into the pocket. I haven’t carried it in over a week, and I was shooting it this weekend so it was unloaded when I pulled it from the safe this morning.

I’ll note that both in Kahr’s owner’s manual, and across the internet you hear “Only load a kahr from slide-lock”. Seems kinda odd given that the gun seems to load itself in course of fire just fine. Whenever I load this gun cold (on the range I will do slidelock reloads) I do it like I do any other semi-auto. Insert loaded mag and rack the slide. Drop the mag, insert a fully loaded mag, press check, holster.

Never had a problem. My only thought is maybe some people are half-assing the slide stroke and either short-stroking the gun, or riding the slide home.

Nope, overhand grip, rack to full extension, and then full release and let the slide ride home under full spring tension.

Round in the pipe every time!

Oh, BTW I’m carrying the gun dirty too. I don’t think I put 25 rounds through it this weekend (we were honestly talking more than shooting) and the gun is all stainless and plastic. Seriously what’s going to happen?

Up One Down One

Good points for advising people to protect themselves. Remember this guy is a cop so he knows better than anybody the reality, cops aren’t super-heroes and they aren’t there when you need them.

Also “Easy Don’t Attack A Woman” is one of the less discussed benefits of an armed lawful society. The Heinlein “An Armed Society is a Polite Society”. Victim Disarmament zones like New York and DC ask those who live there or visit not resist criminals. Some are so bold as you ask you to carry a “Dummy wallet” with some money in it to hand over so you don’t need to cancel credit cards and get new ID. This not only welcomes the bloodthirsty predators to ply their trade, but also invites the less bloodthirsty. Somebody can hold up people with an unloaded gun, or a toy gun and never need to back up their threats.

Meanwhile a mugger gets shot by a chosen victim, even if they just have a toy in their hand, it sends a VERY clear message: Violent Crime can cost you your life.

Just look at the crime statistics from any major city that is shall-issue carry and may issue, or no issue carry. The violent crime rates are astronomically higher in those cities where the lawful are disarmed.

Now I didn’t say CRIME was lower, that varies from city to city, but VIOLENT crime is lower. I did a comparison between Boston and Seattle (I don’t have that comparison off-hand, but you can see a thumbnail here) They’re both cities of about the same size, and they are similar climates (less good days in the summer in Seattle, less horrible snowy winter days) and Seattle has MORE CRIME than Boston…but most of that crime is non-violent.

You’re more likely to have your car stolen in Seattle…but you’re more likely to have your car JACKED while in Boston.

You’re more likely to have your house robbed in Seattle…but you’re more likely to suffer a home invasion in Boston.

You’re more likely to have your property vandalized in Seattle, but you’re more likely to be raped or assaulted in Boston.

Which would you chose?

Still he loses points on recommending the Taurus Judge, that’s WORSE than a .38 Snub, they’re bigger, have worse ballistics, worse triggers. When I heard him recommending a “.45” That sounded like a good start. 9x19mm is just as good and cheaper to shoot, and often comes in easier guns to carry and shoot, but .45 is a surprisingly easy caliber to shoot well when you think about how massive that bullet is coming down the pipe.

If it just gets women into gun shops, and out on the range that’s enough to call this a strong victory.

Still the tide has already turned, more women are getting their carry permits than ever before and I constantly see more women at the range.

As always carry your damn gun, and don’t be afraid to use it. It could save far more lives than you could imagine.

More 4th Amendment Damage

Cemetery got jerked around by the cops.

Bring on the dog then I said, was told ok, but if the dog gets to happy, it’s too bad about any potential damage.

Nice right? Do what we want or your car gets trashed basically.

Out comes the dog, a male German Shepard, who don’t give two shits about my car. And anybody with a brain could tell he was just happy to get some fresh air and chase some squirrels.

So of course the LEO says the dog likes my car, and now comes the fun.

They didn’t give two shits about the guns, they just wanted to search for narcotics.

I complain about the TSA’s abuse of the 4th Amendment, but they’re hardly the first ones on the scene, the “War on Drugs” scuttled our right to not be searched without probable cause.

Po-Po decided that Cemetery must be smuggling drugs…or they have a quote to meet and Cemetery’s number was up, hook-or-by-crook.

He’s as upstanding as the next guy, but the cops say “The Dog Likes Your Car”. I suspect the dog likes and dislikes any car they see fit.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: There would be a world of problems if you could buy heroin at the local drug store with no more hassle than buying a pack of smokes, or a bottle of booze…but I don’t think it would be worse than the problems caused by the “War on Drugs”.

“Gun Death” Gun Free Schools

Now thankfully nobody died here, but I think you’ll agree they were lucky.

A 15-year-old Washington girl accused of stabbing two female classmates has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and second-degree assault.

The girl charged Wednesday is being held on $1 million bail. According to court papers, she told investigators that she packed two knives from home in her backpack, planning to stab someone at Snohomish High School. Police believe she chose the victims at random. They were attacked Monday in a restroom.

This is a target-rich one. First its in a public high-school, likely with a “Zero Tolerance” rule for knives and other weapons, and of course even staff or family with carry permits can’t bring guns in there.

She attacked them in a restroom, in what sounds like an ambush attack. Also it appears there was no grievance between this girl and her victims. They just walked into the toilet when she was fixing to stab somebody.

Sounds like the girl’s injuries are pretty serious, and they’re lucky to be alive.

Hey but she didn’t use a gun, so that’s good right?

Disband The TSA

…or just wait for them to all die of cancer.

U.S. Government Glossed Over Cancer Concerns As It Rolled Out Airport X-Ray Scanners…One after another, the experts convened by the Food and Drug Administration raised questions about the machine because it violated a longstanding principle in radiation safety — that humans shouldn’t be X-rayed unless there is a medical benefit…“Even though it’s a very small risk, when you expose that number of people, there’s a potential for some of them to get cancer,” said Kathleen Kaufman, the former radiation management director in Los Angeles County, who brought the prison X-rays to the FDA panel’s attention.

I will not step into one of those scanners. They are there to protect the Gate-Rapists from the discomfort of touching my penis. They have not, nor will they ever catch any terrorists or any domestic dangers. And they pose a cancer risk.

Still I suspect them standing around the machines day-in-and-day-out are in the greatest risk group there is.

…I can’t say they don’t deserve it either. They know what the 4th Amendment is, and if they haven’t read the arguments about them violating it its because they chose not to.

If they aren’t aware that their agency has accomplished nothing its because they aren’t interested in what their agency is accomplishing.

If they’re sexually assaulting innocent people under the false premise of safety just for the paycheck…let them use the check to pay for a coffin or an urn.

You have no sympathy from me.

This is More Like It

When I talk about my work as a Federal Fisheries Observer people often Mention “Deadliest Catch” and ask if that’s what it was like.

Kinda, but not really. Turns out “Lobstermen” (not sure about its “Sequel” “Lobster Wars” is on) is on Netflix Instant Watch.

Same waters, similar boats, similar guys. Yeah this show brings back some memories. My only complaint so far is that they focus on the Lobstermen (“Bug Catchers” in the industry parlance) and not so much the daggers that I did much of my work on.

Still I’ll also note the closest time I got to being killed at sea was when a rogue wave nearly swept me off the deck of an offshore lobsterboat like this one.

The wife and I were watching this morning and she hugged me and said she was glad I wasn’t in that line of work anymore.

I really am too. Part of me still misses it, but not a big part.
